As head coach of the San Antonio's Summer League team in Las Vegas, Becky Hammon led San Antonio to a win in the final over the Phoenix Suns, becoming the first woman to do so. The Spurs don't make a big deal out of making that kind of history, but it's hard to miss those who are. An ex-GM says he'd call Becky first if he was running a team who needed a coach, and SBNation examined the likelihood that Hammon would become the NBA's first female head coach.
Gregg Popovich and the rest of the Spurs organization have repeatedly said that they don't see Hammon as a female coach. They see her as a coach. And that's as it should be. But as fans, we can be excused if we celebrate her for everything she is: a woman, a basketball player, a coach -- and an excellent coach at that.
In Hammon's final season in the WNBA, I took my daughters to see her play one of her last games for the San Antonio Stars. I'm always talking to them about what they can accomplish if they work hard to achieve their goals, and I'm glad that there's a perfect example that I can point them to -- on the coaching staff of my favorite team.
I've recently had people ask whether we could re-launch the T-shirt that BreakingT created when Hammon was first hired by the Spurs, and when I reached out to the guys at BreakingT, they made it happen. So it's available again.
So for anyone who would like to appreciate Hammon and her accomplishments with a T-shirt, be my guest. Like all of BreakingT's shirts, it's durable, incredibly soft, and it ships out quickly. If you're trying to choose between sizes, go with the larger one.
