If there is not an official Derrick White fan club, then I am spending the rest of Spring Break launching one. I was fortunate enough to be standing ten feet from him the other night and was just barely wise enough not to interrupt him and make a fool of myself.
While watching the Spurs play the Bucks on Sunday night, one play in particular stood out. While receiving a pass in the backcourt from a LaMarcus Aldridge rebound, White turned on the jets to go at Giannis Antetokounmpo and then slowed down enough to cause The Greek Freak to collide with Malcolm Brogdon, his own teammate. It is the first of the highlights in the tweet below.

The confusion led to a Derrick White dunk that looked effortless. And this against a stellar defender who is a front runner for this year’s MVP award.
White’s phenomenal ability to weave through the court and maintain his cool when cornered, double-covered, or trapped reveals a player few if any expected him to be at the beginning of the season.
I’m still scratching my head as to why he wasn’t invited to the Rising Star games this past All-Star Break. But then again, wondering why the best players don’t get asked to All-Star activities is practically a Spurs fan’s tradition.
Oh, and I’m serious about that fan club. We’re meeting soon!
