I gotta be honest with you, for most of the season, watching the Spurs has been a chore. It’s not just the losing, it’s the ugly basketball, the lack of any coherent strategy, and precipitous collapses when the game is on the line.
Wednesday night was different. Although the Spurs didn’t play particularly well for the first three quarters, they kept the score within reach, and the glorious comeback late in the game was worth waiting for, as Keldon Johnson and Victor Wembanyama almost the Silver and Black to a magnificent comeback. There were still a few warts on an overall attractive effort, as a inexcusable late turnover and a few missed shots made the effort fall a little short, but the effort was there, and the Spurs looked like a competitive team that just needs to clean up the worst mistakes to compete. There was no quit in the team on Wednesday, and that was the most encouraging sign.
Tonight’s game might be a taller order, as LeBron James is expected to return, and the Lakers at full strength are one of the better teams in the west. All I want to see tonight is a continuation of the effort level of the last contest, and hopefully another solid effort from Victor. It would also be nice to see fewer soft passes that are easily intercepted by the Lakers tonight. Let’s watch and find out.
Coach Pop will help LeBron James with his AARP membership application at halftime.
One final word:
Go Spurs GOOOOOO!!
