Instead of letting the game get away, the Spurs came out of the locker room and put the screws to the Jazz. Inspired performances by Thomas Robinson, Quinndary Weatherspoon, and drew Eubanks kept the team alive throughout the 3rd quarter.
In particular, Lonnie Walker IV took over in the 4th quarter scoring 14 of his 19.
Lonnie Walker IV on his 4th quarter: "I'm a rhythm shooter, it's all about finding my jump shot. Being comfortable in my own skin. Once I see one go in, I'm going to keep on trying to shoot."— Pounding the Rock (@poundingtherock) July 4, 2019
The game came down to the final seconds on a foul call that should have sent Lonnie Walker IV to the line for three shots that could have tied them up. Instead, the ball was thrown in and Walker took a shot that just missed sending them into overtime.
The Spurs fell shot by 3, but have much to look forward to heading into the Las Vegas Summer League tournament.
Lonnie Walker IV on this next step: "Improvement. Continue to progress. Get better and better by the day. And to show myself."— Pounding the Rock (@poundingtherock) July 4, 2019
Highlights did include a sky hook from Drew Eubanks that got the Spurs fans revved up and blew new life into the squad.
Ahern on Eubanks shooting the sky hook: "I saw a few this year, he usually makes them. I remember the first time I saw him, I didn't know what the heck it was. He's got good touch and usually makes a majority of them."— Pounding the Rock (@poundingtherock) July 4, 2019
I was there, sitting court side tweeting in real time, making notes, and soaking it all in for one last time. I was close to the action. Yes, that close.
I headed back for the post game interviews with head coach Blake Ahern and Lonnie Walker IV. I stopped by the Media Center one last time and tweeted. I thanked the journalist who showed me the ropes throughout my stay, took time to share some appreciation with the Spurs PR staff who included me and made me feel welcome, and exited the building for the last time.
I had a nice walk back to my hotel and reflected on the opportunity to experience Summer League first hand, to dig a little deeper into this journey which is about to hit the two-year mark, and to learn more about the team that I adore as they move into the next phase of their development.
I’ll be back in San Antonio in time for the fireworks tomorrow, ready to watch the Las Vegas games and reminisce about my time in the trenches.
