San Antonio was ruthless, efficient and hungry in its first east-coast game, blowing out a Knicks team that didn't seem to show up for the early start.

Game 7 @New York: Spurs 120, Knicks 89 1st in Southwest, 1st in West Streak: W4

Well, that was anticlimactic.

The Spurs' early-afternoon tilt opposite the NFL was the personification of the classic sports bar argument about basketball, the timeless debate about what's more entertaining to watch, college hoops or the pro game.

The Spurs need to improve their shot selection

The Spurs have uncharacteristically been taking too many inefficient shots to start the season and it has wrecked havoc on their once elite offense.

I've always been a passionate advocate of the NBA for one simple reason: I don't ever want to watch anybody play ball on television or in person and come away thinking "I could ____ better than that guy," whether it's shoot free throws, three-pointers, throw a post entry pass, what have you. I want to watch the best of the best. I want to see people play with five guys as one, to execute intricate plays, to knock down open shots all night long like it's nothing and to pull off breathtaking feats of athletic and acrobatic daring do that I couldn't imagine pulling off in a video game.

Exhibit A for why I greatly prefer the NBA is the way the Spurs played today.

Angry isn't quite the right word for it, but they had this edge about them that was hard to explain. Maybe annoyed is better. A bunch of annoyed, world-class professionals barely hiding their contempt at having to play opponents not worth their time. It was reminiscent of those early round Champions League games in soccer, where a superpower like Barcelona or Bayern Munich will be facing the token team from the Romanian league or somebody like that. It's a game that counts, it's vital that the favorites win, but at the same time you know Lionel Messi is thinking, "I can't believe I'm in freaking Romania playing on a Tuesday when I could be getting rest for Saturday's game against Real Madrid."

If that reference went over your head, here's a simpler one: The 1992 Dream Team versus Angola.

I don't know if Gregg Popovich laid into them after Friday's miserable offensive showing, or if the team was ticked about having to play what was, in effect, a morning game on Sunday with their body clocks all out of whack, but whatever frustrations they came in with they took out on the poor, hapless Knicks, who never had a chance in this one.

The Spurs were ruthless, brutal and efficient from the opening tip, racing to leads of 10-0 and then 26-9 and coasting from there. They exploited Andrea Bargnani: Lone Rim Protector (which sounds like a bad Saturday Night Live skit) time and again, with Tony Parker getting whatever he wanted on drives to the hole, Kawhi Leonard taking it to the basket with no resistance whatsoever and many, many wide open threes throughout the game.

This is why I prefer the pros: No college team could ever dream of executing on both ends of the floor as brilliantly as the Spurs did. They were a wonder to behold. Neo-ball, all game long.

Exhibit A for why many folks prefer the college game is the way the Knicks played today.

It'd be one thing if they were just terrible, if they just happened to shoot poorly, fumbled some passes into careless turnovers or were beaten into submission by a superior opponent. Fans can handle that. Sometimes it's not your day. What was troubling, pathetic and inexcusable from a neutral point of view is that the Knicks players - from Carmelo Anthony on down - looked completely apathetic, listless and uninterested from jump street. Not one guy came anywhere close to competing out there on Sunday. It was an embarrassing display in front of their home crowd. (You'll notice I didn't write "effort," because there wasn't any.)

I don't know whether Tyson Chandler's broken leg has crushed the collective esprit de corps of the Knicks so early into the season or if they, too, were put off by having to play so early, but none of them seemed to have even an ounce of faith coming into the game that they had a chance of beating the Spurs. You could see it in their collective body language. There seemed to be a unspoken understanding, "Let's just jog around and not get hurt out there and we'll save our energy for easier opponents against whom we have a fighting chance," or, if you're really cynical, it was more like "Who cares? We get paid the same either way."

I don't know if Mike Woodson had a game plan for the Spurs beyond "Wear really hideous neon orange jerseys and hope the Spurs forfeit out of nausea," but if their coaching staff had prepared a scouting report none of the players so much as glanced at it. Nobody seemed the least bit aware of who Danny Green was and what he specializes in. They treated Kawhi Leonard like he's some guy who can't dribble. They fouled Tim Duncan like he was DeAndre Jordan. It was all baffling.

Say what you want for the college game -- they can't shoot a lick, the point guards can't run any offense and the post games are abysmal -- but at least the college guys try hard every time out. No matter how unskilled and untalented the teams are, you'll never see a team lay a collective turd like that, insulting the intelligence of every fan and making them openly question why they wasted the time and money when there are so many other options for their precious little free time and disposable income.

We're damned lucky to be Spurs fans and this game was another reminder, far beyond the final score.

Standard Pop Quote:

"I thought tonight we played a good, solid B+, A- game. There were some good things out there."

By The Numbers:

19,812: Today's attendance.

0: Lead changes

0: Ties

1: Rebound for Boris Diaw in 25:00.

10: Rebounds for Tim Duncan, giving him his first double-double of the season.

10: Rebounds for Danny Green, a career-high, giving him his first ever double-double as a pro.

+35: Green's team-best plus/minus figure, in 22:52.

-27: Carmelo Anthony's team-worst plus/minus figure, in 34:43.

19.4: Manu Ginobili's shooting percentage from downtown through seven games.

2: Days the Spurs have retained the NBA Regular Season Championship Belt

Sequence of the Game:

With 6:50 to go in the first quarter, Green leaped WAY up to emphatically swat a layup attempt from Raymond Felton (note: it could've been a goaltend) into the hands of Marco Belinelli. For once, the Knicks got back in transition, so the Spurs got into their halfcourt offense, with Parker on the left wing and Duncan posting up Bargnani. Parker gave Duncan a subtle signal and Duncan quickly spun behind Bargnani, sealing him off and leaving nobody in the paint to challenge the driving Parker, who scored an absurdly easy layup, prompting a dejected Woodson to call time.

Random Observation:

In my preview for the game I had some immature fun at J.R. Smith's expense and it was immature and wrong. I feel like a bit of a dope, and I'm better than that. Anyway, Smith did indeed make his season debut for the Spurs, and to be perfectly blunt, he was pretty poor, shooting 1-of-9 with three air-balls and four turnovers. He has a chronic habit of taking some really bad, ill-advised shots. Still, it was only his first game of the season, he's obviously rusty and we need to realize that Smith is a streaky shooter who can score from everywhere when he's feeling good. It's not like he's some bum like <strike>Hasheesh</strike> Hasheem Thabeet, this guy can really play.

Your Three Stars:

When's a SEGABABA not a SEGABABA? When A) it's a night game after a day game the day before, B) it's across a bridge from the last game and C) it's against a crappy Sixers team. Yes, the Sixers are technically second in the Eastern Conference at 4-3. They have wins over the Heat and the Bulls to their name. I'll be honest - I didn't think these guys would have four wins in 2013. Former Spurs assistant Brett Brown has them playing hard and believing, rookie point guard Michael Carter-Williams isn't making anyone miss Jrue Holiday, and they've got three other quality NBA players in Evan Turner, Spencer Hawes and Thaddeus Young. And James Anderson starts for them, which is amazing. I've talked so much trash about the Sixers already that it'd be karmic retribution for them to beat the Spurs, but I'll believe it when I see it -- Spurs by 14.

The Spurs showed no mercy against the reeling Knicks in Madison Square Garden.

The schedule early in the season hasn't been kind to the Spurs. The good guys have already had two BABAs this season and were visiting New York for an early-starting FOGASINI leading to a SEGABABA. Fortunately, this Knicks team at this point of the season was the best possible opponent for a tired, road-weary team to face.

The Knicks were coming into this game without their defensive anchor, Tyson Chandler, which forced them to start Andrea Bargnani at center. J.R. Smith was making his official debut this season after a suspension and looked predictably rusty. Amare Stoudamire is not even close to peak form. Carmelo Anthony has struggled to get going after a fantastic scoring season in 2012/13. Iman Shumpert has been the target of trade rumors. Of all the good teams out there, the Knicks are reeling the hardest right now and a win in MSG seemed close to guaranteed provided the Spurs showed up to play. And they sure did.

Gregg Popovich continued to experiment with lineups, using the Spurs' depth and versatility to match the Knicks small-ball starting unit. Boris Diaw started in Splitter's place and Marco Belinelli replaced Kawhi Leonard at the wing. With a spaced out floor to work with and a terrible help defender in Bargnani charged to try and contain him, Tony Parker went to work, knifing through the Knicks' defense like he has so many times in his career against weak inside presences. When the Knicks helped, the Spurs - and Danny Green in particular - rained threes.

On the other end, the Spurs' defense continued to shine as it has for most of the early season, limiting the Knicks to just 17 first quarter points by trying to deny Anthony the ball and daring others to do the scoring. Andrea Bargnani and Raymond Felton are fine offensive players, but if your team relies on them to carry it, you are in trouble. That's especially true if your designated bench gunner air-balls multiple shots in his first stint of the season and your former franchise power forward seems like a shell of his former self. The Spurs' bench, meanwhile, was humming. That will happen when you have guys that would be starting in 90% of teams in the league like Kawhi Leonard, Manu Ginobili and Tiago Splitter relieving your starters. Everything worked for the Spurs in this one as they got an early lead that would only grow as the minutes went by.

The game was pretty much over after the first half. The Knicks conceded with their lack of effort to start the third quarter and with the Spurs maintaining their defensive intensity and Danny Green canning triples, things started to get out of hand. Unfortunately for everyone involved, there was still a quarter and a half left to play. Pop made the most of it, giving the usual subs unit some reps instead of clearing the bench too early. Once the Knicks sent their deep bench in, so did Pop and we were treated to some big garbage time minutes for De Colo, which are always entertaining. After some close games to start the season, it was nice to see a good old-fashioned blow-out.

Observations

Danny Green had the best game of the season, and likely his career, with 24 points on 11 shots and ten boards. Green's quick release is a beauty to watch and unless the opponents are always aware of where he is and aggressively chase him off the three point line, he will continue to be a great weapon for the Spurs.

The Spurs corrected all the problems I pointed out about their offense, at least for a game. There were very few mid-range jumpers and they got to the line a lot, especially Duncan, who took 11 freebies. Considering the Knicks' defense was putrid, we can't read too much into it but it's good to see the Spurs going back to the type of scoring performance that made them an offensive juggernaut in the first place.

Perhaps the one dark cloud in an otherwise perfect game was Manu Ginobili's three point shooting. For some strange reason Ginobili can't connect from outside and it's hurting the rest of his offensive game. As the misses pile up, defenses are just not playing him as close, daring him to shoot. That makes it hard for him to drive to the basket, a couple of great long floaters, notwithstanding. Fortunately, his defense and distributing are looking very good so far. But that shot needs to fall for Manu to really be Manu.

There will likely be a more detailed post on this subject in the future but it's great to see the Spurs use their depth to match up against different teams. Against big teams, the Spurs can use Splitter and Duncan as their bigs with Leonard at SF. Against teams with stretch-4s, Diaw can start while Splitter backs up Duncan. And today, against a very small Knicks team, Pop had no problem bringing Splitter and Leonard off the bench. Having those options is a luxury and the Spurs realize that and take advantage of it.

The Knicks are in a lot of trouble. With Chandler out 4-6 weeks, they are relying on a big man rotation of Bargnani, Stoudemire, Kenyon Martin and Cole Aldrich. Their best shot at a not terrible defense would be starting Kenyon Martin next to Melo, but that leaves the Bargnani-Stoudemire tandem off the bench. Woodson and the front office seem committed to J.R. Smith to the detriment of Iman Shumpert and they have very few assets to make a move. The team-building strategy the Knicks have used is a perfect example of what not to do and while it's tough to feel sorry for Knicks fans, at least the smart and funny community from Posting and Toasting deserves better.

The Spurs move to 6-1 and continue to lead the West. They will face Brett Brown and his surprising Sixers tomorrow, in a game that won't likely be this easy but seems winnable.

The Spurs took advantage of a Knicks team missing its defensive anchor to get an easy win in New York. Even with a strange starting lineup featuring Boris Diaw and Marco Belinelli, the Spurs' offense was scorching from the start and their defense was good enough to allow them to get a sizable early lead that they would not relinquish. Tony Parker wrecked havoc against a soft perimeter defense that relied on Bargnani to help inside. The Knicks needed their offense to be in top shape to even have a chance in this one and with J.R. Smith looking rusty in his season debut and Stoudemire looking like a shell of his former self, that wasn't in the cards.

After trailing by 16 by the break, the Knicks seemingly gave up trying as the Spurs tightened their defense to cruise to the finish line with no one playing over 26 minutes. That's fantastic news considering they will battle the high-paced Sixers tomorrow on a SEGABABA. Danny Green was great with 24 points and ten boards and Kawhi Leonard showed he can make an impact off the bench, when the team needs him to. As great as the win was, it's hard to take away anything of value because the Knicks were truly terrible. We can only hope for a repeat performance by the Spurs tomorrow.

San Antonio Spurs @ New York Knicks

Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY
November 10, 2013, 11:00 AM Spurs Time
TV: FSSW - RADIO: 1200 AM WOAI

Spurs v. Knicks should be a bigger deal than it is.

It's odd, considering that these two teams met in an NBA Finals once upon a time and that the Knicks were the squad San Antonio vanquished to capture that elusive first NBA Championship back in 1999, but for me the height of whatever "rivalry" these teams had was during the 90s, when by and large San Antonio vs. New York meant "The Admiral" vs. Patrick Ewing. They squared off 14 times between the 1989-90 and 1997-98 seasons, with Robinson enjoying the slight 8-6 edge. League Pass wasn't around back then, but at least a few of those games were nationally televised. Those games weren't quite the epic clashes that Robinson vs. Olajuwon or Robinson vs. O'Neal were, but they were just below that, and by the time their teams met for the 1999 Finals, the matchup would never be the same. By then Robinson was firmly a second-banana to Tim Duncan and Ewing missed the series with a knee injury.

The Knicks have been laughingstocks for most of the Duncan Era, and even though they've solidified themselves somewhat with the acquisitions of Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler, making it back to the playoffs the past three seasons after an unfathomable six-year absence, they haven't come close to being on the Spurs level for some time. They went after LeBron James hard in 2010, struck out, and have basically been treading the waters of mediocrity since, too good for the lottery, not nearly good enough for true contention.

That being said, the last time the Spurs won in the Big Apple, three of their starters were DeJuan Blair, Richard Jefferson and Keith Bogans. It was way back in Dec. 27, 2009, when the good guys escaped with a 95-88 victory at the Madison Square Garden. Even worse, the Knicks actually swept the Spurs last year, carpet bombing them with threes in San Antonio almost a year ago to this day, Nov. 15, and then capturing the return engagement as well on Jan. 3, taking advantage of a SEGABABA for the Spurs to win easily.

There is certainly an argument for both teams coming into the game. On one hand the Knicks will be without Chandler, who suffered a fracture in his leg in a midweek game versus Charlotte when Kemba Walker slid into him. Chandler, pretty much the only defender of note on the Knicks roster, averaged 11.5 points and 13 rebounds against the Spurs last season and has been a thorn in Duncan's side throughout his career. On the other hand, the game will be a noon start for the Spurs' body clocks and they've traditionally been an awful team during morning/afternoon tilts. When you consider the strong possibility that at least some of the fellas will want to have a night out on the town in the big city, you can easily see a scenario where the Spurs won't be up for the game. Maybe Gregg Popovich will try to organize a team dinner in the slim hope that he can keep his guys from hitting the clubs. I'm not worried about Duncan or Ginobili in that regard, but pretty much everyone else.

As far as the threat the Knicks present on the floor, first and foremost certainly is Anthony, who remains one of the league's top scorers and will be a handful for Kawhi Leonard, Boris Diaw and whomever else the Spurs endeavor to put on him. With Chandler out, I'm guessing Knicks coach Mike Woodson tries to play as small as possible, trying to take advantage with Anthony as his four man.

The Knicks would be in a heap of trouble defensively with Andrea Bargnani as the lone big to defend Duncan, not to mention drives to the basket by Parker and Ginobili, but the matchups would favor them on the other end, too. Would Pop let Duncan roam out to the three-point line to defend Bargnani? Probably not, but he can't have Duncan attempt to guard Anthony either. It's almost as if the Spurs would be forced to play a pure zone out of necessity.

Bargnani is a streaky shooter to be sure, but he's coming off his best game of the season, having scored 25 points and grabbed eight boards in New York's 101-91 win at Charlotte. Neither guard Pablo Prigioni or wing Iman Shumpert are big scoring threats, but they're both good defenders with size, capable of bottling up Leonard and Danny Green in the half court. The match-up to watch will be Parker vs. Raymond Felton, a chunky dude who's given Parker problems in the past.

Where the Knicks may get a boost is from their bench -- specifically J.R. Smith, who's likely to make his season debut after serving a five-game suspension for a drug bust. We have no way of knowing if Smith, who's wasted much of his good will with the team, will come out smoking or if his game has gone to pot; my crystal ball is a bit hazy for him, and his game has always been full of highs and lows. He's a guy who'll keep firing and firing until his team is deep in the weeds and he's been known to get out of joint with the refs too. It may sound half-baked to expect him to save the Knicks so soon, but the very same fans who were ready to stone him for being so dumb will readily cheer him if he sinks a couple of threes.

The 2-3 Knicks are similar to the Spurs in that they've gotten off to a pretty good start to the season defensively, but have been sluggish on offense. They were outrebounded by Charlotte in both ends of their home-and-home, heavily so in the first game where Chandler got injured, but they did stroke twelve threes in the rematch, so maybe they're getting hot at just the wrong time as far as the Spurs are concerned. I imagine they're going to put up quite a few from downtown in this game, for better or worse, while the Spurs will look to be more aggressive in taking it to the basket.

Game Prediction: Spurs by 11.

As always Tony must dominate Fisher, and NBA league pass is recommended for those who are willing to pony up the cash. Almost every Spurs game will be broadcast there, which is especially helpful for those of us who aren't in the San Antonio area. Please don't post links to illegal game feeds in the game thread. Links to illegal feeds are not permitted on SBNation, but you can probably find them out there on the internets if you're resourceful and desperate.
