Last December, I had the privilege of covering a holiday celebration at The Children’s Shelter. HEB’s Cory Basso brings the annual celebration to the location that serves nearly 5,000 children a year.
Rudy Gay and Lonnie Walker IV, The Coyote, the Spurs Hype Squad, Cheesy Jane’s, and other community businesses joined forces with Basso in bringing the North Pole to San Antonio with a petting zoo, pony rides, carnival games, a food truck, and a visit from Santa.
Watching Gay with the children was a special insight into the man behind the player.
“Let young kids know, we’re basketball players, but we also give back to the community. Part of looking up to someone is idolizing everything. With us being in the public . . . we want to be as good as we can be.”
He truly enjoyed himself that evening, and yesterday a Tweet was posted that announced Rudy Gay had donated $10,000 to The Children’s Shelter.
“I’m grateful for you guys giving me the opportunity to give back to such a great program. It’s an honor for me.”

If you are looking to make a difference in someone’s life during this pandemic, The Children’s Shelter does amazing work.
For these children, this is their home for three months. All the children with the organization have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect. It takes a staff of 368 and an additional 188 volunteers to support the children during their time at the shelter.
The mission of The Children’s Shelter is to restore innocence and strengthen families. Last year, The Children’s Shelter provided a continuum of Trauma-Informed Care through a comprehensive family of services for more than 6,000 children, youth, and families.
