It seems that I forgot to include a play in the last GIFBD. First suggested to be included by liquidpaper and seconded by JRW, this play can now be relived forever.

Bili MiNelli hasn't had much time on the court together lately with Manu missing a couple of weeks. It's great to have them all back together because they produce some of the best chemistry-ball in the game. Add Boris Diaw to that mix and that's an incredible second unit. Timmy makes the outlet pass to Boris on this play and Boris pushes it to Mills. A pass back to Marco at the wing leads to an open Manu triple. Beautiful stuff.

The Spurs had a rough first half on Friday night versus the Bobcats, but they finished strong and got a good home win as we enter March and the wind-up to the second season. As usual, we'll take a look at some plays that might not have made Sportscenter (and I mean, there is no room for any more coverage of the Spurs, as Manu's shoe-out is getting all of the attention as the NOT Top-10 number 1,) but are definitely worth looking at a third or fourth time.

15th pick Kawhi Leonard abuses number two pick Michael Kidd-Gilchrist in the post on this play. Our man Whi tosses the ball to Tim Duncan and reestablishes himself with better position in the right block. Timmy returns the ball to Leonard who takes one dribble to back up MKG just a little bit more. Then a turnaround, fade-away jumper that is just otstanding. I know the league is going away from the inefficient post-up and moving towards a ton of threes (where 1-of-3 is as good as 1-of-2 inside,) but I am giddy at the thought that Kawhi can do this reliably. I mean that's a pretty unguardable shot, and I miss watching guys work in the post. More of this, please.

This play has loads of good stuff in it. It starts with Patty Mills passing the ball to the trailing Duncan, who swings it over to Manu Ginobili in the right wing. After Patty passes to Tim he kind of saunters towards the lane, faking an off-ball screen that could have freed Marco before making a cut under the basket. The Manu makes a routine great pass to Mills, who gets two off the glass. This team is so easy to root for.

In this play we see Timmy set a high screen for Patty. The Aussie drives and kicks to Boris, who spots the GOATPUFF in excellent position down low. The still elite veteran gives a quick fake to move Big Al Jefferson and then drops a hook through the hoop. Timmy Tim Tim Tim. Tim.

This is a great dribble drive floater from Mills, and I'm pretty sure that Patty still has the passport that Tony gave him in his possession, and maybe some fois gras. The little dude brings it every night, and gets an and-one on this play. Good side-five from Gino, fundamentally sound fist pump from Timmeh, and a couple of nice claps from Beli and Bobo. Good work, team.

Marco Belinelli is such a sneaky fella. He tosses up a brick and the ball finds it's way into Tim's hands via Boris Diaw. Marco has opened, gone through, and shut the backdoor before anyone on the Robertcats can check him under the basket. Tim's one of the better passing big men in the league, but this bounce-pass is not his finest work (it is a pretty tricky pass through traffic to a moving target though), and Beli fumbles the low pass before displaying amazine court awareness. He jumps with his back to the basket as soon as he gets the handle and gets a well-contested layup off the glass to go. The more I watch this, the more amazed I am that The Spicy One got this to go. I'm with Fred, this team is definitely better than last years when healthy.

Again with the Belinelli. Here he uses a high screen from Tiago to weave his way through a couple defenders. A slight hesitation and two big steps before the Italian gets a pretty floater to go. Manu in Training indeed. I can't believe how great Marco has been for the Spurs this season. Steal, brillian, another great pickup, PATFO, etc.

Fred also mentioned Patty in his recap, and noted that Patty is a different player than he was last year. I think we can all agree with that. Here he is running a give-and-go with big, bad Boris. Mills loses Kemba Walker, who runs into Diaw set up to take a charge - I'm not too sure how often Diaw is going to draw an offensive foul call on a guy who weighs 100 pounds less than him. It's a good thing the refs let it go or the Spurs would have actually had to work to get two points.

Let's end this with one from Manu Ginobili. Manu and Timmy run a two man game that leads to Manu curling into the lane, going left, and finishing with a one-handed lefty runner. Perhaps in the next edition we can include Mr. Parker.

The Spurs shook off a terrible first half to beat Gary Neal's new gang, and in the process, they secure their 17th consecutive winning season.

"This was real basketball... [I'm] happy to be in a situation to play in games like this, not doing whatever it is Milwaukee is attempting to do."

- Gary Neal, via Dan McCarney

Sometimes, all it takes is a change of scenery.

When Gary Neal was signed by the Milwaukee Bucks in the off-season, most observers acknowledged that it was a strange fit. The Bucks had a glut of guards, a coaching change, and no clear direction for their roster. It was a confusing move for the team, but Gary Neal had worked hard and played well for the Spurs. Regardless of how odd the situation might have been, Neal earned his payday. Fresh off a great Finals performance, his shooting is a valuable commodity for any team, even one that had no legitimate competitive aspirations.

But as many players in this league learn, paydays only go so far. For a player who was leaving one of the best teams in the league and an organization that excels in player development, Gary Neal must have felt like the butt of a very cruel joke as he struggled to see daylight in Larry Drew's circus. Neal, who had been a quiet, focused player on the Spurs became a vocal critic on the Bucks, even going so far as to lash out at Bucks Center Larry Sanders.

So it must have felt like a release from prison when the trade deadline arrived and he found himself in a Bobcats jersey. Charlotte is not a contender by any means, but the team plays hard and has been coached well by newcomer Steve Clifford. And unlike the Bucks, the Bobcats are a playoff caliber team that is capable of hanging with any team in the NBA.

Friday night was a perfect example of that. The Spurs looked a step slow as the Bobcats' tenacious defense blitzed them in the first half. They cut off passing lanes, fought for boards, and contested just about every shot the Spurs tossed up. As expected, they did struggle to find a spark on the other end, but Gary Neal did an admirable job infusing the Bobcats' lineups with some offensive firepower, finishing with fifteen points.

But the Spurs are enjoying a change of scenery of their own. After beating the Pistons on Wednesday, the Spurs are beginning to find their late-game groove after returning home from the Rodeo Road Trip for the final push towards the playoffs. They seemed out of sorts against the Bobcats' attack, but by the third quarter, the Spurs had the Cats on their heels. And though Charlotte tied the game late in the fourth quarter, the Spurs found their footing in the game's final minutes, burying the Bobcats under a volley of efficient shots and lockdown defensive stops.

The last four minutes of the contest were enough to make up for the awful first half, as each of the players on the floor taking turns hitting big shots to put the game away. Sure, the final score brought back memories of the old, "boring" Spurs, as both teams struggled to reach the 90-point mark, but in the end, this kind of grind it out win was the perfect way for the team to grab win number 42. When the buzzer sounded, the Spurs could rest assured that this season would be just like the sixteen before it: hard-fought, and a well executed success.

Tim Duncan started the game looking generally out of sorts as he missed his first five field goal attempts, and it looked like he was going to be in for a long night. Then he made six of his next seven shots and finished with 17 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists. You could fill the Edwards Aquifer with all the dumbfounded shrugs that greet a 37-year-old who consistently puts up performances like this. You could power the Riverwalk for a week with all the headshaking from fans and opponents alike who can't quite grasp what they're seeing. At this point, there isn't any hyperbole available to adequately describe what is happening. It's quiet, calculated, brutal consistency. Remember when the season started and it looked like Tim Duncan had forgotten how to shoot? Yeah, me neither. The machine just keeps on humming.

There was at least a 30% chance Gary Neal was going to end up in this spot. (Admit it. You were expecting to see him here.) But Neal had a really good game, hustled like crazy, and was clearly relieved to be on a team that's going somewhere. Unfortunately, the leader of that team had a terrible game. Fresh off an Eastern Conference Player of the Week award (Why is this a thing?), Kemba Walker couldn't continue his strong play against the Spurs' defense and posted one of the worst shooting nights of his season. He never seemed to find the flow of the game, and he was unable to provide his team with some scoring punch when it needed it down the stretch. The Bobcats play Oklahoma City, Miami, and Indiana in the next five days. There's a pretty good chance that Player of the Week award feels like a participation ribbon this time next week.

ODDS AND ENDS

During the first half, I was positive this game was going to be a snoozer, so I turned on Photoshop and made something for my mom's fridge.

Tonight likely offered the last sighting this season of the camouflage alternate uniforms. Even if you kind of liked them, you're probably happy about that.

It feels weird to say, but Gary Neal is a really good fit on this Bobcats team. His role is limited enough for him to be effective when he's on the floor, and he's clearly excited about playing for a team that has aspirations beyond the draft. Good for him.

Apparently, Tim Duncan decided to hold his postgame presser at Cory Joseph's locker. Spurs writers were all over it, but 48 Minutes of Hell's Andrew McNeill got the best photo, perfectly capturing Joseph's confusion and helplessness. It's practically existential.

All signs point to Tony Parker returning Sunday night. If Parker does play, it will be the first time the Spurs have fielded a complete roster for a full game since January 2nd. Yes. You read that correctly. JANUARY 2ND. Get your #fullsquad posters ready.

BY THE NUMBERS

12: Tim Duncan's rank in the NBA's all-time rebounding list. He passed Hakeem Olajuwon during the game and needs 17 to pass the eleventh ranked player, Wes Unseld.

17: Number of consecutive winning seasons the Spurs have notched. That's a crazy level of consistent excellence, but they'll need three more seasons above .500 to beat the Utah Jazz's record 19.

19: Spurs turnovers in the game, 4.5 more than their season average.

0: Number of free throws the Spurs missed (15/15). I know. I'm just as confused as you are.

4: Number of three pointers Josh McRoberts attempted, of which he hit none. I confess I haven't seen the Bobcats play much this season, so the sight of McRoberts, Three-Point Specialist was foreign and jarring to me. But the guy averages 3.6 three-point attempts a game and hits 1.4 of them for a respectable 38.7% three-point shooting average. The weirdest part is that last year he only attempted one a game and posted an abysmal 24% average from behind the arc. What gives? Charlotte is a strange place, you guys.

THE GAME IN SONG

GOING FORWARD, THE SPURS NEED TO...

Find their groove. With the season's final stretch ahead of them and (hopefully, finally) a completely healthy roster, this shouldn't be a problem. The Spurs kept their heads above water through a brutal rash of injuries, but the schedule doesn't afford them much room to exhale, especially with only 1 1/2 games between them and the first-place Oklahoma City Thunder. Sunday's game is against the Mavericks, who the Spurs would face in the opening round if the playoffs started today.

In honor of Military Appreciation Night, let's take a look behind enemy lines. The Spurs took no prisoners in the 4th Quarter and we even found Gary Neal.

Here are your official Opponent Game Thread comments. For those unfamiliar, we will be taking a look at what the opposing fans are saying during their game threads. In this case, you can find it here at the SB Nation Blog - Rufus On Fire.

This game turned out to be a second homecoming for Gary Neal -- since he played as a visitor earlier this season when the Bucks came to town -- but it also served as Neal's introduction to the Bobcat fans as it was his first game in a Charlotte uniform. Fair warning: there is a lot of Neal love in this one. This may have been just another game for the Spurs, but theBobcats are in full playoff mode. Sitting in the 7th seed in the East, and under .500, they can ill afford to lose ground on the competition. You'll get a sense of it, once their fans started sensing the inevitable. Mixed in all that, you see their normal dislike for our hero Manu Ginobili and somenew-found fear of a guy named Patty Mills. That said, they do have an Australian fan in that group, so he wasn't completely hated. So, let's dive into it.

It took a while, but the Spurs were eventually able to shut the door on the Bobcats and send them home with a loss. Here are your game links for Friday's matchup against Charlotte.

Game Flow | Shot Chart

When asked about the team's slow start over the past couple games, Manu Ginobili replied, "it felt like we had to be in trouble to react. Against some teams, you won't be able to come back."

In discussing his team's 19 turnovers, Pop admitted they had a problem, saying, "Taking care of the ball has been a bugaboo for a while now." Go ahead and watch the interview if only to hear Pop say the word "bugaboo."

In his post-game interview, Tim Duncan talked about the Spurs grinding out another win by coming from behind, but it was Cory Joseph who silently stole the show by standing alongside the media because the interview was being held right in front of his locker.

Dan McCarney summed up the game by comparing it to a slugfest we might have seen from the Spurs in the early 00s.

Raul Dominguez of the Associated Press noted how the Spurs looked comfortable down the stretch, even though Popovich considered the game "hard to watch."

Derek James, over at Rufus on Fire, wrote that despite the Spurs' slow start, he knew that they were eventually going to "get it going."

Report Cards – Trevor Zickgraf of 48 Minutes of Hell hands out player grades, and gave out quite a few "A's".

In the game, Duncan passed Hakeem Olajuwon for 12th all-time in NBA career rebounds. Just for fun, here are stat lines for the 10 games in which Duncan played against Olajuwon in the late 90's to early 2000's. Duncan went 10-0 in those matchups.

In case you missed it, Friday night was Military Appreciation Night at the AT&T Center and there was a nice tribute to Medal of Honor recipients at the game.

In non-Spurs or Bobcats news, the Pelicans' Tyreke Evans almost didn't make it to Friday's game against the Suns because he got stuck in an elevator. Cue the M. Night Shyamalan jokes!

Next up for the Spurs will be the Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday night.

The San Antonio Spurs erased an early 14-point deficit to beat the Charlotte Bobcats, 92-82.

Friday night, the San Antonio Spurs battled the Charlotte Bobcats at the AT&T Center. The Bobcats came into the Alamo City playing good basketball and were hoping for their fifth straight win. Charlotte entered tonight with five full days of rest and it was evident early on as their tenacious defense and fresh legs flustered San Antonio. The Spurs, however, regrouped just before halftime and eventually managed to put the feisty Bobcats away, 92-82.

It's been more than a month since I last recapped a game, due to the long Rodeo Road Trip, so let me begin by expressing my supreme confidence in this team. Many pundits across the nation essentially ignored the Spurs' injuries and decided that this team is somehow just not that capable. They've been pitching the Durant vs. Lebron angle so often that it seems they've actually began to believe the hype that they created. "Number one vs. number two." "OKC has two of the best ten players in the league." "Lebron or Durant for MVP?" Yadda yadda yadda, nothing else matters.

My intention is not to take anything away from OKC or Miami, but if all you did was listen to ESPN you'd probably think that they're playing Game 7 of the finals tomorrow. I just listened to their halftime show with Bill Simmons and Doug Collins. ESPN showed the Western Conference standings and the two were asked how they saw the West ending up. They didn't mention the Spurs. Not once. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but it's driving me a little nuts. The team that should have won the championship last year greatly improved and somehow they are an afterthought.

This season is shaping up as well as it could have for the Spurs. As a Spurs fan, you couldn't ask for a better season, in terms of building a team to win it all. If I had the power to go back in time and change anything that's happened this season, I wouldn't. Not a single thing. The injuries to Kawhi, Manu, Danny, Tiago and Tony happened at the perfect time. If they had happened just as the season began, there would've been too much season left and odds are some of them would have tweaked something again. If they occurred any later in the season, there would not be enough time for them to get in rhythm for the playoffs.

The perfectly timed injuries allowed Boris Diaw, Marco Belinelli and Patty Mills to take on bigger roles. The way I look at it is that the Spurs are vastly superior to last year's team because these three players, as they are currently playing, are all new to the team. Diaw never looked for his shot last year. The present version not only takes open shots, but he also effectively posts up multiple times a game. Chubby Patty never got off the bench last year and now he's capable of scoring 30 and has morphed into Pesky Patty on the defensive end of the floor. And the upgrade from Gary Neal to Marco Belinelli was on full display tonight. Marco is a complete player and Gary is a gunner. Marco ran the offense tonight while Gary took (bad) shots on the other end. This version of the Spurs is the best we've had since 2005. While OKC is scary, by the time the Western Conference Finals takes place, I believe the Spurs will be the favorites. This will happen after Simmons incorrectly picks the Spurs to lose in each of the first two rounds, again.

Tonight, the Spurs struggled mightily in the first quarter and never led in the second. In the first, the Spurs shot 32% from the field and didn't connect on a 3-pointer. In addition, they committed six turnovers and so they found themselves trailing by nine after one. Keep in mind that half of the Spurs' players are rusty and the lineups that Pop is using haven't played together in months due to the litany of injuries.

In the second quarter, the Spurs continued to look out of rhythm and the Bobcats pushed their lead to 14 points with 8:26 remaining in the quarter. While that was the Bobcats biggest lead of the game, they controlled most of the second quarter leading by double digits. However, after Al Jefferson's layup with 1:59 on the clock, the Spurs' defense tightened and didn't allow the Bobcats to score another point in the half. The Spurs closed with a 5-0 run and trailed by just four at intermission.

Even without Tony Parker, I am getting that strange confidence yet again. I had the same premonition throughout last season and when I felt it, I'd often text JR Wilco, "Championship!" After watching the Spurs play a fairly miserable 22 minutes of basketball, I was not concerned in the slightest. The Bobcats are a very good defensive team. They have incredible athleticism and use it well. Against most teams, the Bobcats' first half effort would have been enough to suck the life out of their opponent. But not against this team. I knew the run was going to happen and sure enough, the Spurs quit turning it over and suddenly they were right back in it.

In the third, the Spurs finally managed to get over the hump behind a great quarter by Tim Duncan. He scored nine points on three of three shooting from the field and hitting three of three from the line. He also snared five boards and dished two dimes. However, the Bobcats refused to go away. Down seven points with two minutes to go in the quarter and with the game slipping away, they clawed their way back in and only trailed by one after three.

In the fourth quarter, the Spurs confidently closed the game. Patty, Marco, Manu, Kawhi, Diaw and Tim all made important plays on both ends of the floor. Marco was red hot scoring nine points while not missing a shot in the final frame. Pesky Patty forced a turnover after a Spurs made field goal with his relentless one-man full-court press. Manu hit an acrobatic and-one that essentially put the game away.

This team is so good. The Spurs were without Tony Parker. They were obviously rusty and turned the ball over 19 times. They were facing a hot, extremely athletic Bobcats team that was as rested as possible. None of it mattered as the Spurs executed in the fourth to win comfortably. The chemistry of this team is off the charts. I wish there was an accurate way to quantify it. If there was, I bet this team would be top five in NBA history. Get ready for the ride; it's going to be fantastic.

The good guys win their second in a row and four out of five as they improve to 42-16 for the season.

That first quarter was rough. The Spurs could get nothing going and even less to drop through the net. They fell behind 14-25 going into the second.

The second quarter was much better for the Spurs and they cut the lead to four at halftime, despite a slew of turnovers. The good guys held the Bobcats fg% in the 30s all game, but couldn't find any separation until they were up eight with half a minute left in the game. San Antonio found help from Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili late, as well as receiving a timely meatball from Marco.

It wasn't a pretty game, but the good guys took care of the ball late, and their excellence at closing games out was crucial in this late February win. Plus, those two, late Danny Green free-throws gave a win to anyone who placed a wager on the Spurs vs. tonight's spread.

A quick Final Score tonight after a good win, because it's Friday night, and there are things to do!

We weren't lucky enough to see OKC lose to the Grizz. Still, your Spurs are down just a game in the loss column to the Thunder, and Tony is expected back for the game against Dallas on Sunday! Possibly a full-squad reunion for that one, which would be just great.

One last note before I get out of here:

Tim passed the great Hakeem Olajuwon on the all-time rebound list tonight. Tim is alone in 12th spot, and should catch and pass Wes Unseld in the next couple of games for 11th. I know the GOATPUFF doesn't care about stats, but that's pretty cool, and that's the Final Score.

Oh, I almost forgot. Since we missed out on Granger, it looks like 29% of you Pounders would like to see Robert Horry picked up for the 15th spot, though Fred Silva and Meta, Whirled Peas were in second with 17% of the vote each. My boy Stak5 came up with just 11% of the vote--wake up Pounders.
