It’s time for San Antonio Spurs at Miami Heat

The last team to beat the Spurs was the Heat, but on the road, the Silver and Black have a shot for their fourth win in a row

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

With 12 games left to play, the Spurs’ magic number over the Pelicans is down to 7, which means that any combination of Spurs wins and Pelicans losses that add up to 7 or more will put the Spurs into the play-ins with a chance to advance into the playoffs, where the young players can gain valuable experience in the NBA post-season. Both teams have games tonight, so there’s a possibility that the magic number will be as small as five by the end of the evening. But the team that the Silver and Black is facing, the Miami Heat, has their own playoff race to consider, and they won’t be granting any favors tonight.

The last time these two teams met, just one week ago, the Heat put the Spurs away in the fourth quarter, with Tyler Herro going nuclear in the final frame as the Spurs ceded him open shots on the perimeter as he cashed in, turning what had been a close game into a rout. The Spurs have been playing much better defense the last week (strange to say after they game up 143 points on Monday), and they also play better on the road, so the hope is that Dejounte Murray and the Spurs backcourt will do a better job tonight at making it harder for the Heat to walk into open shots with early offense. Jakob Poeltl has been doing a great job or running the floor to cover up any defensive flubs by the Silver and Black, and if he can keep himself out of foul trouble tonight, he should limit the effectiveness of Bam Adebayo. Let’s cheer the Silver and Black to a big victory tonight!

The Heat in the paint are led by a guy called Bam, for the Spurs it’s a what we call a Poeltl Slam. Because if there’s one that beats a fast break lob, is a hustling chase-down erasure from Blockob.

One final word:

Go Spurs GOOOOOO!!
