Game Thread # 35 -- vs. Minnesota

I've said some dumb things on this (or other incarnations of this) blog.  For example, back in 2005:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Ray has to shoot more because he's the focal point of the offense. Ray's job is to score. Ray has to take those tough three pointers. Defenses key on him. Blah blah blah. I bite my thumb at that shit. Every basketball player's job is to help the team win. And maybe if Ray was as concerned about winning as he was his next contract (or next manicure) he wouldn't take some of those horrible shots. Maybe he would notice that Radmanovic and Lewis are better 3P shooters than him. Or that Rashard Lewis is actually a better offensive player than he is. Or that he's only 3rd on the team in +/- (which is especially sad considering his backup is Flip Fucking Murray).

My bad.  Then there's that other thing that Stampler never lets me forget.  Well Stampler, it's pay back time.  I'm not sure I could ever top this:

Unless the Celtics win a ring in the next three or four years, they will be lambasted by basketball historians for the Garnett-Jefferson trade. Jefferson is already the superior offensive player (Duncan couldn't do much with him) and is poised to be one of the dominant power forwards in this league for another decade. Trading just the two of them straight up would've been an even deal, but Boston had to throw in a bunch of other guys to make the cap numbers work. The Celtics will regret giving up the 1st round picks though.

Wow.  Just wow.  I think you're pretty ok neato stampler, but your Kevin Garnett bias manages to eclipse my Ray Allen bias by a wide margin.  He's been lambasted for never taking his team to the finals despite never having a team good enough to make the finals.  My God, do you realize before this year he's never played with a teammate as good as Ray Allen?  Ray fucking Allen, Mr. One Dimensional Volume Scorer Extraordinaire!

Now Minnesota is 5-30 and on pace to have the worst season in recent NBA history and the Celtics are on the exact other end of the spectrum.  But Garnett doesn't take the shot at the end of the games, so fuck him, right?  Dude, like, whatever.

The bleeding finally stops tonight, and hopefully it will be the start of a nice little streak...

Spurs 100
Wolves 82

Imagine what'd happen to the Celtics if Garnett got injured? Regardless of what Big Baby's been up to, I still don't buy that "it seems the supporting cast at Boston wasn't so bad after all" angle everyone's pushing right now. They're a thin team, and their starters play a lot of minutes.

And Jefferson's a good player.

I think we at least have to win the next three to regain some confidence. And what better way to start than the horrible horrible Wolves? If we lose this one though, I'm officially freaking out. FSM, this is the time prove your greatness, may you touch the Spurs with your noodly appendage.

Stamplers is right Jeffersen is the better player offensive he reminds me of a black kevin mccale.Garnet had plenty of great teammates on timber wolves like marbarry, gugliatta, spreewell, cassel, terrell brandon. All those players really good.Stapmlers don't worry I got your back bro!!!!!!

Re: Game Thread # 35 -- vs. Minnesota
You know what Powell? I know it sounds stupid, but they've got to win a ring to prove me wrong. It don't mean a thing if you ain't got that ring doo wop doo wop doo wop.

As far as I'm concerned basketball-wise you can't prove it's a great trade unless Boston wins the ring with it.

I think Jefferson-Allen-Pierce etc. would've been a pretty decent team too. More offensive less defensive maybe, but a playoff team nonetheless.

If Garnett goes ringless in Boston, and Jefferson still has seven more good years in him by the time KG hangs it up, it'll look bad.

P.S. Somebody posted your "I'm not happy with Pop" post on Spurstalk and TimVP and the gang are tearing you a new one. PtR is officially recognized there now, I guess, although no one is admitting to being a fan of it on the record.

Ooh ooh ooh!!!!  Has somebody said something mindlessly trite and finished it off with "'nuff said" yet????  'Cause that's my favorite part.

I'm not going to bother reading their thoughts because:

A)  I don't give a shit.
B)  They're pretty much all morans and I am like way smrter than them when it comes to the Spurs.  And everything else, for that matter.

And yes, you can post that over there.

Re: Game Thread # 35 -- vs. Minnesota
By the way, one of the reasons Minny is 5-30 or whatever is because Boston traded all their young guys over to them in the deal. The team is Al Jefferson, Telfair, 'Toine, Madsen, and a bunch of 21 year olds.

Surround that same cast with Garnett and what's their record? 9-26? Congrats.

What's Boston's record with the same team but Jefferson for KG? 25-10.

This first season is the maximum chance for Boston to look great in this trade and Minny to look stupid. The rest of the way the Celtics will get worse and the T-Pups will improve with those 1st rounders and young players.

Dude.  You keep digging yourself a bigger hole.  You basically just said the addition of Ray Allen made the Celtics go from a 0.293 team (24-58 in 06-07) to a .714 team (25-10).

Just admit you're totally irrational when it comes to Kevin Garnett.  It's ok.  I feel the same way about Miranda Otto.

Re: Game Thread # 35 -- vs. Minnesota
What did Pierce play last season, like half the games? They were openly sitting him and tanking last year for the second half of the season in their Durant/Oden fever.

This whole Boston getting KG thing was just random luck. They could've gotten one of the top two picks and been mired in rebuilding mode like Seattle right now.

Boston pretty much threw their season last year for the draft lottery. They weren't nearly as bad as their record. Don't tell me a team with a healthy Pierce and Jefferson couldn't compete in a crappy Eastern conference.

Re: Game Thread # 35 -- vs. Minnesota
But yes, I am irrational when it comes to KG. I don't like him. I've explained my reasons why and it got you to fall in love with me, so there. The Pistons scare me a lot more than the Celtics for a potential Finals match-up, that's for sure. Then again, we're not looking too Finals-worthy ourselves these days. I just watched the Pistons game again. Oy vey, was that ugly. I'll post about it sometime, maybe tonight.

And yes you're right, the Spurstalk community are basically a horde of idiots. But they don't have the context of your post or anything. People at PtR know we occasionally bitch about Pop but it's not like we  want him shitcanned or anything. Over there they don't know where you're coming from, so you sound like some new-comer lunatic who's calling for his head. Pop is a sacred cow over there, and so is Tim for that matter so unless TimVP is the one to rip them, they cannot be ripped.

I'm with you.  Plus, the Pistons / Spurs would be boringer than shit.

EXACTLY.  I know they don't realize the context, but I don't think it's worth my time to clue them in.

A)  I don't care what they think.  Two years ago I would have, but others' opinions of my thoughts / writing on the Spurs no longer concerns me.  (Which may explain why my writing has sucked of late.)

B)  They want to disagree with me.  People enjoy disagreeing with others because it involves feeling like you're right.  I could give them a scientific proof of Pop's shortcomings and it wouldn't make a difference.

Remember, when the Cowboys traded Herschel Walker to the Vikes, everyone thought they were crazy too.
