Game Thread #60- vs Indiana Pacers

Woohoo! A fellow ABA team. We are in the midst of a 4-game string against old ABA'ers.

Nobody is lined up for the recap. Who wants to be the proud selector of our 3 stars?

For those of you who don't know, the book "Loose Balls" about the ABA is out of this world good. I read it about 20 years ago (I think) and loved it. It's full of great anecdotes about what the league was like.

The Pacers don't play much defense and they have a game tonight in Houston. If Tony doesn't run them out of the gym I will be disappointed.

George McGinnis, Mel Daniels, Roger Brown: 92

Road record:

Last 10:

----------------------------------------------

(Sort of) Interesting facts:

► Tonight (for real this time) the Spurs will be using alternative shirts to commemorate the "Fiesta" day, a tribute to the latino community. You can see the shirt here. (Why not "Las Espuelas"? You tell me.)

► The Pacers come from losing to the Rockets by 18 in Houston last night. SA hasn't played since last Tuesday, when they beat NJ 81-70. (Can we agree that trading Scola was a bad move now?)

► The Spurs won the last game against the Pacers at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indiana on February 5th by 116-89. Tim finished with 19 points, Vaughn 16, Manu 15 and Bowen 14. Parker was injured and didn't play.

► After this game The Spurs will be facing some toughies: @Denver, @Hornets, @Pistons, @Sixers, Vs. Celtics.

► Like the Nets, the Pacers probably thank God every day that they're in the Leastern Conference. At .393 for the season so far, they're only two games away from the eight playoff berth - held currently by... You got it: the Nets.

► Next games for the Spurs:
   → Vs. Indiana - Thursday 6/Mar - TODAY
   → @ Denver - Friday 7/Mar
   → @ Phoenix - Sunday 9/Mar
   → Vs. Denver - Monday 10/Mar
   → @ New Orleans - Wednesday 12/Mar
   → @ Detroit - Friday 14/Mar
   → @ Philadelphia - Saturday 15/Mar

Probable starting lineup:

Thanks for the info.  However...

"Can we agree that trading Scola was a bad move now?"

No, especially since we'd just replace him with Splitter and Ian next year.

Heh. Well, we'll both be around next year. We'll see. :)

Re: Game Thread #60- vs Indiana Pacers
Truthfully, and it's taken me virtually all season to come to this (after being furious directly after the trade), I agree with this too.

Scola's tearing it up, but I don't think he would have fit in well in SA and can see why we let him go.  That said, I don't and likely will NEVER understand why we traded him for a happy meal and some pogs.  We should have sold him a little better...

Re: Game Thread #60- vs Indiana Pacers
That said, I don't and likely will NEVER understand why we traded him for a happy meal and some pogs.

That's a chronic problem with the Spurs front office.  They were ahead of the curve on drafting foreign players, but they've never been great, or even good, on the trading blocks.  Scola's not the only example - Beno was was regarded as an extremely attractive prospect a year-and-a-half ago, but Pop ruined his trade value by locking him in the doghouse.
We let him go for practically nothing, and then after Sacramento got him, they suddenly noticed he was much better than advertised, and a max-contract Bibby quickly became very expendable.
Seriously, you don't think that either Boston or Cleveland, both of whom have been clamoring for a decent passer at the point position, could have given us something... ANYTHING... for Beno?

I'm not going to complain about the front-office too much - they've got a budget to stay under, and they could definitely be worse (see: Thomas, Isiah).  But the moves this year rank among the worst I've ever seen in terms of the paper-pushing.  The only thing that's salvaged it in my eyes was the Brent Barry manuvering.  That was kinda slick.

chaos... panic... pandemonium... my work here is done.

methinks scola would be a good match-up on D against Flopmeister Wolfenstein.

The Last Gimme For A While
IND: 88
SA:  92

With the toughest stretch of the season coming up, the Spurs can't afford to falter here, especially tonight to an obviously inferior team. Indiana, without J O'Neal and Tinsley, is left with Granger and a couple of white boys who can shoot(Dunleavy and Murphy). But, as Stampler pointed out, we lead the league in Ginobilis, so that should tip the scales in our favor.

Simply put, San Antonio needs a win to continue their momentum and confidence heading into the most brutal part of their schedule.

Goddamn it! DirecTv gives me Showtime for free for like 3 days and it just matches when the Spurs play. I'm gonna miss Hard Candy, with Ellen Page (hmmm, Ellen Page...) just to see the game one the internet. The things I do for the Spurs..

If they really wanted to celebrate the Latino community, they should have put thousands of soccer fans in the stadium, shouting insults at the refs and a opposing team, hanging huge flags from the rafters and jumping all through the game.

Here's to Manu going for 20, 7r and 6a.

I'm still scratching my head over one of mr.french's play's versus jersey. Dribbling around for 15 seconds, passing up an open jumper and giving the ball to duncan with his back to the basket with one second left basically giving timmy no chance, what the fuuck!

Here's to that crappola of a play not happening again tonight.

Re: Game Thread #60- vs Indiana Pacers
a great win!!! not too many might think that on the surface, but most of our regulars were able to get some big time rest ahead of the tough game in denver and two more hard ones coming right back up.  whoever does the recap should definitely have the super bon bon be in the top 3 stars. he came in firing (as usual).

Re: Game Thread #60- vs Indiana Pacers
I think they went with "Los Spurs" since all they had to do was add "Los" on a regular home jersey. It was a little off putting they did not use full Spanish(Espuelas has a u for the spur icon)but it's still pretty cool. That and Espuelas is feminine...

That said, I want one of those Jerseys..
