Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver

7:30 PM SA - 10:30 PM ARG

Star-divide

   43-19 ............................................. 37-25

Streak:
     2 L ................................................. 1 L

Home record:
    26-5 ................................................ 25-7

Road record:
    17-14 .............................................. 12-18

Last 10:
     8-2 ................................................. 5-5

----------------------------------------------

(Sort of) Interesting facts:

► Past encounters:

This season they've met three times:
   → 15/Dec/07 - SA 102 | DEN 91
   → 03/Jan/08 - DEN 80 | SA 77
   → 07/Mar/08 - DEN 109 | SA 96

► The Nuggets, after beating the Spurs on Friday, were crushed by the Jazz 132-105 in Utah. I'm trying not to draw any conclusions from that fact.

► The Spurs, after losing to the Nuggets on Friday, were defeated 91-87 by Shaq "Kamikaze"'s Suns. I love it when we make a corpse look good. How come no one managed to draw a foul from Stoudamire and Shaq when both had 5 with 6 minutes on the clock?

► I'm too depressed to give useful information.

► Next games for the Spurs:
   → Vs. Denver - Monday 10/Mar - TODAY
   → @ New Orleans - Wednesday 12/Mar
   → @ Detroit - Friday 14/Mar
   → @ Philadelphia - Saturday 15/Mar
   → Vs. Boston - Monday 17/Mar

----------------------------------------------

Probable starting lineup:

T. Parker    M. Ginobili     B. Bowen     T. Duncan    K. Thomas
 P. Guard       S. Guard       S. Forward     P. Forward       Center
 18.3 PPG       20.7 PPG         5.8 PPG        19.7 PPG        4.4 PPG
  3.1 RPG        5.0 RPG          2.8 RPG        11.5 RPG        5.8 RPG
  5.8 APG        4.5 APG          1.2 APG         3.1 APG         0.5 APG

Spurs are going to bounce back and win this one. I don't want to predict the score considering we have Finley on our team!

Finley "busts out" w/12 big pts, and at least 2 of the Big Three will score 20+.

Man I would hate to be a thugget tonight.  Actually, I would hate being a thugget or thugget fan ANY night, but tonight is especially going to be bad for them.

*Finley is not going to destroy us tonight.
*Parker is going to be above average (>6 turnovers).
*Mt. Udoka will erupt with a FF or TF tonight.
*Lord Manu's line- 34/9/7

Playoff bound SPURS- 104
Playoff hopeful thuggets- 89

I don't know. He should learn from Carmela, his toughness is unmatched by anyone else in the NBA. Punching someone and then backpedaling...Man. if that ain't tough I don't what is.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
No kidding.  Know what else is tough?  Exiting the playoffs every year in the first round.  Your dunks are cool though, keep those up.  You're fun to watch all the way until May, when you guys vacation in Mexico.  Maybe this year you'll win one more than the customary... one.  Wait, my bad.  You won't be making the playoffs this year.

Doug Moe would roll over in his grave if he saw how badly your team played basketball.

The real question is why A.I. always flops but does not get called out for it like Manu. is it just because A.I. is so small?

a dunk by the super bon bon is kinda like hitting a grand slam in baseball or blocking a punt in football.  your team seldom loses when that happens.

You may be right but Parker is gonna have to step it up NOW as we have only 20 games left and most are with excellent teams.  Not to mention the playoffs -- IF we make it (the way we're playing lately, I'm not so sure)!!!!!  We need the "old" Tony Parker for us to REPEAT !!

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
I find it interesting that they let Anthony Carter body Ginobili on this last possession. Not once, but twice at the 3-point line with no foul call. If that was Iverson instead of Gino, they would have called at least two fouls.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
A loss would be devastating tonight. A loss coupled with a Rockets win, would give the Rockets 1st place in the division and 2nd in the West.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
So the Nuggets can throw elbows and not get a foul called against them, and the Spurs barely brush someone and it's an automatic foul? Some home court advantage.

And a bad call the Spurs way (the foul on Martin against Parker). The refs are really, really struggling right now. It's like they aren't ready for the intensity to pick up. They have no consistency and the players can't figure out what is a foul.

so...this is how its gonna be the rest of the way folks.  everyone is gonna put up their A game everynight.  spurs better be ready to do the same. and this was from the 9th place team. the close out today was exactly what the spurs did not do yesterday.

was it just me, or does kenyon martin view every call against him as an opportunity to pose?

also - did anyone else catch the arena folks cue the spurs victory song a smidge too early? good thing the game was already in hand.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
Good call, bones.

The lady was frustrated at me tonight because she said, "Yesterday you were pissed and quiet all afternoon b/c they lost.  Tonight you're still quiet and distant and they WON.  What gives?!"

After I reminded her not to speak again unless prompted, I explained that yes, I'm happy to win regardless of the situation.  But wins like these aren't convincing to me. And wins like these (as you said, laying it all out and scraping by a 9th place poser) only pacify my concerns temporarily.  I'm content and happy with the W; but need to see more true SPURS bball before feeling great.

We need a BIG win this week, against a real team.  I'll feel more complete peace and faith then.

And yes, KMart is a moron.  He's awesome at dunking and screaming, awesome at headbands and tattoos, and awesome at making Shawn Marion re-evaluate his own shooting style; but not much more.

heh.  Love the comment.  K'Mart's always been more sizzle than steak - he's actually better now than he was a few years ago before the injuries - he hit a five footer tonight, which is really extending his range from what it used to be back in NJ.

chaos... panic... pandemonium... my work here is done.

i felt pretty badly about the game for most of it. but i liked how they closed it out. that's what i'm used to with the spurs - if it's close they'll pull it out. i don't mind a few more of those peppered in with a bunch of 40 point blowouts and a 16-3 finish.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
My problem with this whole "everybody bring their A game" mentality, even though its true, is that at this point the Spurs collectively don't know what form (i.e. roster) their A game comes in. Is Manu a starter or a super-sub? Is Mighty Mouse the second string point or Vaughn? How many minutes do we give Horry? What is the proper Udoka/Bowen/Finely/Barry balance at the 3? Christ, tonight we played Bonner for 15 minutes! We aren't gonna do that come playoff time. A W is a W, and that's great, and its great to see us close out a game after the disappointing show that we gave during the last 3 minutes of the game in PHX, but I am gonna be anxious until I know exactly what manifestation we are gonna to assume come may.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
To reiterate my first and maybe subsequently lost point, the "everybody needs to bring their A game" is true. In order to answer all the questions I posed we need to know who is ready to repeat and who isn't. I'm ready to repeat but I'm 5'9" and have bad court vision and an inconsistent jumper so I can't help us. Bones is right, this is the way its gonna be from now on.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
Duncan: Whatever the argument is about Timmeh being a center and not a power forward should be put to rest now. He is having monster trouble with double teams. He needs a true center to take the pressure of him, provide an easy target to pass out of the double teams to (high-low type pass), establish a twin towers shot blocking look locking down both baselines and needs to establish himself in the low post. Needs to be much more decisive. He is posting way to far out and allowing the double team to come  hard at him. Tim should never be jacking around above the free throw line. Suffering with small ball.

Parker: Not near as aggresive as he needs to be. Still takes very inappropriate jump shots. Seems they are always at the worst time possible. Needs to attack at every opportunity in the open court. Today's young players are big strong guys that can take the ball to the hole (JR Smith, Carmelo, Labron, Durant, etc...). However, they don't have good fundamentals or smarts and they can not defend well in the open court. Made some horrible passes, but got the final one to Thomas for the money shot. Look at the frenchman's dribble. When he is pounding the ball up and down there is almost an electricity going threw him and he is going to be penetrating and pushing it in the open court, but when he is just dribbling around lathargically, it is a signal that he is not going to be aggresive.

Manu: His shooting was frightningly bad. When he is bad, he is way bad. World B. Free bad. Made great passes, but made some horrible passes that led to slam dunk break aways. Unforgivable. Needs to run within the offense. His wild isolation plays bog down the offense and scatter the whole offensive game plan. He does his best work off the ball, not isolating. Just pass the ball around Manu, cut, rub off screens and do your thing.

Pop: His not calling time outs is baffeling. The Phil Jackson approach only works if you have Mike Jordan on your team, otherwise, call a fucking time out when the other team appears to get on a run or your team is letting guys go straight to the rim with the matador defense. Maybe he is attempting to confuse his fellow coaches by just sitting stone faced on the bench now, then in the playoffs, he will suddenly start making his players pay for thier mistakes and take appropriate time outs. Or he could be just drunk. Small ball sucks the sweat off a dead man's balls. It violates every tenant of good basketball. Protecting the rim, the paint, pushing opposing offenses out, discouraging players from driving the lane, protecting defensive rebounds, getting the other teams big men in foul troulble, tiring the other big men out and wreaking havoc with offensive rebounds. The Timmeh Thomas combo is shakey at best, but better than Tim and 4 gaurds.

Overall, the turnovers have been horrific. Do the Spurs even practice plays any more? Who is the floor general? Does anyone know when and where to pass the ball into Timmeh? Udoka sure doesn't. Tony starts dribbling around on the opposite side of the court? WTF? Manu with his wild ass drives often at innapropriate times.

Finally, keep the hook ready for Finley and watch his minutes. He is a spot up jumper and that is it.

If we lose straight up, that I can handle, but the careless turnovers, lack of hustle, missing layups, not protecting the rim, that I can not forgive. We just scrapped by against a team with a star player with a broken finger and another star player leaving the court every quarter to have his head examined for concussions. Not a good sign. We need to step it up, concentrate more and be more disciplined.

Ditto x15.  Can you just go ahead and write this recap?  Or post this with some useless stats included AS the recap?  I'm feeling rested after your eloquent words.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
Damn. I didn't realize we sucked this badly.

We really need to make some trades in the Summer. Obviously, we have no chance when Manu's passes are instant dunks for the opponents, Tony can't dribble properly and Timmy can't fight through a double team.

And Pop, dude, wake up already. You Phil Jackson-wannabe.

Greetings one and all from Brisbane.
All I can do is read the play-by-plays and bite my nails. I reckon a title run will depend on the role players stepping up consistently, and Michael Finley reverting to his former self.

Go Spurs Go...please?

Welcome, mick.  Stop reading just play-by-plays.  Manu's army at PTR has a fierce warrior named LatinD that gracefully posts links to live streamed SPURS games.  Join the party for real.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
Good grief, I am missing something, I thought the Spurs won tonight. Every game isn't going to be a mosaic. Obviously there are mistakes being made every game, but no team is ever going to play a perfect game and no coach is going to coach a perfect game. Personally, I am more focused on the rotation right now. I can't say this enough. Robert Horry has to be shut down for the rest of the season, and that includes the playoffs. He hasn't made a meaningful contribution all season. Bonner provided a spark tonight and that should boost his confidence. Pop screwed up with Nick Van Exel 2 seasons ago, and I am afraid he is going to make the same mistake with Horry. For all the big shots he has made in his career, he has never been anything more than a marginal role player, especially the last 5-6 seasons. Seriously though my fellow Spur fans, enjoy the rest of the season because it's going to be a fun ride and there is going to be plenty of good basketball to take in over the next 3 months.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
Okay, gonna try to be serious here.  I agree with what you're saying, but it's not about the expectation of perfection.  It's about understanding what it takes to win championships; and the recognition that with the West the way it is and the top of the East playing so well, we will have to be MUCH MUCH better to compete for a repeat.  I'm happy with the W, no doubt, but I feel no joy in seeing consistant- poor defensive rotations, multiple stupid turnovers, identity confusion (Finley still believing that he has a pulse and should be hoisting 20- footers repeatedly), and such consistant inconsistency in our shooting.  Pop's allowed to make poor decisions, but not the same ones several times each game.  All of these issues require repair very soon, or most of us know what awaits in the postseason.  Squeaking by vs. a playoff bubble team by a few at home is NOT encouraging; but yes, there's no reason to jump off the bridge yet.  There's still plenty of time, and this situation is not unknown or new to the SPURS.  But over the next 2 weeks I look for us to be smoother and more polished and ready for the playoffs, that's for sure.

You're right on on Horry and Bonner.  Horry needs to be put out to pasture.  We have to ask at this point, is even the possibility of hitting one game winner sooner or later worth the liability he's become?  And Bonner's 'boost' will end up being a waste when/if he doesn't suit up in the next week.

Right on though, enjoy this time.  We'll have no excuses if this year doesn't come to fruition (See: the opposite of 'Phoenix Suns'), and we'll see some great games.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
Okay, since everyone else seems to be peeing in the victory punch today, I'm going to try and be a bit more positive. First, Denver played about as well as they can play (Smith, 9-13, Carter, 4-7, KM, 7-15) and they didn't even give up (check out what they did against the Jazz the night after they beat us, they didn't even show up). I know it's a cliche at this point, but teams really do push it hard when they play us. Second, I think the starting line-up of TP, TD, Manu, KT, and BB is pretty fucking strong. We started and finished the game pretty damn well with that line-up. Yes, our bench is still inconsistent, but there is some punch there when we need it (not counting Horry nor, at least until he proves different, Midge). Yes, even Fin with his horrid defense, occasionally gets hot and lights it up. But then, Ime has been inconsistent too. And poor old Fab ... he works his ass off but god, every fucking call goes against him. I think if he farts on someone he gets the foul call. Shit. Anyway, long story short, I think our starting five is as good as anyone (with Manu starting). And even when Pop starts Fin, I think TP (when he plays to potential, which is still in fits and starts), TD, BB (he's even hitting some shots now, and not just from the corner) and KT can keep us in any game until Manu comes off the bench, and we know he'll be there at the close. A key component is KT. He lit it up against the Suns until we stopped running the P&R with him. He's got a damn good shot from 15' to 17' and most bigs won't come out to guard him. Once we learn how to consistently integrate that piece into our overall offense, I think we'll be hard to stop, or at least I hope so.

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
Do people forget that this was back to back game? And the Spurs 4 game in 5 nights!

Also, I don't care what Denver's record is with AI and Carmela and Camby the thugs are for real!

Good gritty win, the only Spurs player that concerns me is Finley but that shouldn't a huge concern when Barry returns to the team!

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
So hilarious...

Why are there sites like 'firegeorgekarl.com?'  Why do so many consider him an overrated classless clown who will never win in the postseason?

From the SA E-N this morning:
George Karl, after last nights game- "We were fighting against a lot of calls, and we needed calls all night long," he said afterward. "I told the team during halftime that we aren't the team that gets calls in this building."

Can you hear the violin?
When's the last time you heard Pop bitch about the calls after a game?  Yeah, it'll happen once a year, but this guy does this EVERY TWO DAYS!!!

Just thought it was funny

Re: Game Thread #63 - Vs. Denver
gota win some ugly guys.  it was denver that brought their A game and the spurs won anyway.  in some ways, we should find ourselves very happy by the outcome. no question that the spurs have several things to work on, but.....

denver got their usual production from AI and melo (and maybe then some).  even my main man martin did have a few big buckets and nugs found a serious X factor with smith.  canyou imagine that talent that kid would be if he had half a head on his shoulders? whoa.  too bad that he's in the perfect place to breed the type of ball that will get you a first round exit from the playoffs - or worse. denver played hanrd and they played with desperation.  the same kind of thing that phoenix did on sunday.

the difference between those two teams and the spurs is that they dont display that kind of game day in and day out.  we see that in the play-off series we have played against these teams.

spurs big 3 will be fine.  i have no worries aboutthem other than injury.  KT has seemed to fit in rather quick, but midge has taken a step back in the recent play-off stlye games and that is somewhat of a concern.  role players will definitely need to step up.  right or wrong, good or bad, we will need some production from the likes of fin, bowen, udoka, midge, roho, bones and probably even a little JV to do it again.  if some of those guys do the job one night and the others the next, we are right there. the good news is that these guys are all pros who know what it takes...the bad news; well the bad news is that not many of them would find such minutes on other NBA rosters.  let's just say it that way.

i'm not about to talk down any win at this point of the season.  everybody is dialed up to either get in or improve their spot.  sadly, its going to be hard on our internal organs to keep watching games liek this from now until hopefully june, but get used to it.  it is here; it is now.
