Spurs 103, Cavaliers 117 - Jan 30, '16
For the second time this week, the Spurs got their butts handed to them on the road by a top tier opponent. Let's look at the numbers:
- 61% - Cleveland's 2 point FG%. It's hard to win when you give up so many good looks. Without the services of Tim Duncan, the Spurs really don't have a serviceable rim protector. Take a look at the Cavs FG% in the restricted area if you dare. (it's 71% )
- 53% - 60% eFG% - San Antonio actually scored efficiently enough from the field to win most games, but when you allow your opponent to go 60% eFG, that doesn't cut it.
- San Antonio wasted a great ballhandling effort, with just 6 turnovers in the whole game, after a wobbly start saw the Cavs score some easy transition buckets.
- LaMarcus Aldridge's phantom third foul really hurt the Spurs, taking away their most effective scorer for the remainder of the half and depriving them of their second best rim protector.
- Manu Ginobili had one of those nights where he looks like there's not much of anything left in the tank. Fortunately, the memory of his 20 point pasting of the Lakers last week is still fresh in my mind, so I'm not going to read too much into this one.
Must Reads
Boy oh boy have the Spurs felt Duncan's absence. He is pretty clearly the glue that holds San Antonio's historically great defense together, and without his calming influence, impeccable positioning and rim protection, the league's best defense has completely floundered in two of the past three games. Let's hope that knee calms down quickly, because I don't enjoy losing weeks (the first this season).
I know it's a tiny sample size and came against two of the three best teams in the league, but watching the Spurs struggle without Duncan makes me quite a bit more nervous to proclaim the Spurs title contenders should Duncan decide to hang it up at the end of this season. They'll have an enormous hole to fill whenever he does make that decision, and it will extend far deeper than Timmy's 8.9 points and 7.5 boards per game would suggest.
Hopefully we hear some good news on the Timmy front and can put this week behind us. There's a soft schedule next week with the Magic, Pelicans and Mavs, so the Spurs shouldn't be in too much trouble even if it's a longer timetable than we'd like.
