It’s time for Basketball: Spurs at Trail Blazers (again)

The Silver and Black look for a second consecutive win, this time without Wembanyama

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

Last night, the Spurs played one of their better games of the season as they seemed be finally figuring out how to use the unique talents of Victor Wembanyama on both offense and defense. There were still plenty of mistakes and boneheaded plays, but the moments of greatness from the 19 year old French phenom overshadowed the usual Spurs comedy of errors to lead the Spurs to a rare win.

Pop has already said that Victor won’t play tonight, and that means that the Spurs will be trying to extend their win streak without their best player. In order for that to work, they’ll have to get consistent performances from players who have been up and down all season, like Devin Vassell and Malaki Branham.

Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan have been pretty great in the last couple of weeks, and they’ll need to keep it up tonight. The Trail Blazers dominated the glass last night, and the Spurs will need Zach Collins and Sochan to step up and grab some boards tonight. The biggest problem was the poor closeouts on three-point shooters, and the Spurs guards and wings are going to have to a better job guarding Jerami Grant and Malcolm Brogdon, who were able to light up the scoreboard last night when their defenders left them wide open in the flow of the offense. Let’s watch and see how much of this gets cleaned up tonight, because if the Spurs just play a little better on defense, they really have a shot at a second consecutive win, matching their longest win streak of the year.

Game Prediction:

Zach Collins will be called for at least two fouls that he does not commit tonight.

One final word:

Go Spurs GOOOOOO!!
