ESPN's Marc Stein dropped the San Antonio Spurs from 5th to 26th, the largest weekly drop of any team in history, after the defending Western Conference Champions got whacked 10 to 4 by a team of barefooted 9-year old boys in Mexico City Arena. Said Stein, "I try to limit dramatic week to week movement. But in this case, I had little choice."
As usual, Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich declined to discuss power rankings. However, he previously compared the rankings' value to that of Craig Sager's clothing line. Popovich did note that the boys' small stature created match-up problems for the much taller Spurs. And with San Antonio due to play a dreaded B2B the following day against the Timberwolves, Tim Duncan played little in the second half after committing 120 turnovers in the 1st quarter alone. "I couldn't even see them, and their hands were so small," was all a shaken Timmy had to say afterwards.
Despite the loss to the 9 year olds, Cleveland, Boston, Utah and Milwaukee still round out the last four spots in the rankings.
