A quick second look at a couple of plays from another disappointing Spurs loss.

The much maligned hands of Jeff Ayres had no problem handling this lob from Manu Ginobili before throwing it down in a rare Spurs alley oop. Like most of Manu's passes on Tuesday night, this one's placement could have been better but it resulted in points and that's what we like to see. I sure hope Manu can tighten up his passes late in the game - those three turnovers he committed in a minute and a half late in the game made more of my hair turn grey.

Just a quick note about Ayres. He has not committed a turnover since December 15th. It's only 82 minutes on the court, but maybe catching all of those tennis balls from the training staff helped out.

My man Boris Diaw had a couple of nice scores in the paint. In the first one he catches Kris Humphries reaching and quickly goes up and knocks down a beauty of a hook.

In the second one we see Bobo fake his fellow Frenchman and fourth-quarter-stud, Kevin Seraphin, out of the picture after he had to rotate from the corner. Diaw takes it to the whole and shows great body control as he avoids Humpries, who is set to take a charge, and then puts two on the board with a pretty little finger roll.

I know we've been worried about Boris being complacent with his contract and ring, but aside from taking and missing too many threes he's putting up numbers that are almost identical to last season. He's scoring 9.1 points per game just like last season and his rebounds and assists are both up . 5 per. What is strange is that he's struggling from 0-3 feet and from deep while shooting significantly better from midrange.

We'll end this quick edition with a little Tim Duncan. Cory Joseph draws a double team, finds Duncan at the elbow and the big fella beats pretty good D from Gortat with a righty hook. The Spurs need to find Timmy a little more help out there. Kawhi can't come back soon enough.

I haven't really been worried about the Spurs this season, but I really expected a win at Washington. Hopefully the good guys steady the ship and pull out a win in Charlotte tonight. That would make it five wins in the last seven games and that's good, right?

Spurs waste great ballhandling in loss to Wizards

The Spurs dominated the ball control battle but couldn't put the ball in the hoop from point blank or stop the Wizards from hitting their looks as they once again failed to preserve any kind of momentum.

This is... frustrating. The Spurs seem incapable right now of playing a complete game the past 8 weeks unless they're playing one of the absolute dregs of the league (*cough* Timberwolves). They haven't really managed to get blown out at all either. All of their losses seem to be of the blown-in-the-final-seconds or fell-apart-in-final-minutes variety. I really hope that part of this is opponents' really keying in on the reigning champs when they might otherwise dial it in. Who knows.

The Spurs lost 3 of the four factors, but the only one that really mattered was shooting. When you shoot 8 percentage points lower eFG% than your opponent, the only way you win is if you absolutely dominate both the boards and ball control. The Spurs managed one of the two, and despite the brilliant ballhandling performance, the Spurs lost ground on the boards and couldn't overcome their inept shooting. Man, it is really a shame to waste a BCI of 4.14 on a game in which you shot 43.3% from 2.

The Wizards only took 12 3s but sank 6 of them, while the Spurs took 17 more attempts and managed only 3 more than the Wizards. That's 9 points on those 17 extra shots. Womp womp.

The Wizards sure seemed to hit every mid-range jumpshot they took last night, and it looks like that was exactly the case:

That's an awful lot of green in areas you don't usually expect to see it. The Spurs did a great job contesting close to the basket, but John Wall and crew hit floater after floater and lots of mid-range stuff which the Spurs were not quick enough to contest. And when they did contest, the Wizards scored anyway. Pretty frustrating to see your opponent take those kinds of shots and beat you with them. The other main source of points for the Wizards was the charity stripe, where they went an outrageous 21/24. Yikes.

The Spurs' shot chart looked like this: (Warning: NSFW)

Okay, so parts of that aren't bad. For instance, 6/14 from the right wing! (Bizarrely enough, 0/5 from the left wing) But what's really awful is the Spurs' anemic 43.6% from short range. Lots of missed layups, including more than one from Duncan who made up for his hot start by missing eleventy billion attempts in the second half.

Tiago Splitter went for 10 and 3 and... led the Spurs in adjGS? That right there tells you things didn't go well. To be fair though, the Spurs had a very balanced attack with 6 players in double digit GS. Splitter and Ayres were the only players to shoot over 50% from the field (although Mills and Diaw were both a solid 4-8).

Tony Parker looked good at times, but was extremely inefficient, scoring just 14 points on 18 shots. That really hurts to have so many possessions wasted like that when the shots aren't falling for you. He also was a net minus in the ball control battle with his 2 assists mitigated by 2 turnovers.

Speaking of turnovers, all 7 (only 7!) of the Spurs' TOs were committed by the Big Three. Make of that what you will. Manu Ginobili erasing basically every good play he made by pitching in 4 TOs of his own (not to mention 2-8 shooting).

Jeff Ayres once again looked fantastic out there, putting up 13.1 adjGS in his 18 minutes for a team-high 0.74 adjGS/minute (I'm throwing out Kyle Anderson's 300 OffRtg and 200 DefRtg in his 1 minute of play). And he went yet another game without a turnover! In fact, you'd have to go all the way back to December 16 to see Jeff Ayres commit a turnover in a game. That's encouraging, to say the least. When Ayres is catching passes and playing serviceable defense he is a very useful player, providing real value by spelling the other bigs or providing energy/monster dunks off the bench.

I guess another positive from last night is that Duncan and Ginobili were both pretty limited in their minutes. Which might be key in tonight's matchup vs the lowly <strike>Bobcats</strike> Hornets of Charlotte.

Perfectly average Defensive Rebounding by last year's standards, so that was good, although I admit the defensive rebounding went from excellent to deplorable in some key stretches, which was disappointing... But bad shooting and poor defense overall is what doomed the Spurs.

This statistic adjusts for the fact that a 3-point field goal is worth one more point than a 2-point field goal. For example, suppose Player A goes 4 for 10 with 2 threes, while Player B goes 5 for 10 with 0 threes.
Floor%: Via Basketball-Reference.com: Floor % answers the question, "when Player X uses a possession, what is the probability that his team scores at least 1 point?". The higher the Floor%, the more frequently the team probably scores when the given player is involved.

Spurs Index: The Spurs Index © is a just-for-fun formula that attempts to quantify just how "Spursy" a particular game is, based off averages for the 2013-2014 regular season. A perfectly average game would have a Spurs Index of 100. The formula consists of four factors which the Spurs are known for and lead or nearly lead the league in: Shooting (effective Field Goal %), Passing (Assist percentage), Defensive Rebounding Rate, and Defensive Rating. These metrics are weighted as follows:

Factor

Weight

Average

Passing (AST%)

30%

62.1%

Shooting (eFG%)

20%

53.7%

Defensive Rebounding (DReb%)

20%

76.4%

Defense (DefRtg)

20%

100.1

Opponent % of FGA Uncontested

10%

40.8%

The values for each metric are determined based on how a particular game's performance compares to the Spurs 2013-2014 regular season average for that metric. For instance, the average effective Field Goal percentage for 2013-2014 was 53.7%. So if the Spurs shot 60% in a given game, the score for eFG% would be calculated by: (0.6 / 0.537) * 20, which would yield a "score" for that factor of 22.3.

Spurs struggle late, lose to Wizards 101-93

The Spurs did a fantastic job of keeping the game close despite not playing as well as they are capable of but their continued problems in the clutch prevented them from pulling off a valuable road win.

Symmetry defined the first half, at least at the team level. The Wizards made their run against the Spurs' bench, as San Antonio's subs checked in earlier than Washington's. Then in the second quarter, the Spurs made their push while the Wizards' starters rested. A hot shooting first quarter by the home team was answered by long range makes in the second period by the visitors. Everything balanced out, with a high-scoring stretch being followed by a hard time putting points on the board.

The reason why Washington was ahead at the break and in relative control of the game while the Spurs had to keep up was due to individual talent. The Wizards were bigger and more athletic, with Paul Pierce taking advantage of match ups against the Spurs shooting guards and John Wall and Bradley Beal covering ground on defense with the type of help-and-recover strategy that the Thunder have used so well over the years to muck up San Antonio's execution.

The Wizards, impressive as they are, are not comparable to the peak Thunder. Some crevices emerged from time to time and the Spurs took advantage. Patty Mills nailed open threes he doesn't usually get against other teams, as Washington's guards overhelped. Pick and pop jumpers from opposing big men -- the bane of the Spurs existence for years -- were always there for the Wizards to use to halt runs. The Spurs never took the lead in the first half after the 7:51 mark in the first quarter but the Wizards couldn't really pull away, hard as they tried.

Keeping up with the theme of the night, the third quarter mirrored the first. The Wizards made a run and the Spurs had to come from behind to erase the deficit. Tiago Splitter and Tony Parker combined for 14 to neutralized the attack from Wall and Bradley Beal. The Spurs controlled the paint but Washington had easy buckets on the break to keep San Antonio at bay. The same three-point lead that existed after the second quarter was there going into the final period.

Normally, a close game in the fourth is a good result, especially on the road. This season, however, the Spurs are a disaster in those situations. Before Tuesday, the Spurs had only won five of 18 games in which the difference was five points with five minutes to go. Their best shot of emerging victorious would have been for the Spurs to break the pattern of the game and go on a run that would have created enough separation to allow them to withstand their usual late game struggles. That didn't happen despite them taking a small lead early, so it wasn't exactly surprising when the Wizards closed the game better and beat the Spurs after 17 straight losses.

Game notes

The Spurs used 22 lineups to the Wizard's 13. Washington has a young team with a set rotation while the Spurs are keeping tabs on minutes and have had so many injuries that they haven't been able to establish clear roles for everyone yet. Against good teams, going so deep into the rotation and throwing units out there that haven't played together enough is costly. The only thing for fans to do is trust the process and hope that when Leonard returns that will cease to be a problem.

Duncan, Parker and Ginobili combined to shoot 35 percent from the floor (14-for-40). Among the three, they took four free throws. That's not enough scoring from the team's backbone. Combined with the mistakes they all made, it's surprising the Spurs kept it close.

The reason San Antonio hung around was the play of the reserves, specially Patty Mills, Boris Diaw and Jeff Ayres. Mills was hot from outside, converting four of his six three-point attempts and playing spirited if not always effective defense. Diaw didn't shine on the boards and had trouble guarding pretty much anyone but he had one of those stretches in which he simply takes over and looks like the best player on the court. Ayres battled with the Wizards' bigs and played sold defense, filling in admirably for Aron Baynes.

San Antonio went 9-29 from beyond the arc (31 percent) and some of the looks that didn't fall were good. Danny Green went 2-for-10, which is not something that happens all that often. Had some of those outside shots gone in, the game might have ended differently. Then again, Rasual Butler did miss consecutive corner threes and he's shooting over 45 percent from there, so no excuses.

It was not a good game for Cory Joseph or Austin Daye. Joseph continues to be relentless in his drives to the basket but defensively he was not as sharp as in other games and his reluctancy to shoot from outside makes Diaw look like Antoine Walker in comparison. Daye was just not effective at all. If Belinelli and Leonard miss more games, Pop should experiment with starting Joseph in Daye's stead. The spacing will suffer but a Joseph-Green wing duo would provide better defense and shot selection than the team is getting from Daye.

This loss hurts because the Spurs keep looking to build momentum only to suffer deflating close defeats. At the same time, the Wizards are a fantastic team. John Wall is arguably a top ten player, they have shooting from the wing and they can play suffocating defense for long stretches. A win would have been fantastic but until Leonard returns and the Spurs get to play normal rotations, beating the bad teams, getting some wins at home against the good teams and competing on the road is all I can really ask for. Fortunately, there are 43 games left for the Spurs to find their best form.

Just when it looked like the Spurs were about to go on a winning run they ran into a good Washington team and came up short in crunch time.

In disappointing fashion, the Spurs dropped another winnable game in the nation's capital on the first night of a back-to-back. John Wall was unstoppable for the first two quarters and the Wizards found an unlikely fourth quarter hero in Kevin Seraphin. The two Wizards combined for 42 points on 23 shots and had separate runs where they were the best player on the floor. Seraphin also chipped in eight boards and Wall tallied eight helpers to get their team a quality win.

Like many NBA games, this one was full of runs by both teams but unfortunately for the good guys, the Wizard's 13-2 run late in the fourth gave them full control of the game and the win. Manu Ginobili helped them out with three turnovers between the 2:35 and 1:03 marks of the fourth quarter. In addition to Bad Manu, the rest of the Spurs went cold late in the game while the Wizards played aggressive defense and found enough to win.

The Spurs had a tough time shooting for most of the game and finished with a field goal percentage under 40 while the Wizards hit half of their threes and 49.3% of their shots overall. San Antonio also got beat up on the boards with the Wizards grabbing 48 to the Spurs' 34. San Antonio did take care of the ball for the most part and that kept them in the game until Manu in crunch time happened.

The good news is that the Spurs could have their full squad back by the end of the week. Getting Kawhi Leonard back will be huge for the Spurs.

Tim Duncan notched his 815th double-double with 11 and 12 in his 26 minutes. He passed Karl Malone and moved into 5th on the all-time list.

Your Spurs fall to 23-16 and remain in seventh in the West. They'll try again tomorrow night in Charlotte.

After visiting the White House in Washington D.C. on Monday, the Spurs are now set to take on the Washington Wizards. This is the second game between the 2 teams in 10 days, as the Spurs beat the Wizards in San Antonio on January 3rd. but there has been a big change since then for the Spurs: The return of Tony Parker.

In the last game versus the Wizards, Cory Joseph started at point guard in Parker's place. He had one of his best games as an NBA player, scoring 19 points on 8-10 shooting. He was able to attack the interior especially, scoring 4-5 in the painted area.

Parker's return will give the Spurs the best chance to replicate this gameplan. In the games since his return, he's been able to slice through defenses, and scoring fairly well. That penetration forces defenses to collapse down on him, creating open shots for his teammates spotting up

The Wizards will no doubt be looking for revenge in this rubber match versus the Spurs. Despite Joseph and San Antonio playing well, it was a winnable game for Washington. They just couldn't keep up with the Spurs' hot shooting, and eventually succumbed to defeat. They'll have to rotate well versus Parker's penetration, and not give the Spurs an opportunity to shoot 55% from the field again. The Spurs scored 52 points in the paint versus the Wizards in that game, a figure that is unacceptable for post defenders like Nene and Marcin Gortat. They'll definitely come to play on Tuesday.

Both teams are coming into this game pretty well rested. The Wizards had their last game on Sunday, a rough loss to the Atlanta Hawks. The Spurs have had a little more time off, with their last matchup having been on Saturday versus the Minnesota Timberwolves. Manu Ginobili is probable for the game, and Marco Belinelli is questionable. Kawhi Leonard is still out.
