Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.
The Spurs are 0-5 so far in Summer League, counting both Salt Lake and Vegas games. But never mind, these games don’t actually count, so it doesn’t matter. What does matter is seeing the young guys play and avoiding injury. There’s been a big of bad news on both of those fronts, Josh Primo sat out the Chicago game to rest, and Devin Vassell left early because of hamstring tightness. I don’t expect the Spurs to expose either player more than they need to in these meaningless games, but Primo should play some, and Joe Weiskamp should get some burn tonight. Tre Jones has been a bright spot in the Vegas games, and he could be dominant again tonight if he’s not taken out too early. Mostly it’s about seeing guys fight for G-League spots and training camp invites. I’ve been impressed with Nate Renfro, Jaylen Morris and DaQuan Jeffries who have at least held their own against Summer League competition. Probably not well enough to land an NBA roster spot, but good enough for a training camp invite.
Even though these games don’t count in the standings, the effort level by the players is intense, because every one of them is fighting for a job. It’s fun to watch them play as hard as they can, and it’s something to appreciate. The level of effort, but not the quality of play, is probably higher than most regular season NBA games, and it can be a joy to witness, and a little bit frustrating to see when mistakes are made.
One final word:
Go Spurs GOOOOOO!!
