Already pining for the NBA preseason that may never come

Unsure of how the 2021 season will pan out, is it too much to ask the Spurs to televise this year’s preseason games?

The leaves are changing, Texas is cooling (sort of), and the days are getting shorter. As I mentioned yesterday, this is the time time of year when I break out the Spurs flag, lace up a new pair of Spurs-infused Converse, buy myself a new Spurs shirt, and get stocked for the preseason.

There are fifteen roster spots, and in the last three seasons there have been two additional two-way contracts tying a pair of players between the Spurs of San Antonio and those of Austin. But preseason allows for that rare insight into some of the players who were invited to camp but don’t make the cut. It’s where we see names like Jimmer Fredette and Okaro White pop on our screen before disappearing into the further reaches of the basketball world.

Some make an impression and move up to Austin like Dedric Lawson and Daulton Hommes,

It’s where we get to see recent draftees play in San Antonio before settling in to the G-League in Austin. Jaron Blossomgame, Deshaun Thomas, and Cady Lalane come to mind.

The preseason bridges the Summer League and the regular season where the intermingling of hometown favorites and hopefuls give just a hint at what might be.

Looks like Summer League will be lost this year, and unfortunately the San Antonio Spurs don’t typically air their preseason games, so it will take a lot of internet searching and possibly an old school antennae for my stereo to get any glimpse of the truncated 2020-2021 season.

Hopefully, the basketball gods will shine upon us and all games will be made readily available.

After all, it wouldn’t be the NBA without some preseason hype.
