It’s time for Basketball: Spurs at Timberwolves

After a rare mid-season break, the Spurs try to end their losing streak in Minnesota

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

It feels like forever since the Spurs have played a game, but it was only last Friday. Tonight, Victor Wembanyama is back, and he’s matched up against an opponent he knows well from his history in France, Rudy Gobert. The Timberwolves are one of the very few teams in the NBA that have two bigs in their starting lineups, but Karl-Anthony Towns and Gobert against Zach Collins and Wembanyama is probably a big mismatch at this point in their careers.

KAT scored 60 against the Spurs on March 14, 2022, and although quite a bit of that total was stat-padding, his scoring ability cannot be ignored. The Wolves are loaded with talent, and Mike Conley is still a very effective player in hid 17th year in the league, scoring 11 with 6 assists in the Timberwolves 117-110 victory at Frost Bank Center on November 10. Tonight’s game in in Minnesota, but the Spurs have been improving lately, and the well-rested Silver and Black might be able to make it a competitive game of it. If not, the Bulls come to San Antonio on Friday, which might their best chance for a slump-buster win.

For some unknown reason, this game is on national TV, which seems to be a real miss by the schedule makers. The second game will be Lakers vs. Clippers, which should be, in theory at least, a much more enjoyable watch.

Game Prediction:

Before the game, Rudy will say to Victor (in French): “Quickly as you can, Grasshopper, snatch the pebble from my hand.” Wembanyama will oblige, stealing the ball (which is just a pebble to him) from Gobert multiple times during the game.

One final word:

Go Spurs GOOOOOO!!
