It’s time for San Antonio Spurs vs. Utah Jazz

At the halfway point of the tournament, the Spurs need a win to be in contention for a play-in spot

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

After the first two games in Orlando, it was easy to get caught up in Spurs-mania, as the Spurs beat two good teams to advance into playoff contention. But in games 3 and 4, the Spurs met teams with talented frontcourts, and despite valiant efforts from Jakob Poeltl and Drew Eubanks, the Spurs couldn’t stop Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic from dominating the paint and leading their teams to wins against the Silver and Black. The Spurs have gotten really good games from Derrick White, DeMar DeRozan and Rudy Gay, but inconsistent efforts from the bigs and other supporting players have kept the good guys from finishing out games with wins.

Today, in a very early game, the Spurs face another team with talented bigs, although Rudy Gobert isn’t the offensive threat that the centers for the Nuggets and Sixers are. The Spurs need a win to keep chasing the Trail Blazers for either the 8th or 9th spot, although the injury decimated Grizzlies may end up falling far enough to end up out of playoff contention completely. But the Spurs can’t control that, in order to have a chance, they need wins, and today against the Jazz would be a great start as the Spurs start the second half of the bubble games. Go Spurs GOOOOOO!!
