George Gervin spent his summer as head coach of BIG 3 Basketball’s Ghost Ballers

The Iceman has yet to hang it up completely in basketball.

Do you follow Big 3 Basketball? This is the 3-on-3 league created by Ice Cube and featuring some of yesteryear’s best players.

Last August, the Big 3 was supposed to make a stop in San Antonio at the AT&T Center but the game was later pulled and relocated to American Airlines Center in Dallas.

One reason to have kept the event in San Antonio - The “Iceman” George Gervin is the head coach of the Ghost Ballers. Although Gervin and the Ballers — Mike Bibby, Ricky Davis, Chris Johnson, Alex Scales, Mike Taylor, and Solomon Jones — did not fare well this season, a key vintage matchup was available for us elder fans of the sport.

Julius Erving, better known as Dr. J, was also a head coach in this season’s Big 3 with the Tri-State team featuring Amar’e Stoudemire, Nate Robinson, Yakhouba Diawara, Jason Richardson, Robert Hite, and Corsley Edwards.

How cool would it have been to see these two greats squaring off as coaches? Seems the only time we catch them on court is at an All-Star Game. I’m not gonna lie, I’d be more apt to watch the All-Star events if these guys had a bigger role. How about a Big 3 event? Or just Ice and the good Doctor playing H-O-R-S-E? Just a thought.

Are you a fan of the Big 3? If so, share your experience in the comments below.

I, for one, will become a devout fan . . . as soon as the Big 3 locks down Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker under head coach David Robinson.
