NBA virtual 1-on-1 Tournament: Derrick Rose vs Andrew Wiggins

Derrick Rose got plenty of support during the seeding stage, but can he get past the rookie in the first round?

The next matchup in the 1-on-1 Summer Showdown is between the number one overall pick and a number one seed.

The Rules

It is a half court game in which the scoring increments are 1 point for everything inside the arc, and 2 points for everything outside the arc. So long-distance bombers will do well in our tourney.  The higher seed stars off with the ball and the first player to 11 points wins. The possession switches every time the ball is scored, and your votes determine the winner.

Derrick Rose (1st seed)

When the community voted on seeding, one of the biggest surprises was the overwhelming amount of votes for Derrick Rose to be a 1st seed. He is coming off of a knee injury which will have to be considered during the tournament. His first matchup is the reigning #1 overall pick, Andrew Wiggins.

This matchup should be a good test for Rose. Wiggins is very unpolished, but he is solid on the defensive end. Rose will have to utilize a speed advantage to not let Wiggins bait him into taking long jump shots. Wiggins is a much better defender on the perimeter than when he is trying to guard someone who is attacking the hoop.

Rose is shorter than Wiggins, but Wiggins' unpolished offensive game will make defending him a much easier task.

Andrew Wiggins (8th Seed)

This year's number one overall pick has a tough first round matchup. Derrick Rose offers a plethora of defensive issues. Rose can make jump shots, but what makes him so dangerous for Wiggins is the fact that he can finish at the rim better than 90% of NBA players. Wiggins will have to try to slow down Rose by forcing him to knock down jumpers consistently.

Wiggins is bound to struggle on the offensive end. His game just isn't great on offense yet. Rose is also an excellent defender, which spells a lot of trouble for the rookie.
