The NBA says goodbye to Elgin Baylor

The league loses the Lakers legend.

Los Angeles Lakers v Boston Celtics

NBA legend Elgin Baylor passed away due to natural causes yesterday.

He was with his wife and daughter. The family has respectfully requested time to mourn.

“Elgin was the love of my life and my best friend,” his wife, Elaine, said in a statement provided by the team. “And like everyone else, I was in awe of his immense courage, dignity and the time he gave to all fans. At this time we ask that I and our family be allowed to mourn his passing in privacy.”

Only Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan averaged more points per game in their careers than Baylor.

Beloved by all who knew him, appreciation among players and fans alike immediately hit social media. Naturally, the NBA is mourning the loss.

Baylor played his entire career with the Lakers, his first two season in Minnesota.

Baylor was also an NBA executive serving as the Los Angeles Clippers VP of basketball operations. He was the league’s 2006 executive of the year.

Elgin’s No. 22 jersey was retired by the Lakers in 1983.

Rest in peace, Mr. Baylor.
