For those who are familiar with the Open Thread, you may be aware I have a thing for numbers. In particular, I find the jerseys players pick (or are in some cases assigned) fascinating. there are sometimes patterns to the numbers associated with title runs, some numbers repeat more often than others, and some numbers emerge at strange times.
Marilyn recently posted the list of players attending training camp, and as far as I can tell, it was the first time a jersey number had been paired with some of these players.

Bryn Forbes is returning to the San Antonio Spurs, but he is not taking his original #11, it has been assigned to new draftee Josh Primo before Forbes inked his deal. No worries, he couldn’t have #11 in Milwaukee last season (Brook Lopez already had it) and went with #7. He’s keeping #7 now which stands to reason as he just won a title wearing it.
Doug McDermott will be wearing #17, only the fifth Spurs player to do so. Two of those four (Mario Ellie and Brent Barry) were also wearing it when three of the Spurs five Championships were won. McDermott most recently wore and frequently has worn #20. #20 is not available...ever.
Thaddeus Young will be wearing #30. he has worn #30 previously in the one season he spent with the Brooklyn Nets. He more often has been in #21. sadly, that one is also permanently unavailable.
Finally, and most curious is Al-Farouq Aminu. He is wearing #77. An odd choice for sure, but did anyone tell him the fate of the last #77? The only player in Spurs history to wear #77 is DeMarre Carroll. This could be the most revealing hint to the thirty-one-year-old’s future with the franchise.
You can expect more observations as we hone in on the rest of the Spurs training camp roster.
One discussion to ponder for the day — if only one player from the list above could eventually have his number hanging in the rafters at the AT&T center, on which player would you put your money?
