Which Summer Spurs will Popovich invite to training camp?

Now that Summer League is over, J.R. Wilco, Michael Erler and Jesus Gomez attempt to unpack all that happened in Utah and Vegas. In part two, who deserves a training camp invite?

Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

If you missed part one of the conversation, you can catch up here.

Jesus Gomez
Other than Anderson and Simmons, was there anyone on the roster that impressed you enough to convince you they are NBA players?

J.R. Wilco
Good question, especially when we can't even agree on whether Anderson is an NBA player.

Gomez
Ha! That's kind of true but lets play along.

Michael Erler
I think Jesus will agree, the more we watched Treveon Graham, the more impressive he got. He's not great at any one thing, but he can be a glue guy who just fills in and helps on both ends.

Gomez
I do agree. Graham is just a solid player who can do a little bit of everything and he's only 21. I think he might need some more seasoning in the D-League but he has NBA upside in my eyes. A Jared Dudley type.

Erler
I have to see him play more defense. And being a tweener might hurt him.

Gomez
How about Jarrell Eddie? That shot is gorgeous but can he hit consistently and do everything else well enough to be an NBA player?

Wilco
A smooth jumper does not an NBA career make.

Gomez
But it's soooo pretty.

Erler
Eddie will get a job somewhere, but not necessarily with the Spurs. A lot of teams out there are hurting for guys who can hit shots. Like, the Grizzlies have been looking for somebody who can shoot for five years now, and the Spurs routinely reject guys like Eddie.

Gomez
He reminds me of Anthony Morrow, only Anthony Morrow doesn't disappear for long stretches. As much as I love that quick release, I don't see him making a team this season. I thought the Hawks might pick him up but that roster seems full.

Erler
Eddie has to learn that fine line between not disappearing for long stretches but not taking bad shots just to say you're out not disappearing either. Like, the last game he was forcing shots just to say he took shots in the first half.

Gomez
Also known as "the Danny Green line."

Wilco
Hey...

Gomez
Sorry, sorry. Sometimes it's easy picking on Danny so I get tempted. I know how Pop feels.

Wilco
Then you can tell me about the five rings some time.

Gomez
My weird mental connection with Pop is limited to criticizing Danny Green. Sorry.

Erler
Is this the part where you guys make fun of me about Shannon Scott?

Gomez
Yes, it is. Finally!

Erler
My whole argument for him is that he can play defense, which most point guards can't do, so that makes him compelling.  I'm the same guy who argued that point guard defense is about as important as a striker who back tracks diligently in soccer, but still...

Wilco
I guess the first question I'd ask is: does an NBA title contender need four point guards on its roster?

Gomez
Woah, did you just say the Spurs should trade Tony Parker to make room for Scott? Bold...

Wilco
Don't you put words in my mouth!

Gomez
All joking aside, I think we are talking Austin allocations now, not the main roster. And I still don't see the value in Scott. I would like him a lot more if he could hit three-pointers. I know he did well in SL but those college numbers are troubling.

Erler
I'd like him more if he could finish his damn layups. But I do wish Becky would have let him play with the ball more and try to create instead of making it the Anderson and Simmons show.

Gomez
I'd love Cady Lalanne if he could finish his damn layups.

Erler
Cady has no hands. And he fouls the world.

Wilco
Jeff Ayres reincarnated, combined with Ian Mahinmi.

Erler
I have to say, I was really surprised how nondescript Brandon Davies was. Like, he played for two years in the league. And he looked like he was trying out there! And still he couldn't hang for the most part. He was losing minutes to Graham and Darion Atkins. And Will Cherry, who played 69 minutes for the Cavs last year, lost out to Scott.

Jesus
Yeah, the guys with NBA experience weren't all that impressive. You can add Casper Ware, from the Utah Summer League roster, to that list.

Erler
See, how can I not be high on Scott, guys? He already beat out two guys with NBA experience!

Three guys can be allocated to Austin if they are cut last from training camp. So, Cady, Graham and Scott would be my three.

You prefer Eddie to one of those?

Gomez
I'd probably take Eddie, yes. Maybe even Youssou Ndoye if Eddie finds an NBA home, just because you can't teach size. Nothing against Scott but he's a destitute man's Patrick Beverley and there are only so many James Hardens in the league to make a guy like that look good.

What are your three picks, J.R.?

Wilco
I think the Spurs' choices to fill out training camp will surprise us. I doubt we'll have ever heard of them before.

Erler
I like the idea of Graham developing in Austin because he's the kind of guy who doesn't have any standout skills so maybe he won't be poached. He might be more valuable to the Spurs than anyone else. And then in a year he contributes to the team and the world gets angry.

Wilco
I must say, I like it when the world gets angry over things like that.

Erler
Simmons is going to make people absolutely livid.

Wilco
He certainly is.

Gomez
We almost forgot about Livio! What was your impression of Jean-Charles?

Erler
He almost seems too big and slow to be a three. He's like a tweener.

Gomez
He's a full time power forward, I think.  He doesn't shoot threes, like at all. Didn't even shoot them in France.

Erler
He has the range of DeAndre Jordan, without all that pesky jumping.

Gomez
I think he does have a lot of potential on defense but he will need to either improve his hands -- if that's even possible -- or develop at least a mid-range jumper.

Erler
Not sure what Tony's management team is doing over there. They need to have that kid taking thousands of jumpers a day

Wilco
I'm not convinced that LJC is fully recovered from all his knee injuries. I don't think we'll see his top end for another year or so.

Gomez
That's interesting. If he's not fully recovered, his athleticism raises his ceiling.  Let's hope you are right. He's going back to France so hopefully he'll have a bigger role next season.

Give me some quick first impressions on Ray McCallum and Boban Marjanovic.

Erler
I really hope neither have to play unless it's garbage time. R.C. seems high on McCallum though, so maybe I'm wrong. I plan on getting in touch with the Sactown Royalty folks and getting the scoop.

Wilco
I'm intrigued by the idea of the Spurs making McCallum into something more than what he's ever shown before, because as of now that trade just makes no sense to me.

Erler
That's what I'm saying. Scott seems like more of the "third PG" type! Or even Prigioni, who I have to think RC was plugged in enough to know would be out there.

Gomez
I rarely do this but I'm going with "in R.C. we trust" when it comes to McCallum, at least for now. I would have preferred Prigioni but McCallum cost only a second rounder.

As for Marjanovic, I watched him play a year ago and he seemed too slow to play in the NBA but our Serbian friends say he's gotten better. Hopefully they are right.

Erle
I see people smashing on his head a lot. But it'll be something to interview a guy who makes Tim Duncan look small. I should practice craning my neck up.

Gomez
That is one gigantic human being. I can't wait for the first game against Detroit, when he squares off against Aron Baynes.

Erler
Refs are going to call him for moving screens while he's waiting to check into games.

Wilco
A buddy of mine (SiMA to long-time PtR readers) is convinced he'll stop opposing offenses just by taking up space in the paint. I'm not convinced.

Erler
Your buddy must not be aware of concept of guys hitting open 20-footers.

Gomez
Now that SiMA has made an appearance on this chat, I think it's time to wrap things up. The only way to confirm our opinions will be to wait until training camp. How long 'till September?

Wilco
Far too long.
