Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.
It’s finally time for Spurs basketball, folks, and it’s a whole new game. The NBA has done an excellent job with putting on the Orlando bubble games, with zero infected players so far, and real games started last night, with the Spurs finally seeing action tonight.
Will we see the exciting lineup of young mustangs who pulled out a scrimmage win against Victor Oladipo and the Pacers, or will Pop return to his old ways of keeping inexperienced players on the pine and giving the minutes to players who have put in their time with the old man? At least Rudy Gay had a good game in the Pacers scrimmage, after looking disinterested and lethargic in the first two practice games, and DeMar DeRozan had a solid effort while allowing much of the offense to run through the younger players.
I’m hoping we will see loads of Keldon Johnson, Lonnie Walker IV, along with Derrick White and Dejounte Murray tonight. They might make some mistakes, but this is a great time for them to learn against real NBA level competition with relatively low stakes, as the Spurs depleted frontcourt isn’t expected to take them into the playoffs.
But we can dream, and it’s going to be time for Jakob Poeltl to show he can be a starting center and for Drew Eubanks to build on his improving performance in the scrimmage games to earn a spot on an NBA roster. It’s going to be fun to watch. Go Spurs GOOOO!!
