What Are We Supposed to Be Witnessing Again?

Tonight was a perfect example of why sports announcers, especially the color guys, are totally pointless.  Because although this was blatantly obvious to anyone with half a brain, neither Mark Jackson or Van Gundy pointed out Mike Brown's pathetic coaching job.

It's one thing to be disorganized on offense.  NBA players are used to getting by on athleticism and aren't necessarily known for superior cognitive abilities, so implementing an offensive scheme can be difficult.  But the Cavs problem wasn't poor organization.  They just kept running the same stupid offense over and over and over again.

Question:  does someone set a pick for Lebron James before he gets on the bus?  Is he allowed to take a piss without going around a pick first?  Brown kept calling some form of a pick and roll despite the fact the Spurs were repeatedly doubling James, leading mostly to missed shots by his teammates along with 6 turnovers from "King" James.  I simply can't fathom why Brown didn't iso James at the top of the key, where he could have taken 18 foot pull up jumpers all day.

The Spurs are the best help defense team in the league by a wide margin and the Cavs kept playing right into their hands.  The only duo that can repeatedly have success running the pick and roll against the Spurs is Nash and Amare.  That's it.  End of list.  Lebron isn't the passer or ball handler that Nash is and Gooden, well, he isn't the shooter, player or personal stylist that Amare is.

Lebron isn't blameless in all this.  Why the hell didn't Lebron wave off the pick and roll?  This guy is unguardable one on one, right?  And Manu, for the 10 or so possessions he was guarding him, was giving him uncontested 20 footers.  You think Kobe passes those shots up?  Uh.  No.  He doesn't.

Twenty seconds later Pop yelled at the missing Spur for playing poor help defense.  (AP Photo / Tony Dejak)

And while James isn't blameless, I'm certainly not blaming him either.  Though he played poorly (4-16, 14 PTS, 7 REB, 4 AST, 6 TO), he still wasn't as bad as Hughes, Z or Damon Jones.  Has a 7'-4" guy ever played smaller than Ilgauskus?  I think the man actually shrinks when he touches the ball, like some short circuit of the space time continuum.  Hughes is hurt, so we'll cut him slack.

But Damon Jones has to take the cake.  What a scrub.  I couldn't believe the box score when I saw he played 12 minutes.  His statistical summary?  12 mins, 0.  Zero everything.  No points, no rebounds, no turnovers, no fouls, no technicals; I'm not sure he even touched the ball.  Why does he even play?  Why not play with Boobie some more?  If I had a Boobie I would certainly play with him more than 28 minutes a night.

Cavs fans will no doubt point to the nine point loss as a good sign given Lebron's performance.  But, uh, the Spurs really didn't play that well.  The defense was solid but the offense was rusty.  Ginobili was a train wreck for most of the night (though 16 PTS on 14 shots and 8 REB is quite respectable) and Finley missed every shot he took the last 47 minutes of the game.

LOUD NOISES.  (AP Photo / Tony Dejak)

Parker had 27 on 12-23 despite bricking 80% of his jumpers.  Duncan was Duncan, but you could tell he was holding back on the offensive end.  Trust me, this team has at least one more notch.

So Spurs fans, sit back and do your best to weather the inevitable bevy of "Lebron's going to make a statement in game 2" stories.  Fortunately you can come here for the truth:  the statement made Sunday will be that the outcome remains the same whether Lebron scores 16 or 60.

Twice as delightfully smarmy as this post.  (AP Photo / Eric Gay)

Re: What Are We Supposed to Be Witnessing Again?
Right on the money, sir!

Another coaching pet-peeve... Coach Brown benched LeBron with about a minute or so to go. Granted, they were down about 10, but why not still throw everything you've got out there, foul, stretch out the game, go for steals, see what happens? Lord knows none of us can ever forget what TMac did to us with about the same amount of time on the clock that one game, and LeBron and Boobie seemed to have just gotten into a mini-rhythm...

What I'm saying is, it's the freaking Finals! Why not play as hard as you can for the full 48 minutes? What are you saving it for? I remember Jerry Sloan had his guys ugly it up against us at the end of a game in that last series (it seems so long ago) and it ended up putting a tiny brief scare in our guys, but more importantly, it gave his guys a bit more confidence. Of course, we all know how that ended up for them down the line, but still... it's the Finals! Don't you guys want this? Don't you want to give it everything you've got?

I think they're just happy to be here.

Re: What Are We Supposed to Be Witnessing Again?
flickup17 makes a great point about mike brown quitting with a minute to go. i couldnt believe it either and thought about how utah finished as well.  the only other coach that i have seen throw in the towel in such circumstances in the past is......(gulp).......pop.

i'm not to wooried about boobie.  he had a fluky 3 and some garbage time points.  he did have one sweet driving lay-up...but thats not too much to worry about.

News flash to the media we did not play that well
Man I dunno about but the media really pissing me off with the exception of our local media and J.T. THe Brick(live from Hooters at riverwalk) everyone else whether tv or radio or paper all have their heads in the asses.

Lebron will play better next game and this n that n this n that. Excuses!

Was I the only noticed that the spurs were playing mediocre at best until 3rd when they stepped on their throat? ALso they made it close at the end cos by then the benches were clear the final score was a real justification of the difference between this posser East team n our Godly Western Champ team.

Like i said b4 say it again KOBE is the next AIr APparent not King James. U wanna know why? cos Kobe would of atleast played some fucking defense.

I know damn Well ass pissed off as we r u can bet ur ass KOBE is even more pissed.

Hey CLeveland if ur smart which u aren't cos just hiring or stealing away pieces of our puzzle to hope to win it all over there is not happeing but here some advice after u guys this thing cos u will no matter what Napolean Stern pulls, get on the phone and try to convince LAkers to trade u Kobe for Lebron.

Re: What Are We Supposed to Be Witnessing Again?
To be fair, has any coach-turned-announcer ever called out another coach's tactics? Ever? Maybe it's a courtesy thing. I thought JVG was very informative, pointing out all the holes in the Cavs' defence.

"But Damon Jones has to take the cake.  What a scrub.  I couldn't believe the box score when I saw he played 12 minutes."

?!?!?!
Dude, I JUST finished watching the repeat like five minutes ago (couldn't hang around to watch the live telecast earlier this morning), and I swear to god I didn't even notice Damon Jones was playing at all. Holy shit.

Re: What Are We Supposed to Be Witnessing Again?
Didn't catch the whole thing. I had to work. Damned suburban Illinois mouth-breathers. Anyway, my work-related bitching aside, I got home about 9 minutes into the 3rd quarter and spent the rest of the game giggling rather girlishly. In any case, the Facebook mouth-breathers are already proclaiming "a statement" in game 2, and I'm pretty sure the media is going to follow suit. God, it's going to be sweet when we shoot this hype in its crap-lousy face. Hideyori out.

Game 2
Yeah Mark Jackson is dreadful.... I don't even believe he knows what he is saying half of the time. Anyway, we played our "C-" game and still kicked their asses. Hopefully we take it up a notch so the nation can witness a Cavs ass-whoopin'.

and where are the dolls?!?!?!?
after watching a play-off chalk full of the semi-scantily-clad pussycat dolls commericals, i made sure to stick with every break last night.....but alas, there was no "right now"....WTF?

...and mark jackson even ruined the one good comment he almost made about tim's ballfake jumper from the foul line (the old guy at the YMCA bit). just kept blathering on about it. it would have been mildly funny if he just barked it out as a one-liner and let it go from there.
