Game Thread # 56 -- vs. Dallas

I'm looking forward to this game for the following reasons:

  1.  It's on TNT.  This means people in Austin will actually be able to watch the game!
  2.  It's on TNT.  This means we'll get to hear Charles Barkley talk about Manu Ginobili.  Speaking of, even though it's years old, I had never seen this clip until recently.  Magic's bit at the end is my favorite:
"Who you seen dunk like this man right here?... on somebody."

  1.  It's a big game against a team easy to dislike.  We're 1 game up on the Mavs and the season series is tied 1-1.
  2.  Jason Kidd vs. Tony Parker.  Tony should shred him despite Kidd being extra-motivated given Tony's comments on the trade:
"To be honest with you, I'm really happy for that trade. Diop was doing a good job on us. And Devin Harris, most of the time, he played good against us. So I thought it would be good for us. No disrespect to Jason Kidd, he's a great point guard, but those guys that left always gave us trouble."

"No disrespect to Jason Kidd, but he sucks balls."

5.  Manu Ginobili on national television.  Here's his chance to unveil his true eroticism to the world.  I'm betting he plays the game in a negligee.

In celebration of this momentous occasion I will be live blogging the game.  Which just means I'll be watching live and posting a bunch of comments (in this here thread).  Feel free to join in everybody.  You too, stampler!

As much as I'd like to participate, I will be watching the game at Kezar Pub in San Francisco along with Manolis, the Spurs Dynasty fellas, and Amanda.

I may send along a thought or three by way of text message on the phone and you can relay it to the masses if you so desire. So have your phone by you, alright homes?

Internet vs. Sex vs. Internet vs. Sex...
Hmmm... does it seem to anyone else that Stampler is getting a little uppity?  Now that he's finally met someone as lonely and desperate as himself, he's too good to post recaps?
Is that all it takes for you to turn your back on Spurs game night?  One little whiff of feminine pheromones drifts by, and you pad away from us with nary a look back?

Well, let me ask you something, Stampezee.

Exactly where was Amanda when Manu almost dropped 50 on the Suns during the 2005 playoffs?  Or when Derek Fisher hit the 0.4 shot, was Amanda there to console you?  Or when Frenchie finally stepped through his playoff jitters last year, was Amanda anywhere around to share that moment with you?

I. Think. Not.

While you're stocking up on boner pills and other degenerate paraphernalia, some of us here still remember that there's a big, wild, and untamed internet out there, and it's up to us, and us alone, to keep this little corner of it safe for fans like us.  Yes, us - fans with that rare combination of cynicism, insight, wit, style, and that strange twisted quirk of fate which makes us choose the Spurs of all teams, which makes PoundingTheRock the site that it is today.
And yes, sometimes that means sacrifice.  Sometimes that means making tough choices.  Yes, there may be a hot chick in the other room just waiting to have sex with you, but somewhere on this site there is a post which simply requires a witty rejoinder - and it's up to YOU to find it, and finish off that repartee with the kind of flourish that only AaronStampler can pull off.

But, fine.  Go have really hot sex somewhere else.  See if I care.  But soon, sometime soon, while you're in some numb post-coital haze, Manu WILL do something incredible, and you will have missed it forever.

Do you really want to live with that kind of regret?

chaos... panic... pandemonium... my work here is done.

Re: Internet vs. Sex vs. Internet vs. Sex...
You have a much stronger work ethic than me. This has clearly been established already. The less we enlighten the PtR community with tales of our pathetic history with the fairer gender, the better.

And yes, I realize I'm the one who is always guilty of that and not you, so shut up.

P.S. I'm sorry the trade deadline came and went with no Manu for Kevin Martin swap. Hopefully we can still put together a respectable playoff run anyway.

Re: Game Thread # 56 -- vs. Dallas
Matthew, thanks so much for putting up that clip - what a treat! How ironic that even as Manu sat there among NBA legends, Kenny Smith's "Foreign Legion" list [granted it was from some time ago] typifies the lack of respect toward Manu that continues even today. I wonder where Kenny would rank Manu if he did the list today - judging from his telling expression after the Magic comment, Manu would probably be at the top of the list. How can anyone miss Ginobili's genius?

This game couldn't possibly top the last one, regardless of the final score. I just hope for a win , not only because I hate the Mavs, but because it would really make them second-guess their Kidd trade if Parker kills him all night long.

Re: Game Thread # 56 -- vs. Dallas
They keep referring to him as "European" which is just damn ignorant. I can't believe he never corrected them.

Then again, maybe that's the answer to why he's never been back on the show. Maybe he thinks Kenny and Magic should do a little more research instead of just assuming white = European.

Still, it'd be neat to see him on there again. I mean, he wasn't really a "star" the first time he was on the show, he was still an up & coming player, and his English is way better now.

yeah what's up with that european business? jeez. these guys are supposed to be professionals who should at least know a couple of facts.

i must admit that i will call gino the "italian assassin" from time to time because of a drunken comment made once by the father of my buddies (last name: rizzi). dude has no idea about the NBA, but belted it out based on his last name and the fact that manu was in the middle of going off on the suns in that 2005 game.

Look For Me On TNT! ;)
DAL: 98
SA: 105

I will also be attending tomorrow's epic showdown at the AT&T Center! For my sake, I hope the result is the same as the December 5th game I went to, so I don't have to hear the continuous badgering from my friend if Dallas wins. Basically, anytime the Mavericks come to San Antonio, my boy Trace (the obnoxious Dallas fan) and I HAVE to be at the game. I'll undoubtedly wear my Duncan jersey and he'll come attired in that hideous #41 Nowitzki abomination. Trace got heckled pretty good as we left the arena last time, but he handled it well.

The problem I have is that there seems to be more and more Mavs' fans showing up at the Spurs' home games. And last year when I went up to Dallas to watch the Spurs' season opener, I could have counted the number of Spurs fan in attendance on one hand! Thankfully, San Antonio won that game, but the Mavs fans were relentlessly screaming and swearing at me. The Spurs/Mavs rivalry is the best in the NBA, has been over the last 4 or 5 years, but Dallas fans have to be the rudest, most belligerent, whining, sore losers in the league!

As much as everyone wants Manu to come up big on national television, I'm thinking Tony ends up being the star, finishing with 25 pts and 6 ast while Kidd goes 3-for-11 from the field with 6 TOs.

You could say the same thing about the SAS-PHX rivalry: is it the best in the NBA? Also the same thing about the PHX fans: "the rudest, most belligerent, whining, sore losers in the league!"

Re: Game Thread # 56 -- vs. Dallas
The Mavs are the most despicable team in the association. A Spurs victory would really put them on the edge of a cliff. For me, the most enjoyable moment of the season comes when

-The camera zooms in on the Cube as the Mavs are down 20 in the elimination game of the second/third/FIRST round of the playoffs and he is pouting like bitch.

Dallas is a cocaine addicted, dirty, smutty, arrogant, tainted city.

Please for the love of all that is holy, clean up your city. You have porn stores that are bigger than North Star Mall and you have more homeless people than we have people.

There are a whole bunch of a lot of reasons to be excited about this game.  Manu is playing must-see basketball right now.  Tim, is quietly destroying fools, and man, I just really want to see Tony lay the hammer down on JKidd.  Not only that, but I am looking forward to watching another game featuring Mr. Big Nasty himself... Today on a local radio station here in socal they were tossing around 4 guys for MVP.  Kobe, of course since it's a LA station, KG, Chris Paul and yep you guessed it Manu!  It never even crossed my mind that Manu would be an MVP candidate since he is so underrated.  I was wondering... has anyone EVER been MVP and not been on the allstar team?

i dont think that this match-up is as big as most. new guys are still trying to find their way on both squads, so both teams could look a little different in a couple of months.

i'm not calling it a giant preview of things to come just yet, but i do agree with ClintonsCigar that a loss here is big to dallas, particulalry if it is a boat racer.

either way, this game should mean more to dallas than san antonio - given that they sunk their fortune into a guy that cant keep frenchy out of the lane. we'll see if it does.

Re: Game Thread # 56 -- vs. Dallas
Mavs-Spurs coinciding with a Phil Helmuth-Phil Ivey WPT final table matchup in the L.A. WPT tournament at 5pm today, for any other possible poker addicts in here.  Both looking for their 1st WPT bracelet.

http://www.cardplayer.com/tournaments/live_updates/13949/18494
THE FINAL SIX
Ivey continued his amazing streak of turning WPT money finishes into WPT final tables, and sets the record with his eighth final table. Ivey is in a strong position with the chip lead, but Hellmuth has a shot at the title himself in third place. Nam Le is the short stack, but he is one double up away from becoming a serious threat. Here are the official counts:

Seat 1 - Quinn Do - 1,450,000
Seat 2 - Nam Le - 1,180,000
Seat 3 - Phil Hellmuth - 2,380,000
Seat 4 - Phil Ivey - 4,100,000
Seat 5 - Charles "Woody" Moore - 1,510,000
Seat 6 - Scott "r_a_y" Montgomery - 2,680,000

First prize is $1,596,100, but there's much more on the line than that. Nam Le is looking to join the elite club of multiple WPT winners, and Hellmuth's claim to be the best in the world is hard to back up without a single WPT title (or a million-dollar victory of any kind). As for Ivey, in seven previous visits to the final table, he's come up short. At what point does a losing streak get labeled by the media as a curse?

The WPT final table is scheduled to start at 5:00 pm PT. Return to WorldPokerTour.com for live hand-by-hand coverage of every check, bet, call, raise, and fold. This is a must-watch poker tournament if there ever was one.

Re: Game Thread # 56 -- vs. Dallas
Just guessing, and with little media comment from the SPURS on this up to this point (unless I just missed it), Tony's playing at maybe 25%.  Is it just me or does he just not have that extra step and seemingly more cautious about banging into the lane?

The sad thing if you're a mavwreck right now?  SPURS playing horrendously, poor shooting, poor defensive rotations, you're playing great and shooting fairly well......and it's tied at half.  We find our rhythm and wake up, and this is over in the third.

Dallas still feeling good about that Kidd trade?!!  Harris would be destroying Tony right now.  Bring on the playoffs, we'd beat dallas in five as they look now.
