With just a month until the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend, players are starting to make plans for the event. A new report from Shams Charania suggests the San Antonio Spurs will have a player take center stage the night before the big game.
The Athletic’s Charania reports that Victor Wembanyama plans to “commit to participate” in the Skills Challenge in Indianapolis.
The Skills Challenge is the lesser known event on the night of the dunk contest and three-point contest. It consists of teams of three players going through a gauntlet of challenges to test their passing, dribbling and shooting skills. What used to be a single player event has been transformed into a team game, with the Utah Jazz and Cleveland Cavaliers taking the last two titles since the event changed.
Teams are not always based on a pro squad. For example, the Antetokounmpo brothers and 2022-23 rookies have formed teams.
It hasn’t been revealed who will be joining Wembanyama in the challenge. A rookie team consisting of Wemby, Chet Holmgren and Jaime Jaquez Jr. would be fun, but with Jaquez Jr. rumored to be participating in the dunk contest, that lineup could be different. The Spurs could be represented with Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan joining him. My pitch is “team unicorn” filled with Wembanyama, Holmgren and Kristaps Porzingis.
This may not be the only event Wembanyama will participate in. He will certainly be offered a chance to play in the Rising Stars game. The only question is if he will actually play in the game due to his lingering ankle issue. Wembanyama is likely a long shot to make the All Star game at this point, despite his impressive play. He finds himself eighth in fan votes among the Western Conference Front Court. You can vote for Wembanyama and other players here.
At the very least, Wembanyama will get the chance to show off his multi-faceted game in Indianapolis on Saturday, February 17th at 8 p.m. ET.
