A quick breakdown of some plays that stood out during Friday's Spurs-Magic game.

You may have heard that the Spurs went the entire 2012-2013 regular season and only tallied a single alley-oop, per NBA.com. Well, tonight they doubled their output from last season.

In the first one we see Manu Ginobili and Jeff Ayres run a high pick and roll. E'Twaun Moore honors Manu's shooting ability and goes over the screen which forces Nikola Vucevic to pick up the driving Manu. With Matt Bonner, Patty Mills, and Marco Belinelli threatening from the 3-point line, Orlando's defense is forced to quickly Choose it's own <strike>Adventure</strike> method of execution and decides to deny the open three, leaving the rolling Ayres a clear path to grab the Ginobili lob and throw it down.

In the second one we find the Spurs in transition. The 37-year-old Tim Duncan beats everyone down the floor, again, and the big man is rewarded with Marco Belinelli's superb lob. During the postgame coverage, Ginobili remarked that completing an alley-oop to Tim has a low rate of success, because with Tim, you only have a millisecond to time it while he is in the air. This sequence seems to back that up. Manu went on to say that he wants to get Matt Bonner an alley-oop. If the Red Mamba ever throws one down, the resulting GIF may break the internet.

In this next GIF we see Tim get fouled as he makes a strong move to the basket. Not only does he get an incredible bounce for the and-1, but there appears to be an invisible force pulling players on the right baseline toward the ceiling. The GOAT PUFF seems to get up off the ground as quickly as any time in his career, but notice Aaron Afflalo's shoulders. They appear to be yanked upward as if he were a marionette just as Tim is getting to his feet.

This is just classic. The Spurs run 4-Down and Tim gives us one more banker to add to the 1.2 million we've already had the pleasure of watching. I don't care how many times I've seen it, this always makes me smile. I'm going to miss it when it's gone, and to the best of my knowledge there isn't a big that likes to get the ball that far out in the post, and it will probably a long while, if ever, before there's a big that wants it that far out, and is looking to put it off the glass. This is pure Duncan. Soak it in.

Lastly, we'll feature a recent addition to the team. Marco Belinelli has found a home in the worldly Spurs locker room. Italian Ice has found his place on the team, and is enjoying his best season thus far. He is shooting 50% from the field, 55% from distance, his rebounding is at an all-time career high, his assists are at a career high per 36 minutes, and his win shares per 48 minutes are 270% higher than his career average. In a case of one hand washing the other, Beli is knocking down most of the open looks the system is providing him with. In recognition of his outstanding night, here are all of his makes against the Magic - where he went 6-for-8 from the field and 4-for-4 from long range.

There you have it, Pounders. With last night's win your Spurs are 14-2.

With big contributions from Tim Duncan and Marco Belinelli, the Spurs defeated the Magic in Orlando.

The story coming into tonight's game was the absence of Tony Parker who was out with a "sprained ankle." The Spurs had not rested anyone on a BABA yet, but with Parker leading the team in minutes and the Magic missing their own starting point guard, it made sense for Pop to give his star the night off.

Cory Joseph got the nod to start and not Mills, as Popovich probably wanted to keep the bench rotation intact. My biggest concern with Joseph filling in for Parker was how big the drop off in offensive efficiency was going to be. To my surprise, there was virtually none, at least when it came to putting up points on the board. The Spurs struggled with turnovers, but Tim Duncan started out on fire hitting all the shots that were rimming out earlier in the season while Kawhi Leonard contributed six first quarter points of his own. The defense, on the other hand, was not up to par. The Spurs allowed a team that was ranked 18th in offensive rating coming into the game to score 22 points in the first 7:30 of the first quarter.

Fortunately, the bench came to the rescue as it has consistently this season, going on a 13-2 run to close the first quarter up, 29-24. It seemed the onslaught was bound to continue in the second quarter but the Magic subs, with Andrew Nicholson leading the way, found enough scoring to keep the game close and they hoped to finish the half with a manageable deficit. That all changed around the six minute mark, when a couple of Marco Belinelli triples seemed to energize the up until that point apathetic Spurs.

Duncan continued to dominate on offense while Kawhi Leonard wrecked havoc on defense, creating points off turnovers. After sleep-walking through the start of the game, the whole team looked engaged and that new found focus resulted on another big run, this time 22-5. By halftime, the score was 63-45 and it seemed the Spurs were on their way to crush another over-matched opponent early, like we've seen them do countless times over the past few seasons.

But The JV has his guys competing. They refused to go away quietly and took advantage of the Spurs' starting lineup beginning the second half as sluggishly as they did the game. The great start from Duncan had the negative side effect of turning the offense too post-centric, which slowed down the pace and curbed the ball movement. Without doing anything particularly well, the Magic started to chip away at the lead, until the Spurs' bench once again stopped the bleeding.

Ginobili turned back the clock all the way to 2010 and carved up the Magic's interior defense out of spread pick-and-rolls sets, finishing at the rim or finding Jeff Ayres rolling to the basket. It seemed that was going to be the game's breaking point, but the same turnover problems that plagued the Spurs in the first half reappeared and the Magic, with Oladipo carrying their offense, kept it within reach going into the final quarter only down 11, 81-70.

There's always inherent danger in allowing an inferior team to stay in the game, as a couple of timely buckets could turn a potentially easy win into a costly loss. Fortunately, the Spurs remembered they are playing a SEGABABA tomorrow against the Rockets and came out determined to end the game once and for all. After withstanding two big runs, the over matched Magic finally succumbed to the Spurs' third assault and the 12-0 run to start the quarter was the last nail in the coffin. Despite not playing particularly well, the Spurs escaped with the W and didn't have to play anyone more than 25 minutes to do it. That's all that matters in November.

Observations

Cory Joseph was his usual reliable self in Parker's absence. He remained active on defense and made the best of his chances on offense, doing a particularly good job of getting to the line. He's not the impact player Patty Mills can be when his shot is on, but it's comforting to know the Spurs have a steady third string PG for emergencies.

Aside from Tim Duncan and at times Kawhi Leonard, the starters struggled on offense. Splitter started the game terribly but righted the ship as the minutes passed, improving defensively and finishing strong with four timely points in the fourth quarter. As for Green, with no one providing open three pointers off drives, he was largely ineffective. He barely played in the first half and it was obvious why. Danny misses Tony more than anyone.

Speaking of Green, Marco Belinelli probably should have started in his place. The starters needed that extra playmaker and it was no surprise the Spurs' big second quarter push started with Belinelli, Duncan and Leonard on the floor together. I'm hoping Pop takes notice and makes the adjustment if he sits Parker again. Belinelli can clearly stretch the floor, as his four triples attest to, and can take the playmaking burden off Leonard.

Patty Mills, Manu Ginobili and Boris Diaw, the other members of the Foreign Legion, had pretty typical games, combining for 25 points, nine boards and seven assists. The turnovers, a combined seven, were not ideal, but the bench continues to be a huge asset for the Spurs, especially in games against weaker opponents.

Nobody likes anything as much as Jeff Ayres likes to dunk with force. I'm not exactly complaining, as it can result in awesome highlights. But perhaps Ayres should ask Splitter to teach him how to hit reverse layups and ask Timmy how to pump-fake; it might be a good idea.

Matt Bonner finished with a +17 on the night in 17 minutes. I think single game plus/minus is beyond meaningless and you should call me out on it if I ever try to use it to make a point. But it's just fun to see how Bonner always seems to be near the top in that category, regardless of his numbers.

The Magic have a nice little roster taking shape. They have a few youngsters that seem like quality starters or at the very least rotation players in Oladipo, Vucevic and Nicholson and a couple of wild cards in Harkless and Doron Lamb. With a high pick, a free agent signing and whatever they can get for their veterans in a trade, they should be on their way to the playoffs in the East in a couple of years.

The Spurs will play the Rockets tomorrow and with the starters not playing much in Orlando, could actually have a go at it with their full team. Or Pop could rest Duncan, Ginobili, Parker and Leonard. You never really know with Extraneous G.

For the opponent's perspective, visit Orlando Pinstriped Post. Their recap includes some pretty good quotes about our Spurs.

Even without Tony Parker, the Spurs avoided their first losing streak of the season with a victory in Orlando tonight. Tim Duncan looked good, and the second unit was too much for the Magic squad. The Good Guys stay on top of the West with a 14-2 record.

The Foreign Legion was at it again tonight. Outscoring the Magic's bench 52-32. Manu Ginobili had a stretch toward the end of the third where he scored seven straight points for the Spurs, tossed the lob on an ultra rare ALLEY-OOP, then stole the ball and made a nice outlet to Mills, who unfortunately could not connect from deep. Marco Belinelli was outstanding tonight, and finished with 19-points on a night he was a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown. He seems to have really found a home in San Antonio.

This came out before the game:

Tim Duncan: 9.6 PPG in his last 9 games. From @EliasSports: Duncan has never been held under 10 PPG in 10-game stretch in his NBA career.
— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) November 29, 2013

Well, he still hasn't. Tim went 8-for-13 from the field to finish with 19 and 9 in just over 23 minutes of work. That's good work from the GOAT PUFF, and by my math puts his last 10 games at 10.5 ppg.

The Spurs continue to roll over lesser teams, but tomorrow night's SEGABABA at home vs. Houston should be a tougher test.

San Antonio Spurs @ Orlando Magic

Amway Center, Orlando Florida
November 29, 2013, 6:00 PM Spurs Time
TV: FSSW - RADIO: 1200 AM WOAI

After weeks of smooth sailing, the Spurs ran into stormy conditions in Oklahoma City, as they had an off-night against arguably the co-favorites in the Western Conference. The resulting loss snapped an 11-game winning-streak for San Antonio the day before Thanksgiving. Despite the road loss, the Spurs remain 13-2 with plenty to be thankful for, like a game the team should win on the road against a depleted Orlando Magic team.

The Magic aren't an overly-impressive team on paper, but at 6-9 and with only a negative 0.5 point differential on the season, Orlando is not a team to be taken lightly. Jacque Vaughn's squad is on its own two-game winning streak, including a win over Philadelphia on Wednesday. In that game, center Nikola Vucevic led the way with 21 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and three blocks. He received late help from Arron Afflalo and consistent play from rookie shooting guard Victor Oladipo. Unfortunately for the Magic, starting point guard Jameer Nelson went down with a sprained ankle and may miss time moving forward.

The loss of Nelson is a problem for a Magic team with a light bench. In the Wednesday win over Philadelphia, Orlando had just three players off of the bench record over 15 minutes of game action, and one of those players was point guard E'Twaun Moore who took over duties for an injured Nelson midway through the second quarter. Outside of the starters, the Magic rely on Andrew Nicholson down low and Maurice Harkless on the wing off of the bench and with Nelson possibly missing time that eliminates one more player from the rotation, forcing Ronnie Price into more playing time in the near future.

Orlando's middle-of-the-pack record is shown in its middle-of-the-pack stats. At 99.6 points scored per game, the Magic rank 16th in the league. Orlando ranks 21st in points allowed, 13th in rebounding and 15th in assists per game. Six players average over double figures for Orlando, including Nelson. Glen Davis has been a bright spot over the past week-and-a-half, scoring 16 points in his second start of the season after missing the first 11 games due to a broken bone in his left foot. He's averaged 11.3 points and 5.7 rebounds since returning while Nicholson is adding 10 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in 19.5 minutes a game off of the bench. Jason Maxiell plays scarcely off of the bench, putting a lot of pressure on Vucevic to carry the load down low.

It will be interesting to see how Orlando reacts to Nelson being out of the lineup if he misses the game completely or is limited in any way because Orlando doesn't have the bench to play an up-tempo style for an entire game and without Nelson it might not have the floor general to execute the offense in a contest that becomes a battle in the half-court. Orlando only had 26 bench points in the win over Philadelphia and seven of those disappear if Moore starts in place of Nelson tonight against the Spurs.

Orlando started and ended the game well against Philadelphia, but when the 76ers were able to run the second unit out, the Magic had no answer. One of San Antonio's best attributes is its ability to throw different lineups on the court at different times. Orlando is very limited in how it can adjust throughout the game because guys like Davis, Vucevic, Afflalo and Oladipo find themselves on the floor for 35+ minutes a game. Even Moore recorded 30 minutes off of the bench against Philadelphia and Nelson didn't get hurt until midway through the second quarter.

Afflalo and Oladipo are capable of scoring in bunches in the lane and on the perimeter as the two start to build chemistry, but Nelson being hobbled or out of the lineup will eliminate a lot of the flow the Magic have played with during stretches this season. Orlando just doesn't have the firepower to stay with a dialed-in San Antonio squad.

And for this San Antonio team that really becomes the question throughout the season against inferior competition: How dialed in will the Spurs be for 48 minutes? If San Antonio comes off of the turkey and wine coma focused to start a new winning streak, then Orlando doesn't have much of a chance. A poor performance by San Antonio, however, could result in the first losing streak of the young season.

Matchup to watch: Tiago Splitter was signed to a big contract for matchups like this against centers the caliber of Vucevic. The Spurs won't need Splitter's offense to beat the Magic, but they'll count on Splitter to guard Vucevic without help in order to stay on the shooters. If Splitter can keep the Montenegrin big man off rhythm and off of the offensive glass, the Spurs guards will win this game down the stretch.

As always Tony must dominate Fisher, and NBA league pass is recommended for those who are willing to pony up the cash. Almost every Spurs game will be broadcast there, which is especially helpful for those of us who aren't in the San Antonio area. Please don't post links to illegal game feeds in the game thread.
