FEARLESS FORECAST 2: SPURS VS. MAVERICKS

This will be the breakout game for our Spurs. They have been sputtering after getting leads early, but they should hold on to a big lead today.

Dallas has to rely heavily on the scoring of Nowitzki and Matthews. Parsons is not yet 100%. Barrea would be overmatched for either Parker or Mills. D. Will is not the same D. Will in Utah years back. Good for maybe 10 points but not for much more. The main challenge then for San Antonio would be how to contain Nowitzki and Matthews who have been hitting their shots as of late. Duncan or Splitter used to guard Nowitzki to take away the mid range post up, but he does not have the strength to post up anymore. Duncan , on the other hand, may not be able to keep up with him from the outside. Look for West to take the German power forward, or Aldridge if he plays. Kawhi would likely take Matthews and Green on Parsons. Dallas traditionally had problems with the penetration of Parker , and it should be no different today what with Parker’s stellar plays in the past few games. There is no guard on the Dallas lineup who could defensively put up against Parker.

Dallas has a short frontline and would be hardpressed against West or Aldridge, and Pachulia may not be able to keep up with Duncan’s cuts down low. The latter could even post up some for this game. Kawhi will dominate Parsons or Matthews. Dallas tries on defense but it will not be enough against the ball movement of the Spurs. Fastbreak points off turnovers would be the theme of the game, with the Spurs’ defense running havoc on the offensive patterns of Ric Carlisle. With a very shallow bench this year, Dallas would not have the manpower to run with the Spurs .

Green and Mills will continue their good sniping from the 3. Boban should find extended minutes around the 3rd quarter. If our Spurs get a sizeable lead in the 2nd quarter, Parker and Ginobli would be rested. Simmons and Anderson should get the opportunity to play together. Look for McCallum to score today.

Dallas would also be laboring with heavy legs after playing on the road behind Memphis yesterday. The late plane ride to San Antonio will not help.

Spurs by 20 or more. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
