Free Agents
What does everyone think of the free agents available? Any especially good fits for the Spurs? There are a number of free agents that I would like to see don the silver and black.
Obviously first on my list is Gerald Wallace, although he will not be nearly as effective for the Spurs as he was for the Bobcats... Still yet though, an excellent defender and total Spur quality.
Next on my list is a manchild who will forever be infamous in Motown. That's right... Darko! He is not yet even 21, and his potential is still there. Just think of what he could become after learning from the greatest pf of all time, and learning how to play bball the right way from Pop. If Pop doesn't pull a Beno on his ass (which unfortunately is a definite possibility) he should blossom.
I think Grant Hill could be our token "veteran seeking a championship" pickup. Then he and Timmy will finally get to play together, which of course was always meant to be. (Actually the real reason why Grant Hill has had so many injuries was because the basketball Gods were upset that Tim and Grant never got to play together. They were meant to play together since the dawn of time. However, it was not supposed to be in Orlando where Tim almost went... Grant was supposed to come to San Antonio, which he didn't because of his selfish desire to be everything Penny wasn't. Therefore Grant was punished.) When he comes to S.A. everything will be right in the world and Grant will never get another injury for the rest of his life.
There are a few others that intrigue me, and they include: Andres Nocioni (why not bring the whole Argentinian team), Jason Kapono (I thought I heard he could hit open threes? Maybe not...), and Jamaal Magloire (I actually don't want him. I'm not even sure why he is on this list.), and finally Chauncey Billups. We could bench him all year to pay him back for trying to steal (although unsuccessful) Horry's nickname.
In the words of Matthew Powell, "What say you Spurs Fans?"

Re: Free Agents
And seeing that Bruce, Finley and Barry are aging, why not bring nocioni to San Antonio? He has spur written all over his face. He defends, rebounds, scores (a lot better than bruce) and of course is argentinian, which is always a plus.
Re: Free Agents
Some interesting names:
PJ Brown - I dont want him, but we have flirted with him in the past. Doesn't make sense now though unless some other roster moves are made.
Luke Walton - I like his ability to handle and has all-around skills that might fit well as a back-up type, but there is definitely better out there.
Mo Williams - Seems like the dude lit us up every time he played us. Therefore, I am somewhat intrigued.
Quinton Ross - The Clips "defensive" guy. I would go for adding this defensive first guy as an athletic back-up and "future bruce" type if we could get him at the right price.
Morris Peterson - Great scorer that gets the team concept from his days at Michigan State. Probably out of Spurs price range though.
Just some random thoughts.
My $0.02
Wallace is going to cripple some other team very nicely this year - namely, a GM with a fantasy team. Wallace looked great in the fantasy stats this year, but that's largely because he plays for a glorified NBDL team. For him to land in San Antone would require us to shell out for a guy who's dumb as a rock and has no J. Not gonna happen. Wouldn't be prudent.
I'd love to see Darko as a Spur, personally. I think he's got a lot going for him. But we won't pay what he'd ask, so again, never gonna happen.
Hill would be a nice pick-up, especially on the cheap. Personally, I think he'd love to stand next to Timmy - he knows it's his best chance to look even remotely like what he was supposed to way back when. If he wants a ring, we've got a jersey for him.
Nocioni - I'd lurve this. Problem is, I can't imagine what would make the Bulls pull the trigger on any of the realistic deals. Scola would pretty much have to be part of the deal, and I don't see the gotta-win-before-Big-Ben's-knees-fail trading away an impact guy like Nocioni for somebody who probably wouldn't even play this year.
Kapono - Doesn't give me that Spur-a-licious feeling. Knocks down the jumper, yes. But strikes me as something of a cheesedick.
Magloire - It seems like every year, Magloire gets tossed around as 'a quality big man for some lucky team'. And then he's always mediocre wherever he ends up. Wouldn't be a bad pickup, and I'd probably play him in front of Elson, but I wouldn't pay as much as somebody else will.
Billups - I can't wait to see who's gonna rush to overpay for this guy...
PJ Brown - Hells no.
Luke Walton - Again, a cheesedick. But he'd be fantastic. But we can't get him. Oh well.
Mo Williams - Hmmmm. I have no opinion on this whatsoever.
Quinton Ross - If the numbers are right, why not? He's worth Ely's spot on the bench.
Mo Pete - I'd love this. Probably too rich for our blood, but worth a shot
About Nocioni
On the other hand, they could get a perfect fit for the 4 position in Scola, who will join the NBA probably this season. He is their missing piece.
For the Spurs, Nocioni would be a perfect replacement for Bowen, and he could even bring something different to the table because he is way more complete on the offensive side than Bruce.
Besides, when the Spurs decide to go with a small lineup, the team will have two "I dont care who you are, that rebound has my name written in it" argentinians in Manu and Nocioni.
Maybe we should get all the argentinian team, they are cheap and like to win.
Re: Very informed post
I tried to gauge interest with a trade for Duhon, http://www.poundingtherock.com/story/2007/6/19/205754/911, but didn't get the response I was looking for.
My plan A - sign & trade Noce + Duhon for Zack Randolph. Portland seems to think that they can get a lot more for Randolph, so this won't happen before the draft.
My plan B - trade Duhon or Noce for Scola. Like you said it is a perfect fit for both teams because it fills a need, and the talent level is pretty even.
A trade tha would involve Noce and Duhon for Scola would have to involve somebody else. What are your thoughts?
Re: Very informed post
Duhon would give us some youth and athleticism on the wing and Nocioni the hard nosed attitude on the blocks.
I like it. Let's suggest it.
