Report: The Spurs re-sign Pau Gasol with a 3-year $48M contract

Yes. This is exactly what he would have made with the player option that he declined. Yes. This doesn’t seem to make much sense.

Remember when Pau Gasol declined his $16.2 million player option to sign a longer contract to help the San Antonio Spurs and their finances? That seemed to be the point when the Spurs announced that Gasol had agreed to sign a three-year deal, but now things have taken a dramatic turn.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Gasol has agreed a 3-year, $48 million deal to re-sign with San Antonio.

That amounts to is a $200,000 discount from the old deal, which might as well be a rounding error. San Antonio has now agreed to pay Gasol $16 million a year for at least the next two years, and he’ll be 40 years old when he enters the final partially-guaranteed season of his contract.

Perhaps something comes to light soon that will help explain why PATFO would sink so much cap space into Pau.
