Spurs reportedly sign Sam Young

Have the Spurs found a defensive-minded small forward to back up Kawhi Leonard? Or is this nothing but a training camp maneuver?

Andy Lyons

The San Antonio Spurs have reportedly reached an agreement with forward Sam Young, according to Shams Charania of RealGM.

The 28 year-old small forward spent time with the Indiana Pacers last year, averaging just 2.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. He is, however, a hard nosed defender and energy guy. Spurs fans will remember him best as one of the members of the Memphis Grizzlies team that beat the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs three years ago. He was also a very good role player for those Grizzlies teams before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in the middle of the 2011-2012 season.

While this may be nothing more than a training camp pick up, or some other non-guaranteed deal, Young does fill a need for a small forward to back up Kawhi Leonard -- especially one that will be content to play low minutes. Look for other young-ish swingmen to be added to the roster before training camp begins in Colorado Springs next week.
