Austin Spurs will hold open tryouts

Local player tryouts give the underdog in each of us a chance.

If you’ve been a Spurs fan for more than a few seasons, then you have most assuredly heard the tale of Jonathon Simmons. His rise through the ranks of the Austin Spurs after betting on himself and putting together $250 for the tryout. He turned that $250 into two season with the Spurs and eventually a three-year contract with the Orlando Magic worth $20M.

In addition to Simmons, Devondrick Walker, Jeff Ledbetter, Jordan Green, Daniel Alexander and Cameron Rundles also joined the team through the local tryouts.

On Sunday, September 15, 2019, G-League hopefuls can meet at the Round Rock Sports Center for an open tryout.

Tryout participants should submit the required registration, disclosure and release forms, along with a $175 non-refundable fee prior to Sept 12. Walk-up registration is subject to availability and is $200. Acceptable forms of payment are cash, cashier’s check or money order. Tryouts are limited to the first 200 registered players who submit their completed registration forms and payment. All required forms are available at or by calling the office at (512) 236-8333.

As a member of Pounding the Rock, I have trained like Tim Duncan, tried out for Hype Crew, and gotten up-close-and-personal with many of the Summer League players.

What have I not done? Hit the court.

And for good reason. I can’t play. I’m 5’9” and hit threes like a mad man when no one is watching. The rest of the time I’m basically jogging and trying my best to stay out of the way.

I do hope to be there and observe, meet some of the hopefuls, and get the inside scoop on what playing for the Austin Spurs looks like.

If you are going to tryout, shoot me a line and share your story. You may just be the next player we feature.
