Game Thread #70 - at Dallas

An noon central tipoff.  This should be a great game.  Both teams are getting desperate.

Linix129 is on the recap.

Stampler is live-blogging the game if he can get up early enough to get to his mom's.  ???

Timmy hates the early games and always sucks for them.

This reminds me of the '06 playoffs where the Spurs opened the second round by hosting the Mavs for a Sunday nooner after playing the Kings on Friday night.  Of course, in '06 the Kings game was in Sacramento.

Update [2008-3-23 11:38:58 by AusTechSpur]: This is NOT the front end of another back-to-back. Thanks to r21x for the correction.

this march schedule is viscous. it's the hardest the spurs have ever had.

i wonder if mark cuban is going to excuse avery and ask jason kidd to be player/coach at halftime?

Or if Avery'll just take Jason Kidd out of the game and make himself the starting point guard. You know he wants to.

Re: Game Thread #70 - at Dallas
Greetings from Foster City, CA everyone. Christ it's early. And bright as hell. I'm not used to getting up at this hour on a Sunday unless my Iggles are prominently involved, and even then, I grouse about it.

Our upcoming contest with the hated Mavericks is being billed on espn.com as "The Rest of the West" (ha, ha, clever) and one gets the distinct impression that the folks over at the WWL in Bristol and quite possibly the Disney execs as well are less than thrilled with the records of the two clubs, especially us.

"It's not bad enough you guys are ratings death every god damn year, but we still schedule you, every once in a while, because it is our contractual obligation to show THE MOTHERFUCKING DEFENDING CHAMPS, so the least you guys could do, would be, you know, to win the occasional game against a +.500 team."

Sorry ABC. I'm sorry you scheduled a so-so matchup between the 6th and 7th seeds and denied our nation their 48th view of the woebegone Miami Heat. A thousand apologies.

Anyway, I think this will be a hell of a match-up. Just as these two teams were eerily similar when they were contenders, now they're eerily similar as would-be contenders. Both teams desperately need a few "quality" wins to feel legitimate, especially the Mavs. If they don't win today, at home against their dreaded rivals, stick a fork in 'em, they're done.

As loathe as I am to admit it, the teams do have a few other similarities. Their leading scorers are floppin' foreign whiteboys. Their coaches are, in different moments, either outright humorless, or sarcastic, gallows-humor narcissists who preach and demand defense out of personnel not necessarily suited for the task.

And both, BOTH, have goddamn annoying owners. Cuban, of course, by now it should be obvious, is hellbent on being recognized as the biggest self-important douchebag since Henry VIII. (I liked "The Other Boleyn Girl" btw, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, meow) His blogger boycott, patently hypocritical, ridiculous, and arrogant is right out of the Bush Administration playbook and even the sycchophants at Blogmaverick.com are starting to turn on their master.

Meanwhile, our guy, that lovable cur Peter Holt, isn't really unlikable or anything. He just frustrates his fan base with his frugality. Luis Scola on the Rox? That's Peter Holt's doing. Beno Udrih on the Kings? Holt again. Having to make do with the decomposing remains of RoHo and Findog instead of trying to defend our title with 20-somethings who could perhaps, maybe, I don't know, play? You guessed it.

Cuban, asshole that he is, at least spends money. It'd be nice to have an owner who had a little more net worth, yet wasn't a complete public embarrassment and signpost for bad karma. Is one out there?

C'mon Oprah, buy our Spurs.

Finley passes up an open three for a contested two, as only he can, Tim and Tony are now 1-10 and Duncan also has mixed in a couple turnovers. Lovely.

Fortunately Dallas hasn't done much either.

Manu bricked a lay-up. Might have been hacked by his reaction. Oh wait, that's always his reaction.

14-13 Dallas with under three mins to go in the 1st as we head into another commercial.

Kurt Thomas has checked in, so we're big again. But Dallas isn't. Let's see what happens. I'm guessing Tim won't be on the floor when we return and Tony might not be either.

Re: Game Thread #70 - at Dallas
No offensive floor leader for the Spurs.

Nobody setting up the offense.

Nobody looking for mismatches and the hot player.

Just one screen and roll after another mixed in with a Parker/Ginobili one on one drive.

Spacing is all wrong...shooters are standing on the 3 point line instead of 2 steps behind it when making the entry pass.

Spurs have no hops. Can any Spur dunk the ball besides Manu and Tim? We are not only the oldest team in the association, but the most dead legged as well.

Kurt is not making much of an impact, as I predicted when he was signed. Hits an occasional jumper and blows many close shots.

The Spurs second team is a nightmare on the offensive end.

Missing wide open shots with nobody around you is an unforgivable crime. Players missing a shot with nobody within 10 feet of them should fined and then spend a couple days in a Texas State Prison isolation cell.

Re: Game Thread #70 - at Dallas
It is hard to believe that Duncan was known as the big fundamental earlier in his career. Every shot he takes is falling away from the basket. Every pass he makes is flat and easily read.

I get the feeling the Mavs know they are done. I just don't feel any big energy coming from them. It's like they have realized the J Kidd deal just didn't work and that is that.

Pop's comments earlier were typical Pop. Cocky and prickish. He has to answer to the family for what he is doing. Drop the gun, bring the canoli...

Re: Game Thread #70 - at Dallas
We need to keep forcing the Mavs to shoot jumpers and hope they miss, and Manu has to force the issue, going inside, drawing fouls, maybe passing to Timmy for easy (maybe) lay-ups.

Parker hasn't started the half well at all, unfortunately. 0-3 and 4-15 for the game, like Harris never left. It should not be this hard for him.

And Duncan struggling this badly against Dirk and Dampier? For shame.

Another and-one for Timmy and Dirk is hurt after a tussle with Udoka.

Udoka looks like somebody you really don't want to fuck with, imo. But it wasn't anything intentional. He hurt his knee blocking Udoka's lay-up attempt.

Tim got the rebound and the score off the confusion. We're up one now, in the midst of a 13-0 run, and Timmy still has a free throw.

Dirk's return to the game meanwhile, looks dubious.

Re: Game Thread #70 - at Dallas
It was poetic justice that the game was iced when Manu stole the ball from Stackass by tipping it to Bruce. Wish they would have shown Stack's reaction that got him tossed. Yeah, if Bruce got suspended for what he did to Paul, then Stack should be suspended at least one game for his flagrant takedown and fist in face on Manu. Hope Pop pushes for that.

Nice to know your team can shoot like drunken sailors and win on the road. The defense was a beast.

And Jerry Stackhouse needs to understand that coming from a country where they kidnap rich people and soccer games end in riots, Ginobili isn't going to be intimidated by some washed-up swingman with thug tendencies.

Re: Game Thread #70 - at Dallas
Apparently, Stackass ain't none too bright. Remember last game, when the Mavs mugged and thugged Manu? Stackass specifically tried to shove an elbow thru his throat. Manu's reaction: he kicked their ass to the tune of 37 points, with TD out of the lineup. In fact, Bill Land used the analogy of the classic Mel Brooks' movie, Blazing Saddles, when the Waco Kid (Gene Wilder) tells the new sheriff (Cleavon Little) not to use his guns against Mango (Alex Karras), "...cause you'll just make him angry." Piss off Manu and this is what you get. Some morons never learn.

Great win by the Spurs! I also hope Dirk is all right, I actually like Dirk, there are a ton more Mavs I hate more than Dirk. Howard, Stackhouse, and Terry and I loathe Avery too! And I don't even want to start on Cuban.

I wish Dirk and Kidd the best!

we have a little nice winning streak and now I think we might be all right as soon as we get Barry back..which means less of Finley!.

Re: Game Thread #70 - at Dallas
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually feel bad for Dirk.  It's not like he's a mentally-imbalanced thug like Stackhouse or a little dingleberry with a head shaped like a bowling ball  like Terry.

To me, Dirk's failures of the past few years have actually given him a human side, and after what happened to him the past couple of years, for him to not even make the playoffs this year would seem to be an overly cruel twist of fate.

Not to mention it's much more satisfying to beat these guys when they're at full-strength.
