Spurs fans’ know Matt Bonner’s pre- and post-game prowess. He’s a congenial style melds well with the Spurs broadcast team and his positive take is as dependable as the fans of the team he reps.
For those who enjoyed Spurslandia’s debut — and who doesn’t love forty-one minutes dedicated to Patty Mills — the latest installment already shows the breadth of host Matt Bonner’s knowledge of not only basketball, but music.
In what could have been a podcast dedicated to Spurs players and coaches, opponents and the NBA, episode number two featured guest Win Butler, singer of Arcade Fire. At first look, a Canadian rock star may not seem to be a fit on a show dedicated to the Spurs, but Bonner does his homework.
In what is sure to be a motif of the podcast, Win Butler and Matt Bonner knew each other and had a lot in common which is the tie-in. What The Red Mamba manages to do is draw the listener in and create an interest in the things that make him tick.
Win Butler is a good guest. He is a basketball fan which in and of itself isn’t a reason to be a guest in a basketball-based discussion. That said, he and Bonner have an off-kilter discussion that spins from Bonner’s scouting report of Butler to how the musicians tenacity on the court translates directly to his music career.
Episode Two stretches Bonner’s pop culture proficiency and offers his new venture endless opportunities for future episodes and longevity. Spurslandia is sure to find its niche and audience as The Red Rocket continues to exercise his knowledge of a wide variety of topics while bringing in diverse guests.
