Dejounte Murray looks dominant in workout with other NBA stars

It took an extra year, but it appears the new and improved Dejounte is ready to take the NBA by storm.

NBA: Preseason-Houston Rockets at San Antonio Spurs Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

Spurs guard Dejounte Murray has been in Los Angeles working out with his idol and mentor LeBron James lately. While he has been working out all summer, he was just recently cleared for full contact, and he looked absolutely dominant in a scrimmage that included James, Chris Paul, Anthony Davis, Danny Green, and several other Lakers.

Sure, this isn’t a full-fledged, hard core game, but Murray showed just about every aspect of the game possible here. Some of it was already there — like his defense, ability to drive to the rim, and dominate the boards — but the step-back three, mid-range shooting both facing up and with his back to the basket, and finding the open man in transition all signify significant growth in his game.

Watching Murray, Derrick White and Lonnie Walker IV all show improvement this summer has been very exciting, making it all the more difficult to keep waiting to see how it will translate on the court in an actual NBA game.

48 days.

And before the comments get hijacked by more “Dejounte to the Lakers” conspiracy theories, remember not only do we not know his mindset, but as of now his fate is entirely in the Spurs’ hands.

He can either sign a contract extension by 5:00 PM on October 21 (if he is offered one, which seems unlikely at this point since the Spurs probably want to see if he really has improved after missing all of last season with a torn ACL), or he will be a restricted free agent next summer, and the Spurs will have the right to match any offer than comes his way.

For now, just relax and enjoy what could be a very exciting NBA season as the Spurs’ youngsters continue to rise and they aim to make just about every media pundit and gambling agency eat crow next spring.
