Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips.
- Proverbs 27:2
I hate self-promotion. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the way my father raised me.
"Son," he'd say, "don't toot your own horn. If you do something worth noticing then somebody will see it and tell someone else. Otherwise you'll just be the kind of person who brags about themselves all the time."
Maybe that's one of the reasons I became such a fan of the Spurs, the team that shuns the media like it's a collection of lepers. Turns out that I grew up to be a lot like my dad, and a lot like how he wanted me to be. So when notice and accolades come, I'm not entirely comfortable making a big deal about it. I don't post a lot of my radio appearances on PtR, using them mostly to promote the site in the market where that radio station broadcasts, and that's it.
But this time it's different, because when I spoke with Eliott C. McLaughlin yesterday (as he was researching a piece he was writing on Tim Duncan) our conversation ranged wide and far, and I was able to tell him about so many of the cool things that PtR members have contributed. It was a lot of fun to talk to him about the Spurs and Duncan and the site -- no doubt. But it was even more gratifying for me to see just how often he included those cool little tidbits from the rest of you, because there'd be no way that anyone would want to interview me, if I wasn't plugged in to the collection of knowledge that is PoundingtheRock.com.
Below is a link that I think you'll all enjoy, even if some of the material is already familiar to you. It's a piece about Tim Duncan that was posted this morning on CNN, and can be found on the front page, under the "U.S." section. Eliott, thanks a ton for reaching out to me and valuing the material enough to use it in your piece.
