The first game the Spurs played in the Las Vegas Summer League ended abruptly at the close of the third quarter when earthquake tremors were considered a risk. At that point, the Spurs were down but mounting a comeback. And if it was to take the shape of their third game in Salt lake City, then the good guys were not to be counted out.
In the second game since descending in Sin City, the Spurs rested Lonnie Walker IV, Drew Eubanks, and Thomas Robinson. Two of those three have been playing center leaving Darel Poirier as a lone big man. Poirier twisted his ankle and left the game not to return after only two minutes of play.
All throughout, the game was close, but in the end the Spurs were able to pull away. The combination of the three newest members via the NBA draft brought in 54 of the 106 points (19 apiece for Keldon Johnson and Quinndary Weatherspon and 16 for Luka Samanic).
Ben Moore and Jordan Barnett shines as well contributing 17 and 12 respectively. Moore also led the team with eight rebounds.
Josh Magette took the helm for most of his 26 minutes showing why he is a solid ball-handler and distributor. The 6’1” D-League All-Star and former Dutch basketball Steal Leader has shown why he is deserving of consideration to play stateside in this year’s G-League.
And of you missed Jeff Ledbetter’s first half buzzer-beater, you’re missing the finer things in life. Check out the 4:22 spot this highlight reel.
One thing about the Spurs that continually gets noted is their G-League affiliate plays the same game as San Antonio. This allows for the team to gel that much quicker. While many of these players are joining each other for the first time, some of the Spurs have been working at it a little longer.
That said, two major components to that squad’s consistency were resting today. It is obvious that time in Salt lake City has also prepared them for the rigors of Las Vegas as well as bonded them as a unit.
Final Score: Spurs 106, Hornets 96.
Next game: Tonight the Spurs take on the Raptors at 6:00 CST on ESPNU.
