As Marilyn pointed out yesterday, the Spurs currently have eight players on their roster that they drafted in the last five drafts. They also exercised options on Lonnie Walker IV, Keldon Johnson, and Luke Samanic. But the biggest news of the last 48 hours for Spurs fans was the extension of Derrick White.

White signed a four-year/$73M extension to continue the great work he has done with the Spurs. He sat down and answered some questions regarding the extension process, his future, and how he has acclimated to San Antonio.

White on the actual process of working out an extension by the deadline and staying with the San Antonio Spurs.

“It was crazy it’s a different feeling definitely from draft day, but I am happy that we came to a decision. I am happy to be here for four more years. I was excited to get drafted here, just to be a part of this organization so it’s nice having that level of comfort be in a place where I like everyone around here. They want the best for me as a person and as a player, so I’m really excited about staying here.”

Regarding the future of the Spurs . . .

“I’m excited with the direction we are going- Dejounte, me, Keldon, Lonnie, Devin, Tre, everyone we’re bringing has the right attitude, right mindset, so I am excited just to keep getting better, keep improving, and get back to be where the Spurs should be so, I am excited to be here for that process.”

. . . and his role in the process . . .

“Just keep getting better, I mean, every year I think I’ve gotten better, gotten more comfortable. From that time off from the hiatus to the bubble I’m going to just keep working nothing is going to stop from that aspect for me. Keep grinding just be the best player I can be.”

When asked about his feelings regarding the city of San Antonio . . .

“Yeah, I love the fans, I love the people here. It’s awesome going around and seeing the support that we get whether it’s during the game or off the court so I’m real thankful for all the fans and I love them all so hopefully I can keep playing well and they cheer well for me”.

Derrick is heading into his fourth season. He was drafted 29th in the first round of 2017, one season after Dejounte Murray, the genesis of the current youth movement.

With four more years on his contract, it is a safe time to grab yourself a #4 jersey.

Season opener kicks of tonight.
