San Antonio should be fine even if they're not 100% until June

A few days ago, The Hand talked to Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News about his ongoing recovery from pink eye:

"I’m still not 100 percent," Leonard said after the Spurs’ 121-92 victory in Minnesota on Friday. …

"There’s really nothing I can do about it," Leonard said. "I just have to play through it."

It's things like this for which the term "silver linings" was coined. Kawhi still isn't himself, Tiago Splitter is still out, and Patty Mills won't be back and stealing our hearts until at least Valentine's Day. And yet. The Spurs are now 9-4, having won seven of their last eight games following their 2-3 start. The team is still turning the ball over too much, but it's also not allowing teams to take advantage. The defense has been stellar, particularly against the 3, and the few close games the Spurs have been involved in have seen good execution down the stretch.

Also, the Spurs aren't really among the teams dealing with big injury problems this season. If you divided such teams by tiers, it would look something like this:

Tier 1: OKC, Indiana

Tier 2: Chicago, Washington

Tier 3: Spurs, Golden State

As of Sunday, the first tier had combined for 8 wins, the second tier 17, and the third 18. Though their injury problems are relatively minor, and though their continuity is the strongest of any team in the league, the loss of the Spurs' primary rim protector has forced team adjustments on defense. Matt Bonner and Boris Diaw have had to adapt their roles to make up for Splittler's absence in the starting lineup and Aron Baynes has had to double his one-footed reverse layup production. Cory Joseph has played heavier minutes as the #2 PG off the bench. Lastly, Leonard is beginning his transition from opportunistic scorer to the Spurs' primary perimeter weapon. Each of those changes puts stress on the system and introduces variables that mimic the addition of new players.

So their record isn't anything more or less than we should expect. After starting the season against a series of playoff contenders, the schedule has lightened considerably of late, Diaw is flashing his springtime form, Tony Parker and Bonner occasionally appear to have switched bodies, and this is happening:

To watch the team, whether it be this weekend's back-to-back or their road wins over the Clippers and Golden State, is like watching last year's team through a slightly opaque window. You see them the way Kawhi is seeing the basket right now. The execution looks familiar, but things are a bit hazy around the edges.

Ask the man charged with operating the vast machine that is the Spurs offense, and he'll tell you that, even after putting up 220 combined points on Minnesota and Brooklyn, the valves could use a bit of adjustment:

"Tonight I thought our focus was really good," Parker said. "It's not easy to get back to the level that we were at last year in the Finals, but we'll try hard. We've got a long time before the playoffs start."

The silver lining? We're barely a tenth of the way through the season. The conjunctivitis will clear, but the Spurs won't truly be 100% until they're the last team standing. Whatever may ail them between now and then, it surely won't be malaise. Last June's title answered all the questions, all except the one it could never answer. Remember how ridiculous the asterisks used to be? "The Spurs never played in a memorable Finals." "San Antonio is death to TV ratings." "Tim Duncan never even made back to back Finals appearances." Everything was answered in 2014, if not 2013. Those two series against Miami have already earned their place alongside the all-time great championship battles in NBA history, leaving us with one remaining question: Can the Spurs repeat?

They aren't waiting until they get healthy to pursue the answer. It's true the Spurs haven't dealt with the snakebites that have devastated the Thunder and the Pacers, but their own mixture of injuries to irreplaceable rotation parts combined with the hangover suffered by all defending champions would be enough to send any team into a fog to open the season. After losing to Anthony Davis and the Pelicans on November 8th, the Spurs looked they were succumbing to that fog.

"I think it's more mental than anything," Danny Green said (after the Pelicans loss.) "But I can't speak for everybody. When I talk to some of the older guys, some guys' bodies are hurting a little bit. We have some back-to-backs coming up, but we've done this before. They've been here before. I feel like we're in decent shape; still getting there. We're not in the greatest shape. We're just not in our normal team rhythm, our chemistry."

The Spurs have responded like they've been there before, with the knowledge that the only thing left to drive this team is getting to the one place they haven't been before. Only then will the Spurs truly be whole.

"It’s not like we’re the Bulls in ’93," Ginobili told the Washington Post last month, "We aren’t the best by far. We’ve got to fight it. We’ve got to work hard. Things have to go our way." It sounds like he's talking about luck, about the game breaking in your favor in ways you can't control. Injuries are obviously a crucial component of that, but as a Hall of Fame-bound 57th draft pick would know, sometimes you have to just push through the fog. Sometimes, you have to make things go your way.

After starting 2-3, the Spurs have won seven of their last eight. They controlled most of the game against the Nets on their way to a 9-4 record. Let's take a look at some of the plays that stood out in the win.

Let's start with Tony Parker. He had himself another fantastic game after he completely dominated the Wolves on Friday night. On Saturday night he dropped 22 on 50% shooting and found his teammates for seven assists. Here he is with a pretty start/stop drive against Deron Williams. The move gets Deron leaning the wrong direction and Tony attacks and finishes relatively high off the glass. Of course, it being Tony, he ends up on the ground. The floor was spaced and Brook Lopez can't fully commit to help with Duncan lurking in the paint. It's been a couple of weaker opponents, but the Spurs are starting to look like the Spurs we know they can be on the offensive side of the floor.

Check out big Tim immediately take it at Brook Lopez after receiving the ball from Marco. It's the left-handed Timmy we see as he dribbles once and covers 20 feet on his way to a gentle lefty off the glass. It's so fluid and his footwork, not that it needed to be complicated, is perfect on his drive to the rack.

Here's a rarity in the GIF Breakdown. A defensive stop. I'd love to include more, but most of the time a good defensive stand takes well over 10 seconds and the size of the GIF becomes an issue. This one starts with Brook Lopez looking for Joe Johnson cutting backdoor, but Kawhi fights back into the picture to deny the pass. Brook then swings it to Bojan Bogdonavich, but Marco makes his way through a screen to deny the deep look. From there it's "give it to Deron" and while Tony overplays the passing lane just a little, Deron gives up a decent look from just inside the charity stripe and takes it deeper into the lane where Tim Duncan is able to really bother the shot. Of course, a successful defensive stand ends with a rebound and the Big Fundamental pulls down the miss to give the Spurs a possession.

My man Boris Diaw is still working his magic in the post. During the second half he had three straight possessions in the post against Teletovic that resulted in six Spurs points but this one from the first half is the prettiest. Bobo backs Mirza down about four feet before he spins over his right shoulder and knocks down a one-footed fadeaway banker. Diaw is so dangerous on the block and that shot's just about unguardable. It's Dirkish and oh so pretty.

This is a fun one. Tony and Deron bang knees and both players hit the deck. No, that's not the fun part. Parker recovers quickly and Danny Green feeds the Frenchman on his way to the basket. Tony has Lopez one-on-one and does the thing where he makes an incredibly difficult shot look almost easy. Then he makes his way to the floor for the second time in five seconds.

The Spurs way: Good to great. Danny feeds Manu, Manu fakes the three, Danny moves to the strong side corner while Jarrett Jack loses his focus and Manu makes the easy pass to Danny for a wide open triple.

In the middle of the fourth quarter the Spurs didn't look sharp. The Nets were able to hang around against a Parker, Green, Leonard, Daye and Diaw lineup. Pop's response was to insert The Flying Argentine. Manu scored with this nice drive, made an assist and grabbed two boards in a minute and a half as the Spurs expanded their lead from eight to fifteen. I can't say it enough - Manu's a basketball wizard, we're extremely lucky, and we should cherish Gino while we can.

Tony Parker, Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green combined for 64 points and each scored over 20. When was the last time a Spurs team had three different 20-point scorers in one game?

The first half was a breeze for the Spurs. They scored efficiently and made it really, really tough on the Nets on the other end. The Nets were held to just 36 points on 33% shooting from the floor for the half while the Spurs dropped 51 with good looks and Tony Parker continuing to play at a high level. It looked like it was going to be an easy victory.

Tim Duncan had a phenomenal first half and was well on his was to a 5x5, but he only saw seven minutes in the second half and finished with 7-10-7-3-4 in his 25 minutes. Big Fun had it going early.

After that outstanding first half, the Nets made a push early in the third to make it a game. They cut their deficit to eight a couple of times before Tony took a rebound coast to coast followed by Danny hitting a triple to open it back up. Boris Diaw did some excellent work in the post against Mirza Teletovic. He scored on back-to-back possessions and then fed Duncan to get the big fella to the line.

In the fourth the Spurs' lineup of Parker, Green, Whi, Daye and Diaw was pretty bad. Not only could they not push the game out of reach, but they allowed the Nets to cut it to 10 with six and a half minutes left on an 11-6 run. That cuased a Pop timeout, but he trotted out the same lineup after talking it over. First possession out of the TO: Tony missing Daye in the corner for a turnover. Manu subbed in for Daye.

Joe Johnson cut it to eight, making it eight straight for the Nets, but Danny Green hit his fifth three of the night . The Manu substitution proved to be the right call. The Argentine was fantastic as the Spurs pushed their lead back out to 15 over the next couple of possessions. Manu pitched in a beautiful drive, an assist and two rebounds in one minute and 33 seconds. The lead returned, the Spurs flowed and they cruised for the last several minutes on their way to their seventh win in eight games.

Stay tuned for Michael Erler's more in-depth recap which will be out soon.

Your Spurs improve to 9-4.

In their Words:

Tony on "being fresh tonight"

Pop managed our minutes pretty well [against the Wolves] so I agree, we were kind of fresh for this game. I thought we started out well, played great defense and kept our lead the whole way.

Tony on his three-point shooting:

I had a good start against Dallas, and I'm building on that. Before the season I tried to find some motivation and goals with [Chip Engelland]. It was like, let's try to do 50-40-80. I never did that. I've shot over 50% a lot in my career and I was at 37% three-point last year so I barely missed it. So I tried to make that a goal this year. When you win a lot you have to stay motivated. I always want to perfect my shot.

On the ball movement:

It was good tonight. We started last night, last night was great, too. Tonight I thought our focus was really good. It's not easy to get back to the level we were at in the Finals, but we'll try hard and we have a long time before the playoffs start.

Up Next:

The Spurs get three full days off before they take on the Indiana Pacers in San Antonio on Wednesday. That'll be a 7:35 tip. Who knows, maybe Tiago Splitter will make his return.

After a dominating win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, the San Antonio Spurs get set to take on the Brooklyn Nets in a SEGABABA for both teams.

The Spurs seemed to finally get over their shooting woes versus Minnesota, shooting 54.8% from the field and a scorching 61.9% from 3. They'll look to turn that spark into a hot streak against a Brooklyn team that allows over 100 points per game.

This is a SEGBABA, so there's no telling what the Spurs' lineup will look like. Regardless of who plays, it is almost certain that their team defense will be great. They're first in the league in scoring defense, allowing just 91.6 points per contest. Even when guys like Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard sit, the Spurs work well enough as a unit to make things extremely difficult for the opposition.

As said before, this is a SEGABABA for the Nets as well. Last night they squeaked out a victory versus a struggling Oklahoma City team. Jarrett Jack was the hero of this game, scoring 23 on 8-15 from the field, and adding 5 assists.

In a game versus Brooklyn, you know guys like Deron WIlliams, seven-time All-Star Joe Johnson, and Brook Lopez are going to pull some weight. The player to keep an eye on this year is rookie Bojan Bogandovic.

Drafted in the secnd round out of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2011, Bogandovic stayed in Europe before signing a multi-year deal with the Nets prior to this season. He has started every game for Brooklyn this year and has not disappointed. In about 32 minutes per game, Bogandovic is averaging 11.3 points per game on 47% from the field and is shooting a more than respectable 37.3% from long-distance. He's a bit one-dimensional right now, and could be exploited on defense, but his scoring talents will have to be monitored.
