Kawhi Leonard has agreed to a max contract extension with the Spurs, reports Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. He will reportedly receive over $90 million over the course of his five-year contract.
Leonard was set to enter restricted free agency after the Spurs refused to offer a maximum extension last season but San Antonio was always expected to re-sign him. Instead of letting him hear other pitches, the Spurs moved fast and offered the contract Leonard was looking for in the early minutes of free agency.
Leonard won't be able to sign the papers until July 9 and will likely hold off on doing so until the Spurs figure out other free agency issues they are working on -- namely their pursuit of LaMarcus Aldridge -- to give the team more cap flexibility. The fact that a framework is in place, however, should help the team sell potential targets on their future in San Antonio now that the 2014 finals MVP is returning. In fact, Leonard will join Gregg Popovich and Tim Duncan in Los Angeles for their meeting with Aldridge.
Leonard averaged 16 points, seven rebounds and two steal per game last season.
