The Spurs system warps NBA reality

New, comments

When judging players from different teams against each other, the environment they play in can make all the difference.

NBA: San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

The way San Antonio operates makes it incredibly difficult to rate the Spurs individually, or against players on other teams. A recent story on Bball Breakdown did a great job of comparing Kawhi Leonard and Giannis Antetokounmpo from a number of different angles, but the problem inherent in such a discussion is what impact the player’s environment has on how he plays, and what he’s able to do.

So for episode 30 of the Superfluous Poppycock podcast, I spoke with James Holas, a writer for Bball Breakdown and one of the authors of the Leonard/Antetokounmpo story, to discuss Kawhi and Giannis and the roles they play for the Spurs and the Bucks.

We also talk about James’ favorite team, who he thinks will be the dark horse in this year’s playoffs, and where he sees the Spurs in the mix.

James Holas is also the cohost of the Away Team podcast for PressBasketball, host of The Truth Celtics podcast, and a subdued Celtics fan and Russell Westbrook apologist.

For anyone concerned about Seth Warren, he’s currently at his cabin up in the mountains and will be back next week.
