The Spurs Owe Lebron James

Let us, for now, refrain from analysis and predictions.  Steer your mind clear of the match-ups and the coaching and GM relationships, and instead revel in the joy of what has been given to the Spurs and their fans:  something really worth winning.

That may came across as heresy to Spurs fans who've spent much energy fighting the "asterisk," but not all championships are created equal.  You cannot sincerely value the '99 and '03 titles equally without totally ignoring context.  '99 featured a strike-shortened season and beating the 8th seeded Knicks in the finals.  '03 featured the emphatic ending of the Lakers run (on their floor), a beatdown of in-state rivals Dallas and Duncan nearly posting a quadruple double in the deciding game of the finals against the upstart Nets, unequivocally proving the rightful man won the MVP.

Let's face it, another Finals triumph over the Pistons would have been sparsely viewed by general NBA fans and apathetically covered by the media.  How exactly would the writers have framed the contest?  A rematch of the '05 finals:  a rematch no one outside of Detroit and San Antonio wanted to see.  Hell, even I was at least partially dreading having to watch that series.

But thanks to Lebron (with a nod to the Pistons poor coaching, defense, effort, everything) the context for the finals has been changed.  We now have a series with multiple compelling storylines:

-Pop vs. (idiot-savant) protege.

-The overwhelming, lopsided public support for Lebron and the Cavs.  Seriously, what % of NBA fans will be rooting for the Spurs?  10% tops?  When's the last time an NBA finals has had that clear a public favorite?

-Lebron having to go through The Best Power Forward Ever for his first title, thus trumping Dwyane Wade.  Hell, even if Lebron loses this will go down as the series he "learned what it takes to be a champion."

-Dirty Bruce vs. The Air Apparent.  What would happen if Bruce was to crowd Lebron and turn his ankle?  What would the public outcry be like?  How  many death threats would he receive?  Stern would have to give Bowen a Secret Service escort, right?

-Varejao vs. Oberto.  Who flops more?

-Boobie.  Never underestimate the public allure of a man named Boobie.

-The Spurs teams defense vs. Lebron.  Does Pop double team him constantly?  Does anyone get a shot at him besides Bruce?

-Does Michael Finley, one of the most well-liked and respected guys in the league, finally get his ring?

-If the Spurs win with Duncan efficiently controlling both ends of the floor and earning his 4th finals MVP, does this do anything to shift public perception of the most accurate definition of the word "dominant?"  (This is an even more pertinent question in the context of Lebron's performance in game 5 of the ECF.)

The most important aspect of those storylines is the words that are conspicuously absent.  Phoenix Suns.  Robert Horry.  Amare Stoudemire.  Stu Jackson.  Suspensions.  Asterisk.

Lebron did something the Spurs couldn't.  He's rewritten the story.  He's both heightened and shifted the focus of these playoffs, and in doing so he's given the Spurs the chance to win something untainted.  And for that we should all be thankful.

Great post. Let's do this.

Re: The Spurs Owe Lebron James
I am glad that the game starts on Thursday, because I am flying out of Anchorage AK on Wednesday to see my favorite Bball team since the late 70's.  Me and my girl will be watching the Spurs go up 1-0 on the Cavs.  Should be a great series.

Re: The Spurs Owe Lebron James
this is a great post indeed.  to me, nothing was harder than the 05 finals win over detroit.  that pistons team died when ben wallace went to chicago. nothing was sweeter than the 03 run for sure. 99 was destined no matter who we would have played. it was SA's time. if sean elliot's heels didnt tell us that, then nothing did.

as an ohio resident (granted that i live in cincinnati - thats 4 hours away from cleveland), i know many people throughout the state that are cleveland fans.....as in browns and indians fans.  i got none - ZERO - contact out of any of them about the cavs until after game 5 of the ECF.  now they are all two feet into the cavs rolling bandwagon and feel it necessary to give me verbal warnings in the early morning hour while they are out getting loaded up at thier local tavern.....idiots all.

yes, it is true that the cavs beat the spurs twice in the regular season.  anyone want to bet that they wont beat the spurs twice in the next couple of weeks?

sure, its possible that lebron james could one man band this thing all the way to a title.  nearly everything is possible, but many fewer things are likely.

spurs in 5 - unless they have their game 1 layoff rust thing going.  in that case, spurs in 6....and if it does go that way, just remember that our commemorative shirts and hats will say nothing of suspensions, hip checks or whiny bitch teams that went down along the way.

Re: The Spurs Owe Lebron James
It's interesting that  Lebron is both David and Goliath in this series.

The Cavs presence does shift the storyline, but when they lose it will only create more hatred for the Spurs, which is regrettable, but at this point villainy is something we should get used to accepting.  I actually kind of enjoy it.  For a city typically known for a lost battle 170 years ago, its cool to now be associated with winning, even if it does piss people off.

Great post; "(idiot-savant) protege." Couldn't have put it better myself. Spurs in 6.

True Hoop led me here
Hey it is great to see a legit Spurs blog.  I definitely agree with the sentiment of this post, though people can call any one of the Spur's 3 titles tainted until they're silver and black in the face... I still say they're the real deal.

GO SPURS!

Re: The Spurs Owe Lebron James
No matter what, the Spurs come out of this series with more respect.

If we beat LeBron and he goes on to have a stellar, MJesque career, we'll always be the Old Guard - the ones who showed James what champion-level basketball really means. That will truly grant us 'dynasty status' - the Spurs Era will be official.

If we beat LeBron and he never makes it to this level again, we'll be the hero-breakers - the villains who crushed a rising young star. Sure we'll be bad guys ... but like the guy said, "we may not be a beloved organization, but we are a respected one."

And if we lose? Well, we won't, but in that case we'll hear a passing-the-torch story. Duncan will finally be recognized as the all-time great that he is. It's too bad the media didn't appreciate him before - but if it helps them spin the King James storyline, they'll finally give Timmy his due.

Re: The Spurs Owe Lebron James
I have one worry in these finals and it has little to do with the Cavs. Namely, that one wee Frenchman will decide that this is the stage for him to launch his next personal crusade, a Finals MVP. He's the only Spur that I have ever heard speak in terms of specific personal goals unrelated to team success. This venue gives him the pinnacle opportunity. Hope it doesn't come to pass ... but?

Re: The Spurs Owe Lebron James
I think Tony knows who his daddy is. If he decides to launch an MVP campaign at the expense of good, team-centric Spurs basketball, he's gonna get pine-splinters in his ass.

On the other hand, if he wants to raise his game all around ... if he wants to cruise through the Finals averaging eleven assists per game to go with 12-for-15 shooting and solid lock-down defense, he can have that MVP. Timmy won't mind a bit.

Re: The Spurs Owe Lebron James
No one will be the MVP except Duncan. Manu played better than Duncan in 05 and he didn't win then, so no way either Parker or Gino win it this year.

Re: The Spurs Owe Lebron James
Matthew,

Great point! Normally I wouldn't give half a peanutty shit how lazy sports commentators and occasional fans talk about the Spurs, but this definitely increases the respect our team will get when they win.

One other story line: individual vs. team. LeBron is amazing, but so is Timmy, and we have the best team in basketball. Hats off to the Cavs for getting this far (they wouldn't have in the West, of course) they'll probably only get better, and this series will probably feature some nailbiters, but Cleveland is still learning how to play like a team on offense -- this is a pretty tough stage to be on when you're still finding yourself.

Re: The Spurs Owe Lebron James
No matter what happens, the media will never give the Spurs, or Duncan for that matter, the kind of respect or appreciation that is due them because of the way they play - more emphasis on defense and efficiency rather than run-and-gun excitement. Its a sad fact for us Spurs fans, but as a true follower of the sport, I couldn't care less and I don't have to convince others how great Duncan and the Spurs really are. Albeit a few lucky shots from D.Fisher and D.Nowitzki, the Spurs would have had 5 rings by now en route to their 6th. Duncan will retire as the best PF ever after winning at least another title, after this year.

And no, Pops will not double-team Lebron James unless he starts posting up like MJ does.

I think that Bruce had best leave LeBron alone. I hope he plays him hard, I hope he plays him well and I hope he plays him clean.
I don't think David Stern is going to let Bruce Bowen mess with King James.
