Melvin Ely Trade Analysis

(Thanks to PtR member spurfan81 for the heads up.)

The Charlotte Observer is reporting the Spurs and Bobcats are in the final stages of a trade.

Spurs receive:  Melvin Ely
Spurs give up:  Eric Williams, a 2009 second round draft pick and cash considerations

Let's first look at what the Spurs are "losing."

-Eric Williams:  A 34 year old expiring contract that fit very well into the Spurs theme of "Old and Slow."  Played about 5 meaningful minutes all year.

-2009 second round draft pick:  Well crap.  There's goes the chance to draft some 17 year old 6'-9" 175 pound Eastern European who averaged 3 and 2 in Herzegovenia's premier league.

-Cash considerations:  Williams' remaining salary is about $1.7 million.  Ely's is about $1.3 million.  So the Spurs probably through a couple hundred thousand at Charlotte.  Who cares?  It's not our money.

So who have we acquired?

Melvin Ely:  He turns 29 in May and is signed only through the end of this season.  He's listed as 6'-10" and 260 pounds and had his playing time cut significantly this year (to the point of requesting a trade).

The Spurs have had trouble rebounding of late and Pop has played the "soft" card.  Ely isn't much of a rebounder (and that's being kind), never reaching 10 REB/48 MIN.  (To give you an idea, Oberto, not exactly a demon on the glass, is at 12.5 REB/48 MIN this year.)  Is he "hard?"

Well, he has noticeable biceps and at least one tattoo; these are good signs.  And apparently he can play with his eyes closed, which may come in handy if nuclear war forces the Spurs to play in underground caves.

It's hard to have concrete feelings about a trade when all you give up is an expiring contract and a future 2nd round pick.  The Spurs biggest need is an athletic, defensive minded 2/3, but was there that type of player available?  Who knows?

Pop now has another body to throw out there when Fabri is getting pushed around and Elson is playing defense like he's a 4 year old lost at the playground.  And look at it this way, there's now one less guy standing between James White and an NBA court.

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
you seem a little too matter-of-fact about that nuclear war comment. do you know something we don't?

A Spur with cornrows and a headband? Is that allowed?

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
why not. It's not like I'd take him any less seriously.

Pop needs to go back to the buzz cut.

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
I think age has caught up with him and his hair is thinning.

I wish I could make a joke here about geriatrics, or wine, or something, but I have nothing...

About the trade:

We are giving up a guy who isn't going to do shit for a guy who potentially might do something. I like it.

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
Oh, I believe he's in a contract year so maybe he'll play hard for the stretch run?

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
Oh again, I read that Ely wants more playing time (who doesn't.)  Also, he could have turned down this trade (I read that on a spurs board.)  So, does this mean that Pop gave him some assurance that he would get decent playing time if he agreed to the trade?  I bring that up because some fans think he might be on the IR the whole time and this is just a move to get under the cap...

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
Well, he was basically getting NO playing time for Charlotte, and I'm sure Pop gave him the "you'll get a chance to prove yourself" speech.

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
Why dont we just use Butler? Is he THAT fat?

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
Yes, he is.

And even when he does get a chance, he looks like the laziest fatass in the history of basketball. Johnny Ludden froths at the mouth when he writes about him.

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
I'm reading that when Ely got good minutes with Charlotte last year he had good numbers, 13 and 8 if I remember.

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
Yeah, there's no downside here, unless it precludes other trades that could've happened with Eric Williams' contract, but it was a pretty small contract and likely wouldn't have gotten us anything too great on the wings. I like it, not least because it means Pop was lying when he said there wouldn't be any trades this year. (Thank God!) Maybe there are more to come... please...

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
I don't think we can call Pop a liar just yet.  He said no rotation guys would be traded so Williams doesn't count.  He's like the 12th man, maybe 13th if Bonner is healthy.

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
I just read a Ludden article that says that Beno probably wont be here long.

Also, Oberto hasn't played tonight. AT ALL. hmmm

Re: Melvin Ely Trade Analysis
I like OBerto, He tries while he is out there. I like the trade because like Matthew said one step closer to James White on the floor!

Pop has abused Beno too long for him to be an effective Spur. He must have chastised him for not memorizing a wine list.
