Happy belated birthday to Spurs big man Trey Lyles

The 2015 draftee celebrates hits the quarter-century mark.

I have an “All Spurs” calendar I keep for birthdays and monumental moments. Every year as players join or exit the team, I update. For some reason, I had typed Trey Lyles’ birthday as November 15th.

Blame it on 2020, blame it on fat fingers, or blame it on shoddy typing ability. Either way, I owe Trey a day.

He was the unexpected spark for the Spurs and a beacon in an often less-than-inspired season. His three-point accuracy made him an offensive threat. Fancy footwork and height also affords him some respect from his opposition.

Jesus Gomez published a piece on Trey as part of his “Should He Stay” series addressing the Spurs’ needs as they head into free agency.

Lyles was the 12th draft pick five summers ago. This should serve as a reminder to the Spurs (and their fans) that their 11th pick next month can turn out to be a difference maker with the right team, the right guidance, and the right skill set.

Happy (belated) birthday, Trey. I have made my calendar adjustment, so stick around and we’ll get this right next season.
