Re: Never Fear,
wow - glass half empty on that one...but most of it has merit.  how many did aldrige have on us opening night? too many. too many open/easy shots given up right now.

i thought the gay charge was a good call.  manu was moving, but he did beat gay to the spot. gay also initiated contact.  that one gets called a lot in the NBA...man, i just got 3 gays in there...oh, now 4.

there has been some good play in stretches for the first two games, and for the most part, it has been at the right times.

agreed that the rocket loss could be ugly. they are waiting to whip our ass. here's a preview: rockets get up double-digits in the 2nd: pop folds the tent in order to rest guys up for the miami game the next night; all marquee players sit the 4th and rockets cruise to a huge win.

Re: Never Fear, Sweet Powell,
I think we should all relax a little bit. First is was a back to back game and we won. Of course the defense sucks the season just started and the Spurs always start off slow. As long as Manu becomes superman down the stretch the Spurs should be fine!

Re: Never Fear, Sweet Powell, Stampler Will Make Y
I know you despise the Patriots, but I like them, and I think the Spurs could learn something from then. The whole spygate saga? What happened? The Patriots got so pissed that everyone started questioning them that they are destroying the opposition mercilessly. So, if the problem with the Spurs repeating is their intensity, why can't we use a reason like that to have a chip on our shoulder?I'm talking about all those idiots out there who say we got help from the refs and suspensions were unfair, and this and that. Why can't Pop give them a speech telling them that everyone think that our championship is tainted, and therefore they have to win it again, they have to shut all the doubter's mouth and cement their position as a dynasty, they have to prove, once and for all, that the Spurs are the best the NBA have. I know that would fire me up. But then again, the season is just starting, and they won all of their three games. So I won't start doubting them until they start losing big time. Anyway, that's just my two cents.

2nd game of the season
Damn, it's only game 2. This team has played shitty on back to backs the last 2 seasons, so I ain't trippin. I am really looking forward to that tilt with the Rockets to see where we stand.

Re: Never Fear, Sweet Powell,
Since the Spurs play 82 games per year it's hard to stay focused unlike football which they play once a week. Another thing the Patriots can learn from the Spurs. The Spurs are a classy organization and Pop never runs up the score  like those losers in Boston.

Dude, I'm supposed to be Mr. Negative.

I haven't seen enough of the Spurs to have an opinion on the entirety of your post.  You've probably jumped to conclusions a bit, which you freely admit when saying "Or screw it, maybe they'll rampage through the league at 66-16. What the hell do I know?"

It's hard writing about the same team 82 times a year.

Re: Never Fear, Sweet Powell, Stampler Will Make Y
It's even harder writing about them 110 or so times.  Plus they never do ANYTHING controversial like talking trash about their opponents or having their coach sexually harass one of their executives. I should appreciate Tony more. At least he keeps it lively, marrying a starlet and cutting an awful rap album.

Frankly, it's time for Manu to step up his game in this regard. He should dye his hair or start referring to himself in the third person or something. Maybe he can petition the NBA to change his uniform number to an exclamation point or conduct a press conference to announce that "Dan in Real Life" was lame and contrived. Frankly, he needs his own blog. Deep inside you know he's just as twisted as Agent Zero, if not more.

Re: Never Fear, Sweet Powell, Stampler Will Make Y
It's worth stating that even when I disagree with your analysis I still enjoy reading your writing.  I cannot say that about any other sportswriter.

And while we're here, let's talk about this:

I didn't read his formula, but I imagine that the priority to win any particular game goes something like

   1. Get the winner right
   2. Closest margin of victory
   3. Closest point total

My formula satisfies number 1.  However, I disagree that items 2 and 3 should be in any specific order, and the Sacramento game was a good example.

The final score was 96 - 80.  Here are some guesses:

Me:  106 - 90
You:  103 - 86
Chilai:  100 - 87
LatinD:  95 - 75
Krukow:  95 - 83

I nailed the margin, but was my guess really better than any of those other three?  Krukow was furthest off in terms of margin, but he only missed the total points by 4.  Here's what my formula came up with (the lower the number the better):

Me:  25.3
You:  13.3
Chilai:  18.9
LatinD:  11.8
Krukow:  7.2

I like the order those came out in and thus am happy with the formula so far.

I am also happy with how powell's formula came out.

Yes, but there was that one night several years ago involving Popovich, Sam Presti, a bottle of 1945 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, and the Coyote outfit.  My understanding is that Presti weaseled more than just a significantly accelerated career out of Coach Wino Von Zitface that night...

chaos... panic... pandemonium... my work here is done.
