San Antonio Spurs Hype Squad auditions start in July

Are you interested in joining the Spurs Hype Squad? Do you have what it takes?

Longtime readers may recall my foray (and subsequent five-part series) into the cave of the Hype Squad auditions a few years ago. I would reconsider this summer were it not for a wise old Jedi Master reminding me of previous failures.

But I digress . . .

For those of you agile and talented performers who love to get the crowd pumped up, there are multiple opportunities to audition in various formats. Here is the complete timeline via the Spurs NBA site:

The Hype Squad has slate of Prep-Clinic’s and Auditions coming your way this summer! Spurs Hype Squad Auditions are open to dynamic male and female performers from across the country with a desire to engage and entertain audiences of all sizes and serve as ambassadors of the San Antonio Spurs and the Austin Spurs both on the court and in the community. Auditions to join the Spurs Hype Squad start this summer.

Mandatory Requirements

• 18+ years of age on September 1, 2021
• Ability to attend all 2021-22 Spurs home games
• Ability to attend 2 practices per week throughout season (typically Tuesday/Thursday)
• Reliable transportation and live within 75 miles of San Antonio
• No concurrent membership with another professional or collegiate dance/cheer team

Judging

The judges are looking for athletes who embody energy, professionalism, and talent. You will be judged on:

• Representation of the Spurs brand and values
• Athleticism
• Freestyle/Individual talent
• Energy/Engagement
• Choreography

Calendar of Events:

July 5-19: VIRTUAL

Registration & Freestyle Video

Interested applicants from across the globe will submit waiver, questionnaire, headshot, and a freestyle video via Hype Squad website.

July 20: VIRTUAL

Timed Choreography- Applicants who submitted all requirements by the July 19th deadline will receive an email with a link to choreography at 2pm CT. Applicants have 6 hours to record themselves doing the choreography and send it back. No videos will be taken after 8pm CT

July 23: VIA EMAIL

1st cuts- Applicants will be notified by email of their status

July 31: IN-PERSON, AT&T Center

Day 1 Final Round: Applicants who have advanced will be tested on fitness, fan engagement, representation of Spurs values, and teamwork.

Everyone will learn new choreography to be performed the next day

August 1: IN-PERSON, AT&T Center

Small Group Evaluation- Applicants will demonstrate the new choreography and be evaluated on talent group requirements
