San Antonio Spurs vs. Los Angeles Clippers
AT&T Center, San Antonio, TexasJanuary 31, 2015, 8:00 p.m. Spurs Time
TV: FSSW- RADIO: 1200 AM WOAI
After a two day rest since their last game, the San Antonio Spurs will take n the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night. This will be the third time the Spurs and Clippers play each other this year, with San Antonio going 2-0 in previous matchups.
In those matchups, the one constant for the Spurs was Tim Duncan. Both times he's faced Los Angeles, he's gone over 20 points and 10 boards for the night. Really, Duncan has been the one constant for San Antonio all year. As everyone else has gone through their own issues, whether it be an injury, a slump, or a nasty mix of both; Duncan has held steady. He's taken over games on offense as needed, and has been a top rim protector in the league all year.
It's unbelievable that he's able to do this at 38 years old, and it's a testament to how he's had to amp up his own physical training to maintain this stellar play. The one thing you can always count on in this zany Spurs season is for Tim Duncan to bring the energy necessary to win.
The key to stopping the Clippers is to corral their point guard, Chris Paul. Nearly everything the Clippers do starts with him, and it works, as he's lead them to be the 4th highest scoring team in the NBA. Paul directs the Clippers' offense at an expert level, initiating pick-and-roll and getting the ball in the hands of shooters. He knows every hole in every defense, and executes the offensive gameplan accordingly. San Antonio will have to communicate well as a team to figure out where Paul is going with the ball, and how to stop him.
Blake Griffin isn't the hub of all offensive activity like Paul is, but he is the Clippers' most productive scorer, dropping 22.7 points per game this season. Griffin combines his explosive athleticism with an incredible skill level, making him one of the most versatile post scorers in the league. He's able to blow by defenders in the post, and can also face up, isolate, and drill a jumper from midrange distance. Griffin is also capable of setting his teammates up for scores. He's especially lethal when receiving the ball at the free throw line as the roll man. From there, he can hit the jumper, fire a pass to a shooter on the wing, or ob the ball up to DeAndre Jordan for a powerful oop.
