The next matchup in the 1-on-1 Summer Showdown is between savvy veteran Dirk Nowitzki and speedy John Wall.
The Rules
It is a half court game in which the scoring increments are 1 point for everything inside the arc, and 2 points for everything outside the arc. So long-distance bombers will do well in our tourney. The higher seed stars off with the ball and the first player to 11 points wins. The possession switches every time the ball is scored, and your votes determine the winner.
Dirk Nowitzki (4th Seed)
Nowitzki is a player that would dominate this tournament if he was five years younger.
He has what any player needs to thrive in this tournament. He can knock down jump shots from anywhere on the court, he can out-strength most players and he is much taller than most players. He will have a significant size and strength advantage against Wall. Nowitzki thrives in backing down smaller opponent's, and this matchup allows him to do that to the maximum.
His biggest issue is that he is not the best defender. He is also considerably slower than Wall which will not allow Notizki to expose Wall's biggest weakness which is his shooting consistency.
John Wall (5th Seed)
Wall is a Wild Card in this format. He doesn't have the most consistent jump shot, he doesn't have a great three point shot, but he is probably the fastest player in this entire tournament and can finish at the rim. He has a chance to beat any player thanks to that speed.
He won't be able to contest Dirk's offense, but Dirk is also slow. Wall will be able to blow by him with ease. Jump shots are bound to bounce out once or twice, but layups can be made again and again. That is the factor that makes this matchup so interesting.
